18 Weird, Wondrous Places for Wine-Lovers Around the Globe

"Cricova takes the notion of a “wine city” to another level, in more ways than one. About 260 feet below this little-known Moldovan town, over 75 miles of limestone caves are home to about 1.3 million bottles of wine. The fertile region surrounding the town of Cricova had no problem becoming a major source of wine for the USSR by the mid-1900s. They did have a problem storing all of it, however. Conveniently, the excavation of vast amounts of limestone to build the nearby capital of Chişinău left a sprawling underground network of cool, dry caves, ideal for aging and storing wine. As more limestone was mined to build the city, more space was created underground to host an imperial collection of bottled wine. After Milestii Mici, another underground Moldovan winery, Cricova is the second-largest wine cellar on the planet.  Today, the above-ground winery is a jack of all trades, producing more than 150 styles, including basics such as muscat, pinot noir, cabernet, and sauvignon blanc, but also unique local varieties such as rkaţiteli and aligote. The “streets” and “avenues” that make up the underground booze-storage metropolis are named for the wines they store, helping tour guides navigate visitors through the network by mini-train. The winery is most famous for producing a sparkling variety known as kodrinskoie, utilizing methods made famous by French monk Dom Pierre Pérignon. According to Balkan Insight, a team of five women rotates as many as 35,000 bottles of the sparkling vino 45 degrees in wooden slots to encourage the movement of sediments. Though an over-the-top underground oddity, the site was made a visiting point for all official delegations to the USSR and, even after its collapse, still holds the collections of various political heavyweights. Angela Merkel, John Kerry, Joe Biden, and Petro Poroshenko all visited and were gifted private collection spaces. Vladimir Putin has an impressive assortment of wines here, and, according to Forbes, a gold-plated mini-car to take him through the tunnels. While no politician, the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, is rumored to have gotten lost in the caves for hours (guides like to joke that it was easier for him to get into space than out of the wine cellar).  Perhaps most shockingly, the wine collection of Hermann Göring, one of Hitler’s henchmen, rests here, as well. After the Red Guard took Berlin, his collection of more than 2,000 bottles from regions occupied by Germany during World War II were brought here to continue aging.  After each tour, visitors can sample an array of wines in one of the facility’s five extravagant tasting rooms, including “The Sea Bottom,” a nautical-themed room; the “Presidential Hall,” meant to host official delegates; and the unambiguous “Fireplace Room.” Feel free to purchase as much wine from the store as you’d like. Cricova’s not running out any time soon." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Cricova and the famous underground wineries in Moldova The Cricova cellars are the second largest winery in the world and therefore unique on a global scale. The cellars cover over 53 hectares, creating a true underground city, with streets, traffic lights, and road signs. It comprises 120 km of underground corridors, 80 km of which are used for wine storage. The complex is so large that we travel around it by electric car. For those interested, a tasting is available after the tour. Tour prices start at €20, with tastings included from €40. It's worth booking our tour in advance, as places sell out quickly. If you're in Moldova, this is a place worth visiting if you're in the area.

Very nice and unique place, we rode on a mini trains through the winery, our tour guide was amazing. I recommend the tour. We also had the wine degustation, but I had better wines, so I was not that much amazed from it. Maybe just the selection was poor. Anyway, i really recommend it.

Cricova is a renowned winery in Moldova, famous for its massive underground cellars and a vast collection of wines. Here's a breakdown of what makes it so special Cricova is located in the town of the same name, about 15 kilometers north of the capital city, Chișinău. The winery's most distinctive feature is its "underground city" of wine cellars. These are former limestone mines that have been converted into an extensive network of tunnels, stretching for an estimated 120 kilometers (75 miles), with about 80 kilometers used for wine storage and maturation. The tunnels are so large that visitors can drive through them, and the "streets" are even named after different grape varieties like Cabernet, Feteasca, and Sauvignon. The constant temperature of 10-12°C (50-54°F) and high humidity (97-98%) in the cellars provide ideal conditions for aging wine. Cricova is a major producer of a wide range of wines, including red, white, and rosé. They are particularly known for being the first winery in Moldova to produce sparkling wine using the traditional French method (Méthode Traditionnelle), which involves a second fermentation in the bottle. The winery produces wines from both local Moldovan grape varieties like Fetească Neagră, Fetească Regală, and Viorica, as well as classic international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio. Some of their notable products include Amplius, Cuvée Prestige, and Rose de Cricova. Cricova offers various tours that allow visitors to explore the underground city, learn about the winemaking process, and, of course, enjoy wine tastings. Some tours even include meals served in beautifully decorated tasting rooms within the cellars.

Very much worth the visit when you stop by to the restaurant next to it. Cherry on top: Giggino Di Maio went there, who abolished poverty in Italy.

A once in a lifetime (at least!) experience! Thank you, Liliana, our guide, for making the experience even more memorable with all the knowledge you shared during the trip and also, during the wine tasting experience! Please book in advance! P.s. the restaurant food is amazing!

Fascinating place with a great history and tasty wine! The underground tour is a must-do activity, the ride with the electric 'train' is nice and the stuff you see underneath is very interesting. I recommend buying the 200 MLD souvenir before you start the tour, so in the end they could just give it to you (it's two bottles, but they are worth it)
