Crankhouse is worth a visit to Exeter. Every visit I've made, I've been increasingly impressed by the range of coffees, cakes and savoury treats. The filter coffee is strong and showcases the bean well from previous experience. Today we tried the drip coffee which had pink lemonade notes, sweet and mild - perfect balance. The flat white was the nicest coffee I've had in a long time. The in-house roastery is always a treat, but what stole the show today was the cakes and savoury snacks on offer. Many places in Exeter offer cakes, many of those places use a supplier. Everything at crankhouse was fresh and homemade and it stands out. The ricotta and sun-dried tomato bun was spectacular, the banana bread hit the spot a treat and the lemon tart was delicious. Everyone was convinced they'd made the right choice with their order! Lastly, the ice tea was a hit. Cold brew steeped, no sweet syrup shortcuts. Loved by our resident tea drinkers, impressed the coffee crew too. Fabulous coffee shop.

I really enjoyed my coffees here. I had two long blacks with two of the different types of coffee they roast on-site. The cookie was delicious too. It’s a really nice, relaxed environment and the service is brilliant too.

It's OK. I had a drip coffee. It seemed a bit thin and weak for my taste, very watery and lacking any depth of colour. Taste was ok, but nothing like I've had before, quite unusual. I had the lemon and poppy cake which was nice, the cream topping is very lemony. I looked at their coffee beans but felt they were a little overpriced, and since the drip coffee was a little weak I decided not to buy any.

I have long meant to write a review for the Crankhouse. It is probably my favourite coffeeshop in Exeter. A perfectly designed cafe, not too large, not too small (although almost always very bustling). Their coffee (roasted onsite) is superb. I can never resist a long black here. Today's was the perfect way to start a gentle Saturday, and the tart was mellow and perfect.

I've never visited Crankhouse Coffee in person, but I've been buying their coffee online and it's absolutely amazing. I've been searching for a roastery like this for a long time: quality, consistency, and a real passion for the craft in every bag. Their beans are second to none, often sourced from growers pushing the boundaries with interesting experimental processes, like extended fermentation or innovative drying methods that really shine through in the cup. If you care about good coffee, Crankhouse delivers. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Colombian decaf – usually these are a bit chocolatey for my taste, but this had a wonderfully balanced acidity. Staff were lovely, and persuaded me to have my banana bread toasted with butter – my life has changed for the better! Will return again soon, no doubt :)

A charming roastery café that truly knows how to deliver a perfect coffee experience. Their freshly roasted coffee is rich, aromatic, and absolutely satisfying, pairing beautifully with a selection of delightful pastries that are crafted to perfection. Every sip and bite feels thoughtfully made. The cozy, welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal place to relax or catch up with friends. Plus, the staff are exceptionally lovely—warm, attentive, and passionate about what they do. A true hidden gem for coffee lovers looking for quality and charm.

This is my favourite local business for a lot of very good reasons. If I had to sum up the roastery and the cafe in one word: masterful. Dave is so passionate and good at what he does. Such a keen eye for sourcing wonderful green beans combined with his skillful choice in roast profile creates coffee with so much depth of taste that never disappoints. Tony, Rosie and everyone at the cafe expertly take said coffee and brew/pull such wonderful drinks from it. Even their milk based drinks like flat whites retain that taste depth which is no easy feat. To top it off, the cakes and pastries are unrivaled.
