We got there for the 1pm tour of the island rum distillery. The lady at the gate warned us to make sure there was a designated driver. Uh, that wasn't me.
There was a 5 dollar fee and a little wait, after all it was just the end of lunch and we are on the islands. Our tour guide appeared and the tour started promptly. We got to the large vats, about 20 all over and each one was roughly about 12 feet wide and 24 feet high. The stairs were steep, and the smell of the fermenting rum was intoxicating.
I thought I had died and gone to rum heaven. Besides the large containers, there was another covered area with hundreds of barrels, each one with about 100 gallons of aging rum. We walked all over looking at more containers, until finally got to the guest area. I would have done anything to take one of those barells with me.
At the guest area there were over 50 different bottles of rum along the wall, and all sorts of flavors: banana, mango, coconut, and more. Our tour guide poured our first elixir, then another taste. We took our time sipping, and we tried another flavor, and another. We tasted the coconut cream rum, and tasted the black rum which tasted like molasses. To our surprise, all the sugar is imported from Guatemala. But the rum poured like a never ending spicket.
The tour was fantastic, but our guide was a little hard to understand. This is definitely more hands on than the Bacardi Rum factory in San Juan.
At the end, I'm glad I wasn't driving since all the rum and the island heat got to my head. Luckily we had a light lunch before tasting. This is a place to check out if ever in St. Croix.
