The Most Wondrous State Parks to Visit During the Government Shutdown

"Throughout the centuries, many have attempted to find Satan’s kingdom. Turns out, it’s been in Connecticut all this time. You won’t actually find any fallen angels here, though. Instead, you’ll find bathing suit-clad locals, as Satan’s Kingdom State Recreation Area is a popular launch site for tubing down the Farmington River. Its name supposedly originates not out of any demonic rituals or religious activities, but rather because the area was horrible for farming. The story goes that a farmer cursed the land, saying nothing would grow in this rocky, unfertile soil because it was “Satan’s Kingdom.” And clearly, the name stuck. Another bit of local lore gives a different source for the name. It’s said that in earlier times, the area was a haven for thieves, robbers, and outlaws to the extent that “decent” people were afraid to visit. It was said that only “The Devil’s children” ruled there, hence the name “Satans Kingdom.” Satan’s Kingdom is all but unknown to anyone but locals. When non-locals drive past the recreation area, they tend to do a double take at the sign. Satan’s Kingdom has that effect on people. On warm days, it’s where everyone in the area goes to leisurely tube down the Farmington River. Tubing on the river began as recreation in the late 1970s with the space behind a farm stand (now long gone) chosen as the starting point. At first, it was something of a curiosity, but over time it took off as a big business. The farm stand eventually disappeared and a more formal launching point for tubing was put in place." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I am enormously disappointed in CT DEEP. Last night we received a call to go out and check on a baby swan that appeared to be in distress. Upon arrival, we quickly noticed that there was water dripping from his nose and beak and he was weak and lethargic. He was nearly a mile from his pond on a busy industrial road and his parents were no where in sight. Prior to my arrival, another friend in rescue had put in a call to your emergency dispatch center and was told to "go on our website and call the numbers until you get someone" ON A SATURDAY NIGHT... AT 7PM! Well, as you can imagine, that wasn't working for us. So, at this point, I decided to call myself. The woman who answered the phone was QUICK to interrupt before I could even finish explaining the concerns. She interrupted to lecture me on not touching the swan, letting us know that parents were taking care of it, if it gets hit by a car oh well, and let me know there is nothing wrong with the swan. I had to cut her off with obvious frustration in my voice and point out the fact that she didn't even let me finish before interrupting and that I'm calling her for help and she's not helping, she then put me on a brief hold and came back with 2 phone numbers. I called them both, left messages and ended up having to figure it all out on my own. What this woman didn't know is that she was speaking to former VP and current member of a promonant rescue organization here in CT. Rescue is what we do, wildlife, however, is NOT our specialty. BUT that wasn't going to stop me from doing everything in my power to save this baby. So I reached out and got a hold of several vets ALL of which agreed this swan was in distress and needed immediate medical attention. Quite the opposite of what the woman who answered the phone had to say... she couldn't be bothered to help or apparently even care! I scooped up the swan, put him in the back of my car and drove him 30 minutes to a vet that would help... a vet I had to spend 2 hours trying to find and once he is stable we will release him back to his pond. Why have an emergency line if the people answering are clearly annoyed when their attempts to shoo you off the phone, FAIL? I am appalled! I am outraged! And I am disgusted! Shame on you DEEP. That woman is what represents you... and my tax dollars go to fund you... I expect the people answering your phones to understand that they work for the people of this state and treat them all with the respect they deserve! Please use some of my tax dollars to retrain your staff.

I've been coming here since 1975. Today I was told by your staff that I couldn't park in the shade for 30 minutes and sit in my car. It was early in the day. The lot wasn't even half full. I went back and told the young man at the main gate that there was no reason I needed to be forced to park in full sun in the middle of a heatwave. After spending 30 minutes there, watching your customers trash the park, I got disgusted and left. On my way out, I tried to hand one of the staff members a box full of junk that their clients left in the parking lot that I had picked out of the woods. . He refused to take it and pointed to a dumpster across the way.. This tubing business absolutely ruined this park.

If you want help with wildlife, they have no idea what they are doing. They treat wildlife rehabilitators horribly. They threaten them constantly. DEEP Has a history of killing defenseless animals how are they not held Accountable

I am so disappointed in the free admission to all state parks for all CT residents. Yes I understand we pay enough taxes here but now you have overfilled and understaffed parks that are not as enjoyable to go to anymore. This capacity all the time is not very sustainable.

Be cautious of this organization. Always confirm that whatever you're contacting them about actually falls under their jurisdiction. They have little, if any, authority over any environmental issues within the state. They seem to be in place to simply gather information from residents in the form of complaints and to compile that data for as yet unknown reasons, then refer you on to other departments within the state, local or federal government. Don't waste your time. Work through your local municipality and if necessary, contact the Federal EPA and/or State officials.
