When traveling around the world, but especially in small town USA, I love trying locally made ice cream. An odd interest, considering it is often made sweeter than I like, but it is usually good ice cream. In Hammondsport, the place to go is Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company, which I incidentally found while looking for breakfast options.
Taking its name from Keuka Lake's nickname, Crooked Lake is a pristine, modern cafe with a rustic soda fountain look, white with black and wood accents with booth seating and cafe chairs/tables. I went for ice cream, which delivered as hoped: creamy, dense, and tasting naturally like its flavor, and a bit too sweet for me but probably great for most.
They also serve breakfast and lunch, offering a limited menu during the summer and fall of 2020 because of the pandemic. As a great fan of breakfast sandwiches, it is more common to find decent ones than exceptional, and it was a pleasant discovery that Crooked Lake is fantastic at it. Juicy, tasty sausage patties or bacon, fried eggs just cooked through, soft brioche buns, and good jams that accent the sandwiches with just the right bit of sweetness. Scrambled eggs are fluffy, the hash browns crispy and fresh. Just about perfect. Timewise, it never worked out to try their lunch sandwiches but I wouldn't hesitate to.
Located on the Hammondsport square, next to the Park Inn, and easily accessible in the village. Go for breakfast!
