First visit to Carlisle apart from football and chose this hotel as it was central and near our concert venue. ||We stay away a lot and always somewhere different and generally aware you get what you pay for. Hotel is in a great location right in the centre and on the square that is currently being redeveloped to what seems like a very high standard. We came by train and it’s only a 5 minute walk from train station - seen some negative reviews re parking & if we had chose to drive i think we would be a little more understandable as the whole town centre being redeveloped - parking at back of hotel with and intercom when gates shut. ||Friendly welcome on arrival & you can see hotel was very grand in its era - superb staircase next to reception & photos of famous visits (prime ministers & USA presidents no less). Our room was in the annexe at back of hotel across the car park with double aspect windows - wall view, car park view and abbey view so a mixed bag. Room was large and clean and that’s all we really ask. Slight negative the wash basin was in the room & not in the bathroom - little odd and the bed seemed to be a 3/4 bed but more than enough room for a bigger bed. Other than that no gripes - mirror / hair dryer (no use to me but partner happy), tea & coffee dejection with biscuits, tv & toiletries etc. |Breakfast was decent too. Very grand dining room overlooking square, linen table cloths and tea / coffee order taken on arrival. Usual hit and cold subjects on offer with choice of toast so no complaints and again friendly staff. |Wouldn’t hesitate to stay again.

It's not really 4* but 3 felt a bit mean. It looks like it was really posh once. These days they seem to do a very good job with the money they have. Our room was in the main building and, while I don't think it has seen a paint brush for many years, it was in good condition and the bed was large and comfortable with nice pillows. The bathroom was similarly clean and in good condition and things worked properly. The staff are helpful and pleasant.

Second stay here. Really comfortable, spacious ensuite room with a shower over the bath. Good cooked breakfast. So convenient for Carlisle city centre with limited, secure car parking. Signage for rooms could really do with reviewing! Extensive paving work being undertaken in front of the hotel but our room at the rear was very quiet. NB Photos taken on previous visit.

Excellent location comfortable beds we had a nice room. Limited parking so had to park elsewhere but only a short walk and cost £8 for 24 hours. Nice bar area. Didn’t have food as we were visiting friends who lived locally and had breakfast with them. Breakfast room looked lovely. Staff very helpful and friendly

Short one night stay on our road trip south. Despite the regeneration building work going on throughout city center, this hotel was ideally placed for bars and restaurants. Staff friendly, secure parking included and although a little small, our room was clean, well laid out and had a modern feel to it despite the hotel being an older building. Bonus points for USB points at both sides of the bed and for the walk in shower with both traditional shower or rainfall. Big tv and coffee making facilities including biscuits. Didnt use the pool facilities or restaurant but room service also available. Would definitely stay again.

This hotel is lovely and we'd definitely stay here again! The rooms were lovely and clean, a good size and nice and warm (it was rainy and cold when we visited so we were happy with this). The pool is really nice, the ceiling let's in nice natural light which is relaxing when floating around the pool. The location is good with a Tesco express and pretty much all shops you'd need to within a short walk. Lots of restaurants too nearby. The service on the front desk wasn't ideal but the service we received from the Scottish lady serving breakfast was WONDERFUL. She made sure I had a veggie option for my breakfast and kept our teas and coffee topped up. She was lovely.

Everything is on your doorstep here, the castle, cathedral, shops, restaurants and bars. They have free parking (which is amazing for a city centre hotel) and even free EV charging. Not many people know it also has a pool so I had this all to myself. The staff are great and they have a good selection of food and drink. It’s an old building so there are odd staircases like an M C Escher painting but that adds to the charm.

Loved our stay here and our room in the annex was very nice and practical with an ample sized wardrobe, two comfortable easy chairs with a small table unlike many other hotels that never seem to provide these for a couple.Breakfast was superb with a good selection and the staff are generally very helpful and friendly. It was nice to meet up with Alistair who has been on the management team for many years and still has that wicked humour which always makes us laugh. He's a gem and seems well respected by the staff. The hotel is generally well maintained and clean which is always good to see.I suppose the only downfall is the very limited parking around the back with awkward access due to the mammoth refurbishment of the city streets nearby. It's very likely we'll return when we can and to explore the surrounding areas that we did .

Yelp
This was our second visit and what a difference from the first. We had a superior room which was gorgeous and spacious. The decor was lovely and the bathroom was great. The small touches were lovely e.g. slippers and dressing gown. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Staff were so helpful and attentive. I'm looking forward to the next stay.

Yelp
This hotel in one word: charming. An old school building, likely a hotel long, long ago that has been updated and maintained quite nicely by a professional hotel management group in the UK. An easy walk from the main rail station, it has a staggering amount of history in the city centre making it an ideal holiday getaway to my mind. If you're looking for charming pubs serving hardy country fare to haute cuisine it's not difficult to find. Breakfast this morning was buffet and consisted of about everything you expect at small inns (ie., too much food) with "black puddin'" being the exception. I'll get my fill of that later on this trip. Gorgeous restaurant contained within that a nearby coffee shop and bar spoke highly of and a nice looking bar that had a lot of appeal as a nice place to spend some quality time, though I didn't, but only because I had other matters to attend to. Priced right in my opinion, though I opted only for one of the smallest rooms as this was nothing more than an overnight stay before heading to my next destination. A wonderful place to stay, I made a good choice.

Yelp
Right in the heart of the shopping thoroughfare. Reception area lovely and well marked out to support social distancing. The room although in need of decoration and modernisation, is clean and comfy. Staff are pleasant and helpful.
