There are not many hotel choices in Massawa. At least the Dahlak exudes an interesting charm, you see curious remnants of Italian colonialism with Italian artwork that seems completely out of place here. The hotel lobby is has charm and the architecture is imposing. Beyond that you will have to work harder to really like this place.||||Our rooms smelled terrible, probably because the AC unit had not been running for a while. Once we cranked it to maximum strength, it didn't get cold but the odor started to dissipate. The bathroom was not inviting and a trickle of cold water made showering challenging. For one night, it was not a big deal.||||The hotel was hardly occupied but after an initial odor complaint, we were given only one other choice even though the large hotel seemed hardly booked. The food at the restaurant was decent, service was extremely slow.||||The pool was unusable. It was filthy and the water was dark and murky. We put our feet in but did not dare to go swimming.||||It is a shame that the beautiful facility is falling into decay. In its glory days, this hotel sure was grand and beautiful. The location is ideal - in walking distance to the old town of Massawa. Beautiful views onto the Red Sea. The roof top offers great views onto the ruins of the bombed out palace.
