Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Belfast, Northern Ireland

"On the shores of Belfast's lough, The Culloden Estate and Spa is a serene escape from the buzzy city scene. The best part is that guests are a speedy train trip away from central Belfast—the nearest station is just two minutes from the hotel. The building itself was originally constructed in 1876 as a palace for the Bishop of Down and has since been transformed into a palatial five-star hotel set on 12 acres of secluded woodland with commanding views over the lake and the rugged Antrim coastline."

Culloden Estate and Spa (Belfast, UK) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"High in the Holywood hills, five miles outside of town, you’ll find what may be Belfast’s grandest old hotel. The 19th-century Culloden Estate and Spa cuts an impressive silhouette, surrounded by twelve acres of wooded parklands and gardens overlooking the waters of Belfast Lough. Once a bishops’ residence, then a private home, today it’s the sort of place that hosts pop stars and heads of state on their way through town." - Tablet Hotels

Myself and my niece stayed with you from the 7thto 10 August 2025.||We were greeted at reception and the day porter to the suite Milford suite was excellent.||Arriving in the room or spacious clean and a lovely view of the gardens I did request a Lough view But that was fine.||The Prosecco I ordered was on ice. I did request a bowl of fruit uncut, but it did come cut the reason why I asked it to uncut it so it can last for two or three days and we can eat the fruit as and when we want it and due to the fact that I was disappointed, there was no fridge in the room. We had to ask it for it to be cling filmed taken downstairs and replaced every day or could we have a fridge they did bring a bottle fridge up to the room.||Now, what was very strange was the turn down service at night we came back from a day and arrived back at the hotel at approximately 6 PM to find the room hadn’t been serviced or part of it hadn’t.||I had left the empty tissue box in the bathroom so that the staff could see that the replacement needed to be made. The bins have been emptied. The bed has been half made, but there was still dirty cups and champagne, glasses, and a pint glass left from when we arrive the night before so I wasn’t quite sure why the room hadn’t been serviced totally I was told that we needed to put the please clean the room sign out the door, which I should’ve known better being a hotel manager that’s what we should’ve done, but the staff had gone in and partly clean the room, not all of it.||I would suggest like I used to do in my hotels is to get the duty head of housekeeping to check that all rooms had been cleaned and serviced properly. I know it’s time consuming but when you book a suite it’s very important and things like this can be left..||What was also very strange And disappointing is the second night we found a pair of pants under the bed, which weren’t ours so the night before we arrived. The room hasn’t been serviced correctly either so definitely see needs to be something to be looked at Customers expectation when paying +300 pound a night room should be serviced correctly.||Myself my wife run a bespoke four bedroom bed-and-breakfast in the Isle of Man and we have a checklist even with four rooms and it’s very important that you do that because we get caught out sometimes.||So marked out of 10 for your sweet, I’d probably give you a six.||Breakfast was exceptional. Staff were very pleasant. Dinner was exceptional.||massage and spa and pool was exceptional. The only disappointing bit. I think you need to do maintenance on Pool There’s a lot of rust around the edge of the pool and that’s not fresh again being in the industry you pick up on stuff like that so I think that needs to be looked at an address.||The pub down the bottom of the garden food was excellent. In the main hotel lounge area, I think a little bit more attention to detail to dusting and checking behind cushions and seats as I found some chewing gum and some meringue nests obviously left from a function, but they do need Hoover right now and again.Staff was excellent grounds were superb.||So overall, we had a fantastic weekend little bit disappointed in the suite for what I paid and I’m well aware I was on summer rate and upgraded, but even so the room should have been serviced correctly so for the whole hotel I give you eight out of 10.||Please give me your feedback onto my email which is nigel@albanytours.co.uk||Please have a look at our webpage||www.albanyhouse.im||||We were inspected by the Hotel inspector off of Channel 4 about eight years ago and we did get 10 out of 10.||||Regards||||Nigel Sperring

We stayed here April 17th for our mini honeymoon for 3 nights, we were upgraded on arrival to the bishop suite which was simply superb! Having just been married this was the cherry on the cake! It was absolutely beautiful and I couldn’t have wished for a better stay! The staff were simply fantastic and our room was beyond our dreams! They made our honeymoon extra special and we will definitely return one day! Highly recommend to anyone who has anything to celebrate or just wants an unforgettable luxurious experience!

I will start by saying all staff are extremely friendly and caring when they have the time to do so. ||However when the small bar area was busy upon our arrival, the attentiveness and service goes down hill vastly. 40 minutes to get a seat and once seated to have the table cleared and served was far too long. Once seated the lovely waitress did try and make up for the wait. ||Manager/ bar lead was far to busy dealing with complaints (one table got £200 of food comped after complaining) to do anything about the service. ||The bathroom inside the Deluxe King room was dirty, missing grout and overall a very bad layout. If you have mobility issues/ are not very tall you will have issues getting into the bathtub/ shower. ||The room was not vacuumed and the scatter cushions were still inside the wardrobe. There was no coffee maker, simply powdered coffee sachets. ||The level of service greatly depends on how you present/ come across to staff. We saw one manager direct a staff member to a couple who were seated after us. The same thing happened with breakfast, some couples given an order menu and others told to go to the buffet. We have not seen the same habits in any other 5star we have stayed at. ||The spa was delightful, great facilities and friendly staff. Clean and would go back to use these. ||Cultra inn saved this stay for us. Service could not have been better and the food was delicious. Quick and efficient service. ||Overall a disappointing stay. I left all these comments with reception on a comment card and have little faith anyone will be in touch. |The receptionist agreed with me and offered no follow up/ confidence anything would be done. He then went on and charged me twice for drinks I had charged to the room. ||I would put this more at a 4 star, in a stunning building with lovely grounds to walk in.

We had the most enjoyable 3 night stay in the Culloden with our family. |Very friendly helpful staff who were so kind to the children and made them feel welcome. Cormac and staff were all so lovely. |The train is right by the hotel grounds and it made visiting Belfast city so seamless .. 20 mins to the city centre! It was very easy to access all the main attractions in Belfast city right from the hotel! |Breakfast was excellent and we enjoyed a lovely lunch in the Cultra Inn. |Overall, a wonderful time and look forward to coming back! Thanks to all at The Culloden.

Pricey for an overnight stay but was luxury. Hotel was clean and modern in places. Spa was great and not crowded. Nice pool with sauna, steam room and whirlpool area. Drinks and food are available to buy at the pool area. There were no robes available at the pool area so we had get changed in our room and wear our robes down and walk through the reception and bar area. There are open changing rooms at the spa. Staff were friendly and helpful. Overall had a lovely stay but was expensive. 4 stars for the room as we had to change rooms due to poor view overlooking a roof.

We stayed in the Culloden hotel 8th-10th August for our anniversary. From checking in the staff were 5star and a credit to the General Manager. We ate in the restaurant and the food was superb. The restaurant staff were excellent and totally faultless. We will definitely return and look forward to another weekend again soon.

Beautiful stay, this was one of the beautiful stays. We where lucky to also see art exhibition outside and inside hotel, very relaxing, stayed in suite, which was breathtaking and so beautiful. We also had lovely dinner in Cultra Inn, and want to say food is amazing, you can also sit outside for a bubbly one surrounded by beautiful views.Want to thank Cormac, who really helped us with our stay. We come back again !

Yelp
Lovely grounds right on the water but this is not a 5 star experience. The rooms are dated, and inconsistent. One person in our group didn't have a phone in their room (to which the front desk just looked puzzled but never actually provided a phone), another had an old / dated bathroom from the 90s. The service for drinks / food is pretty slow - you'll need to flag someone down if anything is needed. Lastly, we had a pretty horrendous dinner experience at the "pub" (cultra inn) on the property. When we finally got up to pay the bill, the other guests in front of us were complaining of similar issues / bad service. Lots of potential with this property, just not a 5 star hotel. We enjoyed the breakfast that was included.

Yelp
I discovered my favorite hotel experience in the world at Culloden Estate and Spa. Every aspect of our stay was exceptional. Let me break it down for you - this is the place to stay. The grounds are gorgeous with sculptures places throughout and lovely gardens. The building itself is stunning inside and out. Every design detail is thoughtfully placed. We met Jenny at the front desk on arrival and she perfectly represents the exceptional property itself. She was friendly, helpful and went the extra mile at every opportunity. She had a refrigerator brought to our room for medication, made our dinner and breakfast reservations for us and somehow got us appointments at the spa ( which we really needed). Every staff member we encountered exemplified "hospitality" at its best. Every room is lovely and if you cannot tell this is a 10 star review. If you have the opportunity, please give yourself the gift of staying here and be sure to utilize the spa with sauna, steam room and even a nap room for after your massage.

Yelp
Visited to view the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Extremely enjoyable day out walking throughout the hotel and beautiful grounds. Only drawback was that the Bolly Bus didn't open on time - staff seemed to be running late, however we did eventually manage to get drinks once it opened. Was an extremely entertaining day out.

Yelp
From the minute we drove into the driveway we knew that we were going to experience something really special. A beautiful building, amazing grounds, and then you walk inside. We walked up a grand staircase to our room - of course we could have taken the elevator. We did not use the spa, but it looked incredible and very well used as there were virtually no appointments available. We had high tea and the view was magnificent. If I had one suggestion to the hotel I would serve food in the bar later than 7 pm. I could not understand that one bit...... But to the acting General Manger - James and to the front desk staff you were incredible.

Yelp
This was a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location with beautiful grounds. The rooms were spacious and well-appointed. The rooms were clean and quiet. This was a very comfortable hotel and I was happy that this was one of the locations where we stayed for 2 nights. Unlike a lot of hotels in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, this hotel DID have air conditioning. For Americans touring Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, it's important to mention that most hotels don't have air conditioning and that you need to open the windows in order to moderate the temperature. We stayed at this hotel as part of a 15-day tour of Ireland and Scotland with CIE Tours. This hotel was selected by CIE and was one of 9 hotels we stayed in during our 2-week tour. We had 31 people in our group and typically occupied 16 rooms at each hotel we visited. Each hotel provided a full buffet breakfast every morning and typically we had dinner at least once at each hotel. We were at this hotel for 2 nights We had 1 dinner and 2 breakfasts at this hotel. The breakfast buffet was a traditional Irish breakfast (eggs, ham, sausage, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and a nice assortment of pastries and cereal).

Yelp
Aaron was an excellent concierge and gave us a full tour of the establishment. Garrett, the general manager, stopped by to say hello to us. Everyone was always pleasant and accommodating. We went out on the town and arrived too late to order food from the pub. However, they made some menu changes to serve our request. That made my wife very happy (we would have ordered whatever but they said they would do what they could since the pub was closed). Amazing views. Artwork all around the hotel to walk around and look at. Only downside is there is not much around here to do. It's in its own section of Belfast that's a bit on the higher end side (a 5-star hotel in the nice part of town, I know. I know.).

Yelp
I worked here as a house keeper around 2016 and it's one of the most luxurious hotel I've ever worked at the grounds and Building is gorgeous with private apartment at the entrance over looking the sea. The rooms and suites are plush with nice furnishings Christmas is the best time of the year at cullodeon and party's and weddings here is sheer opulence and staff here are happy and hardworking

Yelp
Simply a luxurious hotel with high standards and quality shining throughout. I stayed in one of their suites on the 7th floor and really enjoyed my stay. The hotel setting and grounds are lovely too.

Yelp
Stayed here with my mum. My neighbour always goes up north shopping and recommend it to us. I loved it. I'm a girl who loves luxury so it was right down my street. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was delicious and tip top quality. Breakfast the following morning was also delicious. My mum is a huge bushmilles fan so when she went up to get some porridge and saw bushmilles and an available topping option she was sold. We will be returning here every time we head up north A+ from me and mum I'll attach all my lovely pics for ya'll to see the pleasant stay we had

Yelp
Nice setting. Lush gardens. Have been to events here and used the spa. Spa is good. All amenities are close to each other. Which is great for ease of use. So good to have the Zest car have fruit in water that is free also fruit to take for free. Love the Greek statues. The steam room could do with a bit of a tidy up. Staff are helpful.

Yelp
We attended a family friends daughters wedding reception party yesterday at this first class venue. On arrival there was a drinks reception and canapés. After a short while the married couple entered and all 250 guests found their seats for an amazing four course Indian feast provided by Nu Delhi. After entertainment by some talented dancers there was a DJ who played into the night. A great evening had by all in a superb venue and excellent staff.

Yelp
Oh, I love the Culloden. Over the last few years I have been to black tie dinners, a wedding reception and have stayed at the hotel several times and have loved every moment. The interior of the hotel is all about opulence - huge heavy drapes, ornate furniture and giant lamps. There is an air of subdued elegance but you can still really let your hair down or take your children with you. If you're staying at the hotel you'll have the use of the Elysium health spa which is beautiful - a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna and really luxe changing room. The rooms in the hotel are top notch - well this is a 5 star joint. Mind you, I do have a story to report about the standard of the rooms. The last time we took the children to stay for the weekend at the Culloden, we were given a room which was just plain disappointing. Nothing major, but in a 5 star hotel with 5 star prices, stained carpets, ripped bed covers and a broken phone just doesn't cut it. The husband cringed while I got straight on the one working phone to reception and made my feelings clear. The result? 5 minutes later the manager escorted us to the biggest suite in the hotel, apologising profusely. The suite was palatial and we had to wait until the staff had left the room to scream in delight and jump on the massive bed. Then the children told us to calm down. Seriously though, a bad start was quickly rectified and we went on to have a fab weekend. Dinner in the restaurant is always a treat, a is breakfast the next morning when the staff go out of their way to make sure the children have something they like. The Culloden is everything you expect from a 5 star and a little bit more.

Yelp
Hotel is in a lovely area and nice enough. But details like how often linens are changed and the fact that someone appears to have died on the mattress are an issue to me. Also 16£ for a continental breakfast, come on.

Yelp
Being from Bangor I have frequented the Culloden for many different occasions, mainly being functions, work dinners and weddings. As the Culloden is a large hotel with many function rooms I am always surprised at how good the service is. The food surpasses expectations, trying to stray away from the typical function dinners slopped on your plate. Every effort is made to decorate the rooms to a high standard and ensure that deals can be made to suit all party sizes and budgets. We also stayed here on the night of our wedding, having got married across the road. The hotel upgraded us to a sea view suite free of charge and left kind messages and treats for us which was a really nice touch when stumbling in at 1am. The room was really the epitome of luxury, with a giant bed, lounge and dining areas. Would have been good if we were staying another night but we jetted off on honeymoon. Don't be off put by strangers judging you piling your plate high at breakfast, the selection is too good to be polite. Haven't yet tried the spa so if anyone would like to get me vouchers I will follow up with another review...

Yelp
This place was the first hotel in NI to get a 5star rating and you can't really argue with that. It is plush, flashy, opulent and the service and setting are all top class. I'm just not that big a fan of all this kind of stuff. I prefer my hotels and the like with a bit of character and this kind of 5-star place just isn't my cup of tea. I've been here for wedding receptions and the like and never really felt quite at home. The bar prices reflect the 5-star rating and for me that puts this place out of the reach of the average punter. This is a bit of a pity because the location, grounds and setting are really lovely. Its just a pity this isn't my kind of place. But that being said, I'm sure most people won't be too disappointed with the service and experience here.

Yelp
5 star hotel with excellent health club and spa

Yelp
I stayed in the Culloden recently as an overnight treat at Easter and was left decidely underwhelmed. The room was nice, but in spite of the hotel being half empty we were given a room with a view of the carpark instead of the seaview. (I would have complained but bf was paying and didn't want to make a fuss / seem an ingrate!) We didn't eat our dinner in the restaurant (had nice fish 'n' chips in Bangor instead!) but returned in time to use the spa. This was the bit that blew my mind for all the wrong reasons. There were three staff in the place, all clearly itching to be elsewhere, and the women's changing room looked like a tornado had gone through it. I was genuinely disgusted with the mess - abandoned towels everywhere, empty glasses lying round, showers not working - most definitely not 5 star! I would have been more understanding if it had been really busy and understaffed - but the place was empty and the three staff were pleasant but not in any hurry to clear up! I would have given the hotel 2 stars, but for the lovely breakfast. We won't be going back - I've been in much nicer 4 stars!

Emma P.

Yelp
Although this isn't far from where I live we thought it would be a nice venue to head overnight to celebrate our wedding anniversary - my husband actually booked it as a surprise for me, which was lovely, and I didn't even drop any hints believe it or not! The service was excellent, we really felt we were treated very well, the room was lovely and we had dinner in the restaurant that night, and really felt very spoiled. I also treated myself to a massage in the spa which was just so so relaxing and decadent. I know we were only a few miles from home, but the Culloden Estate and grounds are so beautiful that we really felt we were a million miles away from it all.

Qype User (ploppy…)

Yelp
Wouldn't stay here don't see what the hype is about. Seriously the food is not 5 star quality. Try the Merchant now that is class!
