25 Best Places to Visit in South America

"Jardín is a small town a few hours south of Medellín with colonial architecture, beautiful scenery, and lots to do. Recommended activities include visiting Cueva del Esplendor and local coffee farms. The best time to visit is August and September, coinciding with the annual Jardin Film Festival." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Beautifully unique waterfall. About an hour walk of you’re fast from the entrance to the visitor center. 20.000 COP entrance and you get a guided tour to the waterfall. You can swim in the watering hole, its a bit cold but totally worth it.

Really nice here. Special waterfall. We hiked all the way up here and down again from the City (Jardín) 10/11 km each way. Takes 3,5 hours up and 2,5 hours down☺️ All along with a nice view.🏞️

You can do a beautiful circular loop from Jardin to the Cueva and back, in total about 19km. You walk through the green mountains, meet cows and colorful birds and enjoy incredible views. You definitely need good condition, sturdy shoes and ideally an app to navigate (I used OrganicMaps). It takes about 7-8 hours in total but is really worth it!

Beautiful place. Birds, bats and lots of nature. You can take a tuk tuk 🛺 from jardín (40k each way) and then walk for 1.5 h, it costs 20k COP. You can also book a tour for 70k that includes water, snacks and transportation.

The cave and waterfall are rather lovely, but I still wouldn't recommend going here. It feels like a bit of a tourist trap. You're forced to go with a guide and pay 20,000 COP per person to go the final mile or so to the waterfall, even though the trail is perfectly fine. When you go inside the reserve, the gate is locked behind you. In our case, when we went back, we had to wait for 20 minutes (with 30 other people) until the guides came up to open the gate. Communication about this was zero. We were basically locked inside the reserve! The personnel wasn't friendly, either. All in all, I wouldn't recommend going here. And to the staff: please consider organizing this better. There is no use for having guides here. This places deserves better.

Don’t miss visiting this lovely reserve. It’s not just the cave, but the preserved natural forest is amazing.

It took us three hours from where we were to reach this place, however, it was totally worth it. After walking through rain, tall grass, mud, cow poop and everything in between, we arrived at the cueva del esplendor. Before actually going down to see it though, you arrive at a small little building where you pay to access the cave. After paying, they offer you a free drink of your choosing, between water, lemonade and coffee. They have other things being sold on their menu if you desire something to eat or simply a different kind of drink. After this, the guide then takes you down a path that leads to the cave. It is truly a sight to behold and well worth the trek to get there. You can swim around in the pool formed by the water although we did not because we were already wet from the rain haha. Big shoutout to the workers at this lookout who ordered us a jeep to take us back to Jardin. After all that walking, we realized it was a better idea to get a ride back to town, as nightfall would soon catch us.

A stunning waterfall with amazing landscape. 6-8 mil/pp to get up by taxi to the gate, from there it is a 1 hour walk to the ranger's station. The guide will then take you to the waterfall for a small fee. :) On the way back you can share a taxi with other travellers, they charge 100 mil/the whole jeep (can fit 10 people)
