Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park

Cradle Mountain is undeniably beautiful. The alpine landscape, Dove Lake at sunset, and the dramatic peaks are every bit as spectacular as the photos suggest. We queued at the boom gate before 6pm one evening to secure one of the ten parking spots at Dove Lake — and the sunset absolutely delivered. Magic. But logistically, this was the most frustrating park of our Tasmania trip. There are no toilets at the start of the iconic Overland Track (Ronny Creek), and none along much of the trail system, which unfortunately results in toilet paper scattered in places, which was disappointing to see in such a premier national park. The signage was also inconsistent. At the visitor centre we were told they “measure by time, not distance,” yet the time estimates were unreliable. One section marked 45 minutes took us an hour; another signed as 2–3 hours took 90 minutes. Other parks like Freycinet and Tasman list both distance (km) and time, which makes planning far easier. Parking is extremely limited: roughly 10 spaces at Dove Lake and around 20 at Ronny Creek. With the road closed for construction during our visit (in February, peak season), access was restricted and the shuttle bus - an additional $15 per person for 7km - only ran between 8am and 2:30pm. After already paying $90 for a parks pass, this felt excessive and really limited hiking flexibility. There are also no campground facilities within the main Cradle precinct like you find at Freycinet or Tasman, which adds to the logistical challenge. The scenery is world-class, no question, even if it was cloudy on our second day. But for such an iconic destination, the infrastructure and visitor management felt strained and frustrating compared to other Tasmanian national parks. Beautiful, yes. Seamless, no.

I loved being in this place. It is a mountain with a beautiful lake that brings peace and tranquility. The atmosphere is calm, the air is pure, and it allows you to deeply connect with nature, filling your heart with love and serenity.

Absolutely stunning! The views are dramatic and peaceful at the same time. Perfect for hiking, fresh air, and reconnecting with nature. I spotted wallabies and wombats along the way (they’re so cute!). Perfect mix of wild nature, peace, and adventure.

Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is a breathtaking destination offering diverse hiking trails, stunning alpine scenery, and abundant wildlife. The Dove Lake Circuit provides iconic views, while the Overland Track offers a challenging adventure. A must-visit for nature enthusiasts exploring Tasmania

Stunning scenery. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t being friendly to see Cradle Mountain but the surrounding area is beautiful. You can either drive in early but cannot leave in your own vehicle until late afternoon. We caught the bus from the visitor centre and disembarked at Ronnys Creek. The walk up to the historic Waldheim Chalet took about 40 mins return. The best spot to see wombats in the wild during daylight.

Majestic :D unique landscape and absolutely a must see landscape in Australia! I wish I could spend more time over there :)

The drive up the mountain was fantastic but we couldn’t go any further than the Visitor Centre as we had dogs. The views are to die for. Lucky people who live near by to have this view everyday.

Cradle Mountain National Park is a gorgeous place to visit. Once you exit pass the visitor centre you can take a bus into the National Park. I like getting off at Ronny Creek and walking from there - eventually ending up at the Dove Lake car park. If you are doing Marion’s Lookout or Kitchen hut I recommend going from Ronny. Not only are there less people but the climbs are not as steep and the landscape is so diverse. One of my favourite places in the world!
