Craig Hospital

The family housing apartment I stayed in was very nice, full kitchen, queen size bed and a full size hide-a-bed, has a large refrigerator, dishwasher, 4 piece dish set, microwave, stove top, some pots and pans, toaster, and a little Keurig style coffee maker that uses the pods, has a small bottle of dish soap, the hospital has pretty good food and a lot to choose from on their menu, their cafeteria is not open all day, only open for a couple hours at a time for breakfast lunch and dinner, prayers for all the families that stay here.

I'm writing this review on behalf of my good friend Sue P.B. (Who is still at Craig Hospital). Me and another friend were just there visting Sue last Wed. - Friday). EVERYONE we met who were Sue's caregivers were absolutley wonderful. One of the first people we met from 3West from Sue's care team was Sally. Sally works with Dr. Schraa and they were both so caring and compassionate when they talked about our friend Sue. Over the three days we were visiting, we primarily dealt with Sally and she truly was a miracle worker with a heart filled of so much love and grace for our dear friend Sue. Other care team members that I remember included Joanna, Kate, Beth, Rae, Ashlee, Ruth, Steel, Celeste (Manual Therapy), Josie (SLP), and Kelly and Brian at the front desk. Because we met so many people over the course of our three day visit with Sue, I know there are a few names of care members that I just can't recall. But, none the less, EVERYONE was wonderful and made a lasting impact! We left there on the 4th of July in the evening after playing Bingo, enjoying a delicious BBQ lunch outside and listening to music in the sunshine with our dear friend. Sue kept saying I know I'm in the best place for recovery and she felt so blessed. We reasurred Sue that yes, she's in the best hospital for her recovery. The incredible care team for our friend Sue on 3West, literally proved this statement to be true the entire time we were there. Thank you Craig Hospital (and especially the care team on 3West for all you do each and every day, not just for loving and caring so much about our beloved friend Sue, but for all the people who come through your doors. Literally one of the greatest places on earth. Please disregard the poor reviews. Everyone has bad experiences or bad days. Craig has a legal and moral obligation to pick and choose who they allow. They cannot be all things to all people. Private bathrooms are not a universal right. What is a universal right is for a private business to control who does and does not enter and use their facility. They also are not the insurance company - because you get a bill from insurance has nothing to do with the facility. That is on the third party - not the hospital. Call your insurance company before railing on the institution that had nothing to do with it. And finally, if you are judging an entire hospital experience on the person working the front desk in the middle of the night…. I could not recommend a facility more. They have utterly and completely changed my life for the better. I was a patient at the same time as my first cousin in 2006. There are few places on the planet that hold a more special place in my heart. If you are looking for an SCI facility - this is the best in the world. Could not more highly recommend. My brother came to Craig after a TBI from a motorcycle accident. We heard "how wonderful Craig is" and "this is where miracles happen". Our experience was far from all the hype. I won't name any names at the risk of retaliation or my review being removed but I wanted to share our story. Once at Craig we were told we have our "initial " meeting where we will talk about the plan, and should have a "middle" and final meeting ... That was not the case, from our initial meeting the DR, had a discharge date already on the books. During the "initial" meeting the Dr said " he will need your care for the rest of his life", saying this is as good as it gets and get used to it. Not so much the miracle facility you keep hearing about. Outside of the DR we also had a poor experience with the CM, it became obvious from day 1 that they would be of little help as we learned to navigate insurance and care plans. We had to learn from another family at Craig that there were "meal cards" or even " music therapy " and had to ask instead of being offered. From there on our any questions i had for CM seemed like I had to do all the work to get the answers. Early on we stopped asking CM for help unless absolutely necessary as we found other avenues to get our questions answered with less homework for us to do ourselves. I even at one point had to ask" who is our patient Advocate", just to learn the CM was that person but we didn’t who to reach out to. Long story short we were set to discharge from craig early 2025 and a complication sent us back to ER then we had to hold at another rehab center for several weeks before exciting news, we are going back to craig. We had a glimmer of hope this this time maybe we would have a different DR... unfortunately, we were disappointed to find out we have the exact same DR. Day 1 on our return to craig, my brother is still in his bed, we don't have a wheel chair yet, haven't seen PT OT. The DR walks in and tells us welcome back and gives us our new discharge date... and it would only be a short 4 week stay this time around. My brother faced complications throughout his first visit at craig and wasn't given a fair amount of time to recover from the complications to even give a proper evaluation of possible future recovery. As we scramble to take in as much information as we can about caring for my brother in a short period of time we also hear from CM 2 weeks into our 4 week stay that they then started reaching out to staffing agencies to get nursing care at home... they knew from day 1 we are leaving on a specific date but UNNECESSARILY delayed to the point where the staffing agency said they cannot find home RN on short notice, furthermore the staffing company suggested that this discharge seemed rushed and recommended we " ask for appeal" on the discharge date. We asked for appeal at our " induction/middle and end " combined rush meeting, just to be told once again that we need to learn to take care of him ourselves. Fast forward we have discharged home; we still don't have the nurse care lined up. We are having a crash course in taking care of full grown adult who cannot take care of themselves and pray we don't make any mistakes. My brother's accident has been the MOST difficult event in our families lives and being PUSHED out of Craig prematurely only made an already difficult situation all the scarier. I do want to give a shout out to the amazing RN team, PT, OT, they have all done their best and tried to be our patient advocates when the DR and CM were not on our side from day 1. I hope that writing this review educates some families on our disappointing experience at Craig, any upper management that reads this review please know I have already addressed this with someone in upper management at Craig prior to our departure. Only thing that can help remedy this situation from a management standpoint is to terminate this doctor and CM as neither of them are fit to take care of patients and have some of the worst bedside manners I've ever seen, this coming from a family of DRs, RNs, NPs.

I assist a client who attends here many times a week. I’ve had mixed help by the HR department to get permission to pump because I had a baby. To the staff who’ve given me a hard time, including today. I’m sorry it’s an inconvenience to look up the schedule and leave your chair for a minute but this facility could be a little kinder. I’ve never had a hospital be so rude and unwelcoming. Also, any other facility has more than one pumping room and sinks. Just for your information. I hope this facility learns to take a different and more professional approach in the future. Also, more understanding to working moms.

Craig Hospital took my kid in. They promised low or very low hospital re-entry. 5 years later, there has been zero re-hospitalization. No pressure sores, very careful about promises. I hope you are underwhelmed by this review. You will be overwhelmed by the progress and life you will receive if you are lucky enough to be accepted here.

Craig Hospital has been nothing short of amazing. After a catastrophic motorcycle accident in July 2021 my husband was transferred to Craig Hospital. The Doctors, the team of PT/OT/Speech/mental Health and all nursing/tech teams were so far past wonderful, I don’t have a word for it. From the amazing technology in the gym to the entire teams personal investments with our family. These people cared, like on a real life, deep in the thick of it kind of cared about not only my husband but our whole family. My kids and I watched them transform my husband to become independent and strong in his chair transfers and all daily tasks that he will need outside of Craig. Craig took a very hard situation and used all positive reinforcements to teach our family to live happily and confidently in our new normal. Every staff member made it happen. The support staff was just as amazing and are still helping us with our transition to outpatient. I can not give this Hospital enough stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We felt so fortunate that my son was able to rehabilitate from his motorcycle accident at Craig. I can’t imagine having a better experience anywhere else. My son arrived at Craig just over a month from his accident date. He had a serious TBI with very limited mobility on his left side. The staff was attentive, friendly and very professional. We worked with a great team of therapists who coordinated together for his recovery. He was walking and talking in no time! Their program is structured such so the patient improves daily. The rooms are comfortable (except for the recliners. They are the most uncomfortable chairs ever.) and roomy. The food is probably better than average hospital food. The equipment is state of the art and he loved the warm therapy pools. We loved all our nurses and techs. It was almost (almost!) sad to leave. It would be hard pressed to find any place better to recover from a TBI or spinal injury.

Craig Hospital was great when I went in 1997. as the years went by its felt like they are more about research. my complaint is that when I had to have spinal surgeries after that, they wouldn't take you. You have to use Swedish Medical Center and it felt like they weren't as on top of things. The older you get it's harder and you don't feel as important or as need of care. I get survey's and complain but there's no follow up. They have a Facebook and advertisement on TV and make it look like most people get cured which isn't true. You get the idea that the people who try hard enough that they walk again by the comments people say such things. Craig needs to focus on patients who age and on pain issues badly. I've heard this from others I know. it's very hard to get back for in patient care after you're released initially if you need care. I got much out of it initially. I hate having to say these things but maybe this will make them make changes. Thank you!

Amazing hospital and staff. They truly care. I was in a motorcycle accident and they saved me. I am walking again and getting back to the active life I love. Thank you Craig!

I've reviewed Craig, here, before (5 stars), but since I am 11 years out from my stroke,followed by a year at Craig, I wanted to revisit it and add some comments about the lasting, life-changing lessons I learned there. I now have an indomitable spirit thanks to Craig! They taught me how to use all I've got (left) and whatever's around to overcome the obstacle before me, right now, and push forward, and to never, ever stop trying! There aren't enough words to describe the reverence I've developed for Craig.

This rehabilitation at Craig Hospital is great for some and terrible for others depends on your team and money it's unfair I was treated so poorly because I was given the WORST doctor dr Mayers he was not even present for the first month and a half I was there then appon his return he was insistent I had carpal tunnel and not two new titanium clavicles in my left shoulder blade I an broken up so badly and need many more surgerys to survive I was denied proper care as well as discharged with out a care team or the right medical equipment essential for my survival I'm dieing now at home with out the ability to even dress myself or shower they use the insurance companies all up and get millions in donations as if they were a non profit company it's the absolute despicable blood sucking vampireistic scam using the tragedy of people to profit to the max and leave the people in need out to die .their is so much more to my story I'm just extremely un well and don't have the energy to continue writing this.

Fuck Craig. No stars. I have POTS and they denied me a salt shaker and forced me to stand for a prolonged period of time. Absolutely outrageous. I HAVE POTS!!!!!!!

This organization refuses to treat patients based on their high profit margin. Instead of accepting our son and his covered insurance benefits, they insist on us coming up with an additional $150,000 to cover an extended stay that THEY recommend. Insurance covers 30 days of treatment for our son's TBI, however, Craig refuses to treat him for the allowed amount of time because they want a full 45-60 days of treatment paid for. 30 days of treatment promises a life change recovery for our son, but because we are not rich, he will get no treatment at all and will be released from the hospital for us to try to rehabilitate him at home. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! This is a commonplace happenstance with this organization. Their profit margin, and demand for an additional $100-150,000 means that any insured, but not rich, patient will be denied services. THIS FACILITY IS ONLY FOR THE ELITE CLASS. Unfortunately, it is the ONLY facility in the Western US that treats TBI this specifically. So, our 28 yr old son is refused ANY service, even though he has insurance that covers 30 days of treatment because they insist on receiving 45-60 days of treatment payment before even accepting him. Why won't they simply take him and treat him for what the insurance allows? Because it doesn't make them enough MONEY. Good on you, if you happen to be rich and injured with a TBI. For the rest of us, normal folks, TOO BAD.

My son was admitted to Craig for a serious TBI due to a motorcycle accident. He was 33 days post accident when he was admitted and he couldn't walk or really talk. He was just coming out of sedation caused by the meds he was receiving at the LTAC facility before coming to Craig. He had no memory of anything or why he was there. Within 2 weeks he was using his legs, eating, and talking in fully formed sentences! He made huge improvements daily. The staff at Craig is top-notch. There wasn't one person there we didn't like. He was matched up with the perfect therapy team too. My son far exceeded all expectations and was released a little less than 2 months there. We are currently doing outpatient therapies through Craig even though it's a long drive each way. We are so thankful Colorado is home to Craig as I can't imagine what he would be like with a lesser hospital.

I am once again reminded of how idiotic humans can be when we are feeling ill. I was inpatient with Craig Hospital for 7 weeks and benefited during that time. However, as an outpatient the service wasn't the same. I decided to follow up with Craig for the recommended comprehensive week long assessment. This was to include a MRI since something was making me weaker. No MRI was even scheduled until the very last minute which shouldn't have been the case. I took a week off of work, was apart from my family and spent money on as assessment at a hospital that I believed could help me. This was the furthest from the truth. I became more disillusioned and actually felt I just threw my time and money away. I am currently in the hospital getting surgery that should have been caught 2 years earlier by the supposedly best hospital for brain and spinal injury cases. It is unfortunate, in my opinion, the hospital with a phenomenal reputation is not truly serving the community to which they are supposedly committed. I see a lot of red tape, plus ongoing request for fundraising assistance with no true empathy or grace for majority of individuals suffering and coping with this injury everyday. When will this hospital finally realize they will have to go back to the basics and look at the main reason Craig Hospital is began.

While my wife was in acute care at Spaulding in Charlestown Mass. We researched where to do outpatient physical rehab. Craig is in the top 10 on all the lists and met some personal preferences (not too hot, interesting location, easy flights (you'll return for periodic evals the rest of your life), etc), so we chose it. Coming to the end of a 10 week out patient stay, and we couldn't be happier. The atmosphere is like silicone valley (relaxed but very effective), the apartment was affordable and friendly (we have met inspiring individuals here), the staff are top notch (they once went 17 years without losing a nurse). The food is good. Their 'Peak Center' allows you to buy important extra therapy for only $80 an hour, and it has all kinds of high tech machines to make a body better. On reviewing potentials, we undervalued Recreation Therapy. This Hospital's RT department has blown us out of the water. The things she has gotten to do have not only restored her outlook, it's kept her so busy it has allowed no time for moping. She, at little to no cost to us, has gone gliding, kayaking, scuba diving (intro only), wheelchair hiking, and on Friday she goes sailing. Of course she has had a ton of both physical therapy, and occupational therapy, and they teach how to drive with hand controls too. Two days ago they taught her how to go down stairs backwards in her chair (in a fire the elevators shut off). If I had to whine about anything I'd probably choose schedule creation and dissemination. It's a black box that spits out a PDF of her schedule every Thursday. It's clunky and does not easily allow our input (but we can input, and change it). Parking is easy and coffee is free. What more could you ask for?

I am surprised there aren't more reviews on Craig Hospital. This is a world class facility. If you know of someone who has recently acquired a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, look no further than Craig Hospital. Their team of doctors, therapists, nurses, etc. are the best in their field. As one of the top 10 hospitals in the nation for TBI and SCI, I have found both inpatient and outpatient programs to be the most comprehensive and well organized. I highly recommend Craig Hospital!

My mom was unable to go to CRAIG and ended up going to a competitor that offered much less value and less therapy for her brain injury. As a result, CRAIG stepped in and helped guide them and us as a family regarding the process. They treated her like she was their patient, reviewed her medical files assigned a CCM to work with her case, it was just outstanding. I can't say enough amazing things about this hospital, the service they provide and the attention to detail. Grateful they are here for folks.

This is revision of my previous review. Have been to Craig twice for week long outpatient evaluations. Yes, the staff are warm and cordial and the facilities are comfortable and patient friendly. That said, the actual help and assistance have been sorely lacking and at times dishonest. Per my first visit, none of the advice directives helped for my bodily function deficits. I wasted tens of thousands of dollars on overpriced gadgets per Craig's directives, with no follow up or seeming concern over the increased burdens placed upon me, or the massive problems encountered from what turned out to be terrible advice A year ago I returned and was adamant in lengthy conversations with intake staff that my sole purpose was to identify best relief option for my primary issue. When I arrived, none of what I asked for was addressed and none of failed treatment experiences were communicated to the nursing staff. I spent a ton of money for essentially nothing and never had the feeling there was knowledge or concern about my particular circumstances. In my multiple efforts to communicate dissatisfaction, and more importantly make progress on what have been six years of absolute hell, Craig's staff was lightning quick in it's retreat into bureaucracy mode. On multiple occasions, I was promised communications and assistance that never happened. I was never disrespectful or abusive toward Craig staff, but was profoundly disappointed over incurring unnecessary expense, wasted time, feeling intentionally misled, and worst of all being trapped without much of a life and medical hope for change unresponsive. Personally, I believe the Craig facility is largely reputation over actual substance. Patients are supposed to go through their one week dog and pony show, tell them how great they are, and then sure to disappear. It doesn't work very well if there is no actual progress accomplished and no means for substantive follow up. I write this review as someone who attached a lot of hope to Craig's reputed expertise, but my experience has been nothing but profoundly frustrating.

honesty compels me to update my earlier review, as it turns out I never regained my mobility. That's okay, though. I am a lawyer and I'll simply practice from a wheelchair. The point is: I've been to Craig,and I can overcome any obstacle now. Craig is the most relentlessly positive place on earth! Everyone there is about "you can do this." When I left, I told my occupational therapist: "it was worth the stroke to have met you!" And I feel the same about Craig as a whole: my stroke devastated my world, but Craig taught me that I can deal with (and overcome) anything. I wouldn't trade my Craig experience for the world. Pity that yelp ratings top out at 5 stars. It's a 10 star facility,and richly deserves its stellar world-wide reputation for excellence. This place is as good as it gets. kudos to Craig and a heartfelt "thank you" to Casey (the world's greatest OT)

My brother was in a very serious accident and it's a miracle he's alive. His inpatient treatment was amazing the staff was amazingly friendly and they took mostly good care of him except the few negligent ones (one leaving him to lay in his own crap almost all night cause he couldn't get up to go to the bathroom on his own at the time). But once we got into outpatient it felt like all they wanted to do was get rid of us. They didn't really show much care for him after he was put in outpatient and they did a terrible job with him. It's amazing that he's able to walk right now with how little the outpatient doctors cared. This place will care for you greatly when you are inpatient but if you become outpatient and aren't a celebrity or have money they don't give two shits about you. Especially when you stay in the family housing. Our neighbor got kicked out two weeks before their free month was up because some of the cleaning ladies told the main lady that she'd yelled at them and refused to let them clean which wasn't true. They were trying to care for their son who was paralyzed from the chest down when they knocked at 9 in the morning and they asked them to come back later on. Not happy with the outpatient treatment at all. Inpatient was more good then bad though so I'm very happy with that part of my brothers treatment.

This facility has the best staff around. My cousin stayed at Craig for 3 months and felt very comfortable with all staff members from doctors to nurses to techs. The best place anyone could hope to go for severe spinal cord injury. Family can stay on the premises in family housing which makes it convenient to visit. Rooms for patients wonderful. Staff is friendly and incredibly dedicated

Craig Hospital is an incredible, world class facility. We are so fortunate to have such a place right in Denver. The staff is caring and the building just keeps getting even better. Once a part of the Craig Family it will always hold a special place in your heart. The main thing to me is that every person you need to fully recover is here in one location from the doctors who come in, to the caring nursing staff and the amazing therapists, psychologists, etc. Welcome to the family.

My dad was in here for several months due to a fall at work and this place is full of amazing people! Not only did they help him get back on his feet but they treated him with the dignity and respect that he deserved. By the time he "graduated" he had made dozens of friends which include the staff. He has been home for 3 months and still talks about how kind and funny they were. Thanks Craig!
