This place was horrible and for the life of me I cannot understand how it has any good ratings. We made a huge mistake in coming to this place and wasted good money on crap food and terrible service. If I could go back in time, I would wait in the long line at the restaurant across the street and not even look at Trattoria da Gemma.
First, sorry we didn't have reservations. If you don't want diners to come in with no reservations, you could just refuse them and not make a huge spectacle, TWICE, about how we had no reservations. There were plenty of people after us who also didn't have one, I hope they did, but actually hope they didn't, get the same treatment.
Second, they refused to let us sit outside, saying it would be a 15 min wait because we don't have reservations. This is fine. I understand. We'll sit inside not a problem. However, I can promise you all the the empty tables outside, save for a couple 2 tops and a big group were empty the entire time we were there.
The service is so freaking slow and uncaring. We actually watched a few groups walk out, without ordering. We should have done that.
Third, and most importantly, the food isn't good. There are some highlights, like I loved my tuna carpaccio with citrus (Il Tonno) and my best friend loved her mixed fried (La Frittura). However, the bread they served was incredibly stale, which doesn't surprise me after I saw how they store it when I went to the bathroom. If I saw this before the amuse bouche came out, I would have never eaten it (and it was tasteless anyway.) My husbands ravioli was absolutely disgusting. Grainy, wet, flavorless, overcooked slop. My friends husband ordered La Caprese, a literal caprese salad and they brought him I Paccheri, the truffle stuffed pasta dish. When we was confused and asked if that was caprese the server got really aggressive and insisted that's what he ordered. He was like no I ordered the salad caprese, he got pushback but they agreed to make him the salad but refused to take the pasta away. The man literally said, you will eat it. When it wasn't touched, BECAUSE WE NEVER ORDERED IT, the man removed my side plate and put the pasta next to me and was like someone's going to eat it. What in the actual f?
I wouldn't recommend this restaurant if they paid you to dine here and the only reason it doesn't have less stars than 2 is because the tuna and the mixed were actually ok.
