Founded in the colonial era, the church’s foundation stone was laid on 23 April 1829 by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, Governor of Madras, while its consecration took place on 5 November 1830, and public services began on 3 April 1831 .
• Designed by Captain John James Underwood (Madras Regiment), it famously incorporates timber from Tipu Sultan’s palace, transported over Sigur Ghat at significant effort and expense (around ₹24,000 at the time) .
• The church reflects early Gothic colonial architecture, with pale‑yellow exteriors, a modest clock tower, and a serene flower garden adjacent to the entrance
Avoid Sundays if your aim is to explore—services may restrict interior access.
• Visit early in the day to enjoy tranquil surroundings and soft natural light through the stained glass.
• Mind the cemetery behind the church—historic, evocative, but with modest upkeep.
• Respect during prayer times and maintain silence to honor the sacred space.
