We visited the Marriott Courtyard the week before Christmas for a 3-night visit. It was one of the mid-price hotels that was available, and overall, we were pleased.
Hotel itself
Parking
The hotel does not have an affiliated self-parking option, and they recommend using the valet at the front, and it is $65 a day. Be prepared.
Lobby
The lobby is beautiful, the ceiling has hand-painted tiles, and you feel like you are in an upscale place. If there are no meetings or events, sneak to the safety deposit floor and check out the vault. Also, if you go to the mezzanine level, there is a window that will open to the lobby, and you can get some great photos of the lobby.
Staff
Everyone we talked to and visited was courteous and professional. They had a good knowledge of the facility and the area.
Room
This was somewhat negative for me. It was decent in size, ours had one queen bed, a couch, and a table, but the mattress was extremely firm, almost like concrete, and not to my taste. Like many other older hotels, the water pressure was a little low. There were a few nitpicky things that were not great either, like one trash can in the room, a small one in the bathroom. We typically like to bring food back to the room, and it was a little bit of a pain to get rid of a pizza box. In additional and a smaller sink vanity that was limited in countertop space.
Area
It is not “In” the Gaslamp area, where many of the restaurants and bars are; it is about a 10–15-minute walk to anywhere you want to be. If you have a car, the zoo is about a 15-minute drive. We did not utilize public transportation during our visit.
There can be a lot of Homeless people loitering in the area; if you are sensitive to that, it may bug you. For the most part, if you do not engage with them, they will not talk to you. I had one issue when I went to the 7-11 on the backside of the hotel at about 4 pm, and a gentleman was performing an act on himself in the doorway.
Overall, if we visited again, I would like to stay in a different area like the harbor side area or the Gas Lamp area, but if you are a 1st time visit and want a nice hotel for a good price with character, this would be a good option.
