Czech Museum of Silver

Definitely high light of the day in Kutna Hora. Found this tour available in the afternoon and didn’t expect much, but it literally made our day. Great experience go under the silver mine, tour guide speaks very clearly. (We did the salt mine tour 4 days ago in Krakow, and this one is much better than that) Smaller group tour walking in the narrow tunnels, fun and educational experience.

Fantastic tour of a recently rediscovered mine shaft from the middle ages, the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the towns history regarding silver mining and coin making throughout the Holy Roman Empire.

probably the best museum experience in my life. we got in tour with a very sweet english-speaking lady, who very passionately answered all of our questions and showed us the mines underneath Kutna Hora. we were a small group of 3 and we had plenty of space to crawl around. the upper building of Hradek is another museum exhibition about history of Kutna Hora and its silver mines, which is also very interesting to learn. must visit if you are in this sweet town. two combined tickets cost us 540czk, which is very cheap for this kind of experience

There’s two parts to this museum, part 1 is the exhibition and part 2 is the guided tour into the mine. You can choose to just go for one of them, or both. The tour was an amazing experiencing going into a real mine. I appreciate that they are concerned of our safety and pre-warned everyone about the enclosed environment we will be in. There’s two guides in the tour, one leading us and one following us at the back to ensure our safety. There is even a small fake mine to test our claustrophobia before we go in to the real mine. In the middle of the mine, our tour guide even simulated the conditions that the miners mined in. They were very knowledgeable and shared the history of Kutna Hora, the process of mining silver and even the lives of the miners. One tip is to join the tour with lesser people, because the mine is really small and cramped. The tour group can go up to 25 people but our small group of 7 people seemed perfect. There are Czech and English tours, but they also provided a file with translated version of the tour if you require. You can also buy a plain coin from the counter and mint your own coin using a hammer.

I took the underground mine guided tour. The tour was conducted in English and despite the guides apologies about her English, I understood her just fine. The guide went in to a lot of detail about the history of mining in Kutna Hora, the equipment used and the lives of the miners. Then followed a tour down into what used to be one of the actual silver mines of Kutna Hora, back in it's heydays of mining. The safety precautions requires that we all wore hardhats with a light attached, plus overalls to protect our clothes. Personally I had a lot of fun going into the mines. The guide stops at points of interest and seeing the condition under which miners worked was very enlightening. At one point in the tour, everyone switched off their lights. In the pitch black, it made me really appreciate my office based jobs. A really enjoyable tour.

The experience of going into the silver mines and learning about this period of medieval history is truly unparalleled! While they warn of tight spaces, it wasn't as bad as I had imagined! There is no crawling and most spaces have plenty of room above your head. The 30 mins in the mine flew by. When you're done, mint your own coin like they did in the 1400s at the museum for 25 czk!

Went to the museum and participated in the "The Way of Silver"-tour. It was a really unique experience I'd never could've imagined. I really have no words to describe how amazing it was, a strong recommendation for the tour if you are going to Kutná Hora. Unless you have a fear of cramped spaces, there are quite tight spots, but that's just part of the charm. Wholehearted thanks to our amazing guides!

This doesn't feel safe at all. You've been taken through the deep mine corridors, 24 persons all at once, no first aid kits, no means of evacuation. Some parts of the route are as narrow as 40sm in width, and 120 sm in height, so think twice before deciding to go down, especially if you're prone to claustrophobic or panic attacks. Instructors doesn't stress hard enough how narrow is this place, I believe if they have showed some video footage of what it's like... Anyway, you've been warned!
