On the Grid : Crane Arts

"One of the first big arts centers in the neighborhood, Crane Arts is still running strong. The building houses galleries, art studios, and two curated spaces——the Grey Room and the mammoth Icebox. Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, one of the building’s mainstays, offers photography classes, exhibitions, and services like printing and scanning." - Melissa McFeeters

I visited an ending reception art exhibition recently. I was amazed at all the mixed media artwork that I viewed.

We went to see the Philly Photo Day exhibition. It was ok. I thought there would be more photos. Also, I think there should have been a better understanding of how to title your work since no actual titles were displayed. Other than that, the actual space is quite nice and we did see another unrelated exhibit that was gr was great

Such a cool building! Amazing history of being a meatpacking facility back in the day, along with an enormous ice box- which is now a gallery.

Yelp
The Crane is a HUGE artists space in Northern Liberties that supports art of every kind. Inside you won't just see art exhibits - you'll find music, theater performance, incredible benefit events, and some great sales with all kind of vendors. On this month alone the crane will have a gallery exhibit that features Multimedia sculptures, A show by the Pig Iron Theater Company as part of the Fringe Fest, and a huge InLiquid benefit that will have 200 artworks on display. Every Winter and Summer the Crane has a huge event called Art For The Cash Poor. 100's of vendors sale their art and nothing on sale goes for over $100. so you can get all kinds of affordable art. Not only that but they also put on a huge concert (outdoor during summer) that has featured the likes of Bunnydrums, Northern Liberties, and Kings Of Siam in the past.

Yelp
This is a very nice space for artist of all skills and talents. You will find work from various artist especially locally. I visited during a reception where I flowed from room to room to find art expressed in so many ways. The build was once a large warehouse that has been broken down to several rooms and businesses. You can move throughout the space with ease as it has a large middle hall branching out to several rooms, some more intimate than others. There is also a shop where you can find cultural and artistic goods. I don't know if they rent the space for special events but I can see a party or wedding reception here.

Yelp
This is a fantastic space for art shows. The space is HUGE, staff is friendly. The location is rather accessible by bus. There is also very good parking for anything on two-wheels. I attended a show there and part of it entailed a massive Viking "ship" that was actually and people-powered float and it traveled to The Piazza. The "ship" was chock full of people dressing in Viking gear. It was fantastic!

Yelp
I came here for 2007's Art for the Cash Poor, and the Crane Arts Building is wonderful for hosting such an eclectic show. They have food, music, and a tremendous variety of artists. Last year's after party entertainment was a variety/burlesque show that was wholly (but not wholesomely) entertaining. If you're in Philadelphia Friday, June 13, 2008, definitely stop by, pay the small entry fee and support these amazing artists!

Yelp
Just a hop skip and jump across from NoLibs rests one of the newest-best generators of modern thought in Philadelphia: the Crane Arts Building. Never heard of it? Oh but you soon will...

Yelp
great space! went to a craft show today, specifically to see Michelle Judge, but the entire fair was amazing! I ended up purchasing gifts from many different vendors!! Really happy I came, super spacious, stroller friendly. It was EXTREMELY HOT and over all good experience but they should opened the huge back doors to get a breeze throw the space!
