We settled on dinner at Daddy Mac’s Down Home Dive based on the recommendations of a hotel staff member during a vacation to Asheville, and it turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the entire trip. This is not your typical sports pub. The atmosphere is there, and the staff are very friendly, offering prompt and attentive service, but that’s where the similarities to other sports pubs ends, because what makes Daddy Mac’s stand above the rest is the cuisine.
Their menu creates a fusion of traditional pub food and Carolina BBQ, and spins that marriage on its head. The food was so good during our first visit that we went back the very next night, foregoing plans to another white tablecloth establishment. The wings and sauces are better than any run of the mill chicken wing joint. Large, juicy, not over or undercooked, and the Chinese Chicken and Cheerwine sauces are the standouts. The smash burger sliders are also perfectly cooked, and would stand up to any slider or smash burger out there, and amazingly might be the least good thing on the menu.
The namesake dish, mac and cheese, specifically the burnt ends mac with pimento cheese, is a must. Despite all of those highlights, and regardless of your typical pub food choices, if you eat pork, you must sample the pulled pork and gouda grilled cheese. Head and shoulders the best thing on the menu, and the thing we will order upon every visit. Yes the food is heavy, and yes the food can be greasy, but in all the best ways possible. You will leave full and happy.
