A perfect weekend getaway in Ooty - SilverKris

"A graceful early-19th-century church (originally built of wood in 1829) noted for its stained-glass windows, elegant arches and striking yellow façade; its adjacent cemetery includes graves of the wife and daughter of John Sullivan, the town’s founder." - Charukesi Ramadurai

Absolutely serene and outstanding. Easily some of the best stained glass work I have ever seen in one of the most iconic churches in India. The cemetery at the back is poignant reminder of the past and is atmospheric in its own way, with the trees and overgrowth. Am glad the whole space is well preserved.

Loved the way it is situated and maintained by the managing team. Parking is an issue inside the premises. They should make a separate parking lot at neighbourhoods but not in premises. I was fortunate enough to witness the Sunday service there. Beautiful hymns and spirituality. One must visit the place and sit for a white to have the feel of the place. I was returning from Ramkrishna math and got dropped at church. Thanks to God

The architecture of the church is truly a sight to behold, showcasing intricate detailing. The serene atmosphere within the church provides a sense of peace and tranquility for every visitor. The stained glass windows allow colorful light to illuminate the interior, creating a mesmerizing effect. It's clear that great care has been taken in preserving the church's historical significance. Visiting this church is a highly recommended experience for anyone seeking a moment of reflection.

Founded in the colonial era, the church’s foundation stone was laid on 23 April 1829 by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, Governor of Madras, while its consecration took place on 5 November 1830, and public services began on 3 April 1831 . • Designed by Captain John James Underwood (Madras Regiment), it famously incorporates timber from Tipu Sultan’s palace, transported over Sigur Ghat at significant effort and expense (around ₹24,000 at the time) . • The church reflects early Gothic colonial architecture, with pale‑yellow exteriors, a modest clock tower, and a serene flower garden adjacent to the entrance Avoid Sundays if your aim is to explore—services may restrict interior access. • Visit early in the day to enjoy tranquil surroundings and soft natural light through the stained glass. • Mind the cemetery behind the church—historic, evocative, but with modest upkeep. • Respect during prayer times and maintain silence to honor the sacred space.

A beautiful church in the centre of Ooty built in 1830 and now used as a practicing church of the Church of South India. There are some attractive stained glass windows. There is a big area around with gardens. The church and compounds are well preserved and maintained. No entry tickets are required. Parking is available in the compound.

It's a 195 year old church. Beautiful and peaceful. The stained glass inside is beautiful and not to be missed.

⭐ Review for C.S.I. St. Stephen's Church, Ooty I visited this beautiful church as a solo traveler, and it was such a peaceful and refreshing stop in Ooty. The moment I walked in, I was surrounded by lush green plants and the charming architecture that reflects the British colonial era. It really stands out with its old-world charm. Inside the church, it was incredibly quiet—which gave me a nice moment to just relax and slow down. The interior is well-maintained, especially the vintage furniture that’s still in great shape. Just a heads-up: I didn’t notice any toilet facilities available there, so plan accordingly. Getting there by public transport was simple and added to the experience. I took a bus from Ooty main bus stand. Right near the railway station entrance, there’s a small mini-bus stand. Hop on the one going towards Hill Bunk Junction—the ride is about ₹10 and only takes 5 minutes. Once you get off, the church is a short 500-meter walk. Just follow Google Maps. ✨ Bonus tip for explorers: Instead of the main road, take the small slope path to the left after getting off at Hill Bunk. It’s a more scenic and peaceful walk. Definitely worth visiting for history lovers and those looking for a calm spot in the middle of Ooty. 🙏
