The Ultimate List of Wonderfully Specific Museums

"On the 30th of October, every clock in the United Kingdom will be celebrating a centennial milestone. In the midst of the First World War, Parliament passed the Summertime Act of 1916, creating what’s come to be known as British Summer Time. So when the timepieces of the nation “fall back” one hour, Roman and Maz Piekarski will be very busy brothers. The Piekarskis are the owners, proprietors, and restorers-in-residence of Cuckooland, home to a collection of over 700 cuckoo clocks. This year, on the one hundredth anniversary of British Summer Time coming to a close, the two horologists (a fancy name for clock masters) will once again be resetting the time on all the working clocks in their vast collection.  The brothers have been studying clocks and watches since they were teenagers. They soon began collecting these fanciful and elaborate clocks, honing an expertise in their history and mechanics. Since 1970, their collection has grown to nearly 700 examples of some of the finest and rarest ever made, all from the one true home of the cuckoo clock – the Black Forest region of central Europe. It took about 20 years of clock-chasing, but eventually the breadth and depth of the Piekarski’s collection left them no choice but to spread the gospel of the cuckoo to the public, opening their doors in 1990. Cuckooland is not just clocks, and one piece in particular might even drown out the cacophony of several hundred chiming at once: a German keyless concert organ. Also known as a fair organ, it’s what you’d hear accompanying carrousels and fair rides, made specifically loud enough to hear over the crowds.   Cuckooland doesn’t keep regular hours, but call or email to set up a visit or a tour. They’ll be happy to hear from you (if they can hear you over the cuckoos and the organ)." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Fabulous day visiting the cuckoo clock museum, I find cuckoo clocks fascinating and the exhibits in the collection did not disappoint. The collection is owned and maintained by two brothers who have dedicated their lives to the collection, they are extremely knowledgeable about the history of all the clocks and are skilled craftsmen in clockmaking having done this since they were teenagers. I was able to get a quote for the repair of my old clock and look forward to collecting it fully restored in a couple of months time. Also a good excuse to go back and have another look! Update 21/8/25 Unfortunately since writing this review the museum has allegedly closed down and although I have contacted the owner on several occasions I have been unable to get my clock back, the owner actually denying he had it at one point. When pushed he gave a lot of excuses why the repair hadnt been done and that he would contact me when completed. Needless to say 18months later I have heard nothing. My guess would be the collection has been sold and my clock with it !

Unbelievable number of cuckoo clocks as well as the antique machinery and tools used to produce them. Felt guilty that I did not look at every item but it's overwhelming. The carving on some (made from one piece of wood) was outstanding. Not only do they collect they also repair and their expertise and knowledge is utterly remarkable. Must book in advance don't just roll up.

Been to the cuckooland place today (you must phone and book first) what an amazing place to visit run by 2 brothers, they have a vast knowledge of them and who they once belonged to, lots of history to each piece. They also repair if anyone wants one fixing. The detail in one piece of wood they are carved from is very detailed in every way. You couldn't choose 1 clock as a favourite as every one was different in detail and very different, there was carved birds, hares, boars, and even conkers well worth a visit. Cash only as they don't take card

Had a privilege to see some of the collection today. It's being moved to Ireland. Maz was very kind to show us round despite the fact it is officially closed. Unfortunately one of the brothers-Roman,who was part of this undoubtedly charming cuckoo clock wonderland, passed recently. I take my hat off to both of the gentlemen for the amazing passion and regret I have only now learnt about this quirky, yet magical place. The time will never stop... PS. The two doggies (roties) are so well behaved and well trained.

What an amazing place! I visited Cuckooland this afternoon and found it both intriguing ... and quite educational! But how sad that this privately run and owned museum has no sponsors or backers. Their collection is huge -(I think they are confident that it's the largest collection of cuckoo clocks in the world). But you leave worrying what will happen to this huge, amazing and unique collection when Roman and his brother can no longer run it themselves. I feel very privileged to have seen and visited this wonderful museum.

If you like cuckoo clocks this place is fo you. There is a charge as the place is privately owned. You need to phone ahead and get yourself attached to a tour group. I have been interested in cuckoo clocks for 50 years but saw more clocks today than I have in the whole of my life. The range, style, quantity and variation of clocks is only part of the experience as there is a quantity of unrelated items to view that are also very interesting. This is somewhere to visit before it's gone as there can be nowhere like it in the world today.

Why don't they make it clear on the website that it is APOINTMENT ONLY AND PUT A HUGE SIGN UP I get it is their home..their rules. Instead of intimidating a young family with their Rottwellers mske it clear that you CALL FIRST. And cash only in the shop???? Really??? "If some folks say cash only these days it means some folk may also only wish to bypass HMRC". NOT NICE FRIENDLY OLD MEN more paranoid and grumpy I would say👌
