Dade Heritage Trust: Brickell Walking Tours – Tour Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Zoom out. What’s the big picture here? The Dade Heritage Trust is a large organization dedicated to the cultural preservation of Miami and it offers two tours of Brickell Avenue—North and South. Both start at the Dade Heritage Trust offices, the former home of Miami’s first physician. The walking tour encompasses Point View (the city’s first subdivision) and a good number of the mansions of the former Millionaire’s Row. The tour tells of the fortunes of the families that once inhabited these grand residences, and the events that shaped the first half of the 20th century in this part of the world. Tell us about your fellow tourees. The small group consisted mostly of local history buffs, though a few of us were from out of town and had a more generalized interest in the city. It’s not a short tour, but the pace is leisurely enough and there are multiple stops. How are the guides, then? The guide expertly brought the former glamour of the area to life—not that the backdrop is too shabby these days, but stories of the golden age of Point View (when it was an incredibly extravagant development) were delightful. Seeing Nolan House—one of the few places to have escaped replacement by condos—and hearing the story of the Nolan family, revealed a different side to the city. Delivery was engaging and our guide was nothing but charismatic. Anything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now? It's a shame that so many of the great mansions of the former Millionaires’ Row have been lost to redevelopment, but the Trust has managed to preserve several in the face of onslaught. It was moving to hear firsthand about the organization's ongoing preservation work. So: money, time—how can we make the most of both? This is a perfect tour for anyone who wants to dig a little deeper into the history of the city and what was its most affluent area. The glamour associated with Miami today has its roots here, and it’s fascinating to learn about those origins." - Paul Oswell

Super cute antique little house nestled between skyscrapers in Brickell! Very cool tiny little museum to spend a few minutes in, and they also offer walking tours and other events. 👍👍👍

Carina gave us a great tour of the Brickell walkway to the Miami Circle, along with historical, archaelogical and find facts of the area. The Dade Heritage Trust building was fascinating and informational.

Home to the Dade Heritage Trust, preservers of Miami's history, this historic 1905 cottage served as the original office of Miami's first doctor: James Jackson. Amazing that it still stands among the steel and glass hi-rises of Brickell.

I tried to call again after a few years to volunteer. No one returned my call. I do recall the woman who runs this organization was pretty rude to me

Yelp
The Dade Heritage Trust was founded in 1972. It is Miami-Dade County's largest preservation organization. According to them "Our mission is to preserve Miami-Dade County's architectural, environmental, and cultural heritage through preservation, education and advocacy efforts." They are located in the 1905 original office of the first physician of Miami, Dr. James Jackson. An interesting service they offer is helping people to purchase historic homes. They currently have a 1923 property listed in Coral Gables that is my dream home except it is missing a pool in the courtyard. Next time I win the lottery I am definitely hitting them up on that. The Dade Heritage Trust also offers programs including Brickell Walks and Talks, Urban Miami Bike Tours, and Baking in Historic Places. Everything is on hold now at least until the Fall. If you become a member you get free admission to all members only events, advance notice and registration for workshops and seminars, discounts on the walking and bicycle tours, and free admission to over 75 museums and participating institutions. The Miami Dade Trust loves all of the things I love. They have been instrumental in preserving many historic buildings in Miami. I comb through their list of most endangered sites so I can visit them in case they are lost forever. I can't wait to take some tours with them when they resume.

Yelp
They do monthly bike ride tours to teach you about the history of Miami. Check their website for details. It cost $10. It was a leisurely pace of 6 miles for two hours. They vary the route each month. There are a few parking spots at the meetup location which is the Dade Trust building.

Yelp
Gorgeous little historical house located between a concrete jungle in Downtown Miami. Nice breathe of fresh air near the water. Warm and inviting... Ahhh.

Yelp
Miami's largest historic preservation organization has been providing services to the community for many years. They were instrumental in saving a number of local historic structures, such as the Old Miami High School, the Freedom Tower and the Dorset House in original Kendale. Current efforts are focusing on the Marine Stadium on Virginia Key. They have joined up with the Friends of Marine Stadium to designate the structure locally as historically valuable, get Jimmy Buffet to record a service announcement (he had a concert here back in the days that was quite memorable for many) and helped to get this structure on the World Monument Watch list. DHT goes beyond just saving structures, the annual Dade Heritage Days help to highlight the cultural heritage of Miami Dade County and its neighbours. Miami is a young city, but there are so many culturally important, fascinating titbits and simply cool marks in the city's history. I am proud to serve on the board and would encourage anyone with an interest in Miami to join this fine group. There are so many things worth saving in our backyard!
