Whirla-Whip Ice Cream – Stanley, North Dakota - Gastro Obscura

"Dakota Drug, in the tiny town of Stanley, North Dakota, is home to one of the last operational Whirla-Whips in the United States. A small company started manufacturing this retro ice cream machine—which blends sweet additives such as peanut butter or candy into existing frozen flavors—in the 1930s. The Whirla-Whip was a predecessor to the tech that would later produce popular treats such as Dairy Queen’s Blizzards, but it never quite took off. While the devices have disappeared from most soda-fountain shelves, a few remain scattered across the country. Most machines designed for making blended ice cream treats (such as McFlurries or Blizzards) rely on soft serve, but the Whirla-Whip maintains its distinction by transforming hard ice cream into soft serve, made to order. Soda jerks were meant to add mix-ins and hard ice cream to the Whirla-Whip to transform the concoction into a customized novelty for diners. Dakota Drug has used its Whirla-Whip to churn out hard ice cream blends since 1949. Originally named People’s Drug in 1911, this time capsule of a store remains a fully operational pharmacy on one side, and soda fountain on the other. Customers pick from vanilla, chocolate, or rainbow sherbet as a base, then choose from an array of mix-ins for their Whirla-Whip blend. Options include everything from the classic (think fresh fruit, peanut butter, and Oreos) to dill pickles and bacon bits. In recent years, Dakota Drug has received attention for its steadfast use of the nostalgic ice cream mixer. Visitors to the shop have event included the creator of the Whirla-Whip, who bought ice cream for his children in 1994. Apparently, they’d never tried anything made using their father’s invention before. Know Before You Go Rumor has it that the pharmacy keeps its old, nonfunctional Whirla-Whip machines in the basement and you can see them if you ask nicely. The store is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on Sunday. There is also a Whirla-Whip machine in Girard, Illinois, which starts with soft serve instead of hard ice cream." - rachelrummel

The customer service and store is great. Cashier was working hard along with the crew. Didn't realize she was the manager. SHAE OGDEN thank you for our positive experience. Chocolate shake is very good.

Worst experience I’ve had at a Dairy Queen. Hardly any vehicles in line and we waited over an hour to get 4 ice cream items. Dining room was closed so we had to use drive through. No apology for the long wait or anything! Very poor customer service attitude at the window. No hello, and u even had to ask to verify how much my order was and items in my order to ensure we got the right order.

Google needs a negative rating system . This place is wretched. Lobby is closed on a Saturday , as well as Friday at 4:45 pm . 9 Cars in drive tru, took 45 minutes to get cheeseburger. Then ! It was given to me fresh out of microwave! You can tell when bread has been heated in a microwave. It’s one of 2 choices to eat in this town , needs to be condemned .

I'd give 0 stars if i could. What is wrong with this DQ lately. Waited in line for 30 minutes to get up to the window and they say there ice cream machine is broken. Other people ahead of us were getting their orders. This has happened more than once!!! They should let people know before they order instead of waste peoples time. Get some people who know what they are doing there.

The worst drive thru in history and thats a compliment considering i live in California. The worst employees ever and the management doesn't do anything about it. The employees dont wear hairnets, they try to act hard and ghetto and they look ridiculous at it being that they're in Stanley, ND. They have no respect for the customers at all.

Terrible!! 2 times they take our order. Just had ice cream. Wait 30 minutes both times , get to window just for the gal to say, I'm sorry, our ice cream machine is broke!. Wth!!! Why do they take the order and why don't they come out and let people know . Also, both times the dining room was closed!!!

I hope this place closes down for good. I’ve been here 3 separate times hoping each time would be a little better. Each time I’ve had to wait at LEAST 30 minutes JUST to order. RUDE employees, no apologies each time.

Yelp
What a joke of an establishment. I have tried to order from here multiple times using the app since they don't answer the phone here at all. Twice I have placed an online order at exactly 9pm (they close at 10) and both times after paying on the app I arrive an they tell me they wasn't able to make my food because they close the kitchen down and turn off the cook tops at 9 and was given a voucher each time, no refund. I decided to give it one my try and placed an order for my crew at 8:10pm and showed up at 8:30 pm and they had the inside of store closed already and was forced to sit in the drive through line for 1 hour and 15 minutes waiting to get up to the window to get my order that was now cold and soggy. Never again.
