"Skek: Amsterdam's Affordable, Student-Run Café Skek describes itself as "loving, honest and curious." Run by and for students (get 25% off with student ID), this eco-friendly café off Amsterdam's Red Light District serves no-frills, mostly organic snacks, meals and drinks. Portions are generous on lunch/dinner menus featuring Dutch classics like bitterballen and tosties, plus burgers, soups, salads and creative entrées that are great values even if you're well past your student years. Fronted by a cozy living room and bar serving wine, beer and cocktails, Skek has no manager, maître d', five-star chef or snooty sommelier. A staff of 30 students cooks, serves and entertains, learning the restaurant business as they go. Use of seasonal products means the menu changes frequently, with new creations showcased at Tasting Evenings featuring 10–15 previews of menu additions for €15. As Skek is both restaurant and talent showcase, young musicians perform four evenings a week. Open Mics, themed parties, game nights and pub quiz challenges are regularly scheduled. On the high walls of the dining room, young artists display papier mâché cows, abstract landscapes, arty portraits and other works. Don't expect haute cuisine or five-star service at this mellow pub. What you'll get is no-fuss food served with a side of talent that may include klezmer bands or singers belting out pop/hip-hop tunes. While their performances may bowl you over, the bill won't, especially if you're a student entitled to that deep discount."
We were the first customers and we came here to have lunch. At first we thought the food was cheap when we looked at the menu but when we got our sandwiches we realized the price was expensive 🥲 Even though the sandwiches were delicious, they didn’t fill us up at all. We definitely expected more. We had to go to another place to get something extra. They definitely could’ve used more staffs. It was a Saturday and there was only 1 staff, so it took quite long for us to have our order. We’re open to come back here to try their dinner menu though. We also liked the vibe and the decoration here.

I’ve been a regular here for almost 4 years (when I’m in the Netherlands, I always stay nearby on Nieuwmarkt), and they’ve always treated me very well – I especially love their live music and the nice vibe. But tonight, when I stepped in just to buy a beer and go outside immediately, a waitress (short, with black hair and quite unfriendly) stopped me, saying bicycles weren’t allowed inside. I explained it was a unicycle (quite small), that I’d only be a moment—just to order—and would immediately rejoin everyone outside (the bar was completely empty). I offered to leave it on the landing. She refused: “Those are the rules—not even on the landing.” I ended up leaving my unicycle unsecured outside.
Three minutes after stepping out with my beer, the same waitress told me I was “too far from the bar” (I was at the sidewalk curb!). Then, about 10 minutes later (not even 00:30), she yelled at everyone: “TERRACE CLOSING! ALL DRINKS INSIDE!” When I said I thought they closed at 1:00, she snapped: “Now!” (My mistake—closing of terrace probably is at 00:30, but her manner was the issue).
Frustrated, I gulped down my beer as fast as possible, not waiting for her next command. Tonight, this bar felt more like a courthouse or police station than the alternative, LGBT-friendly space I’d always considered it to be. What a pity! 😔🫤
P.S. I've never had any problems getting in with my unicycle (which takes up less space than a folded stroller).

Great place! It is divided in two, a restaurant section and a bar section. I think the place is super cozy and the staff is sooo friendly and helpful. They are very fast and the food is great. The location is also super central and the prices are super nice! Definitely one of the places that I frequently visit!

Myself and my husband visited here after finding it in the happy cow app. We had the bread basket with houmous for the starter, then my husband had the skek burger and I had the jackfruit burger. Mine was out of this world, and my husband said the same. They have a small menu with a few vegan options, but what they have is great for bar food. The atmosphere was lovely, service was great, all round recommended.

Great vibe, great food. Did the vegetarian special and was surprised that it was full-sized versions of the three dishes—but I was hungry and the food was excellent, so no complaints here!

Skek is a place I feel like I can call home, even after the first visit... The food is great and priced reasonably. And the staff is incredible, they are so kind and they seem to have such a good time!! They make any day of the week a party!

My boyfriend and I have been here twice in our short stay in Amsterdam, each time we've been happy. Although their menu is short (varied toasted sandwiches and snacks) depending on the time of day, we really enjoyed the laidback atmosphere and relaxed staff. The prices are very fair for the portion sizes and the quality of the food. There are a few tables downstairs and a few tables outside. It seems to be student-run, and there is a 25% discount on food if you're a student.
