I stayed for two nights on a 2-for-1 B&B offer, paying £300 in total, and at that price this was excellent value.||I was in Castle Room 7 on the top floor (there's a lift), which is genuinely large and beautifully furnished, with proper space to relax rather than just sleep. The en-suite is walk-in shower only, so if a bath is essential I’d recommend checking in advance, but the shower itself was excellent, with a proper rain head, good pressure, quality toiletries and a flannel provided. Turn-down service was thoughtful and included both milk and dark chocolates.||The public rooms are a real strength of the hotel: calm, well-proportioned spaces with a relaxed, grown-up atmosphere. Staff across reception, bar, and restaurant were confident, personable, and happy to chat without being intrusive, which made a big difference to the overall feel. I felt the staff would do their best to met any reasonable request. ||Dinner on Monday and Tuesday is served in the Palm Court style restaurant, Foveran’s, which suited a quieter, more relaxed evening perfectly. From Wednesday to Sunday, dinner is served in Trocadero’s, which features live music and attracts non-residents, so the atmosphere is likely to be livelier later in the week. The dinner was very good; the game pie was genuinely excellent and piping hot, easily the highlight of the meal. When the restaurant became busier later in the evening, I was initially seated near the bar area, but on mentioning it I was moved immediately and without any fuss to a quieter table, which was handled professionally and appreciated.||Wine pricing was sensible by hotel standards, and the final bill for dinner, a bottle of wine, bar bill and even a packed lunch came to £145, which felt fair rather than inflated.||A few minor points worth noting. Castle rooms do not have mini fridges (newer block rooms do). Breakfast is served in the newer building, which means a short walk from the castle. Also, the Bloody Mary breakfast bar has withdrawn following a change of policy, although it is still referenced online. Updating the website would help manage expectations.||Overall, this feels very much like a destination hotel, particularly well suited to leisure stays, celebrations, and events such as weddings, which clearly form a big part of its character. It’s less obviously aimed at overnight business travellers, but for a relaxed castle stay booked sensibly, the value, service, and atmosphere were excellent. I would happily return.
