From Petrified Waterfalls to Living Traditions — An Unforgettable Day!
When I started planning my trip to Oaxaca, I knew I had to find a way to see El Hierve el Agua — it’s such a one-of-a-kind place, it was right at the top of my list. I wasn't sure how best to visit, but I’m so glad I chose Coyote Aventuras. Honestly, I can't imagine a better, more meaningful way to experience its majesty.
The day began with breakfast in a tiny village hamlet — cozy, authentic, and absolutely delicious. It was hands down one of the tastiest meals we had during our entire trip. Sharing a homemade meal in such a warm, welcoming setting made the experience even richer.
Then came the early morning hike to Hierve el Agua itself. Because of our timing, we had the site almost to ourselves and were able to catch the most incredible photos from every angle of the unique petrified waterfalls. After a refreshing dip in the pools at the top, we set off on the main hike: a tougher, but deeply rewarding trek across the valley. The landscape was stunning in every direction, and we got to see Oaxaca’s unique flora and fauna up close — a real highlight thanks to our amazing guide.
Honestly, my main motivation for booking this tour was El Hierve el Agua. The second part — visiting Teotitlán del Valle — felt like a nice bonus, but not something I was overly focused on. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The visit to Teotitlán del Valle turned out to be just as unforgettable as Hierve itself. Josephina and her daughters welcomed us with open arms, serving another gorgeous, homemade meal — truly among the best food we had in Oaxaca. Afterward, Josephina demonstrated the traditional art of natural dyeing. Watching her create an entire kaleidoscope of colors using only local plants, insects, and minerals was mesmerizing — pure "Zapotec science" in action. I never would have guessed how they conjured vibrant turquoises, pinks, and so many more shades.
There was absolutely zero pressure to buy anything, but seeing the love, skill, and heritage woven into every piece, it was impossible to resist. We took home a beautiful memento that we’ll treasure forever.
A huge part of what made this day so special was our guide, Marlene. She was everything you could hope for and more — friendly, warm, deeply knowledgeable about Mexican culture, history, customs, flora, and fauna. Her quick hands even caught a cicada for us to admire up close! It seemed like there wasn’t a plant or bird she didn’t recognize. Marlene’s authenticity and her genuine relationships with every local we met made the experience feel deeply personal and connected.
We also felt lucky to see Jorge behind the wheel again — this was our second trip with Coyote Aventuras! In his expert care, we were able to relax completely (and even sneak in a quick nap during the early morning drive).
Booking with Coyote Aventuras was incredibly easy — clear, professional, and smooth from start to finish. Beyond just logistics, you can feel how much love, respect, and care they have for the nature and people of Oaxaca. It permeates every part of the experience and made the whole day that much more meaningful.
I will absolutely be going on another adventure with Coyote Aventuras the next time I'm lucky enough to return to Oaxaca.
If you’re considering this tour: do it. You won’t just see Oaxaca’s beauty — you’ll connect with its heart.
