This is a special place. Please reserve early and directly with the hotel. I stayed on September 18-20 for 2 nights. I recommend staying at least 2 nights to experience the magical energy of this place. The onsen is simple but the best. The food was delicious. 2 hiking trails right near the hotel but one was closed due to high bear activity. Please arrive before dark as there is a long narrow unpaved road (about 4-5 miles). You can see the moon and the stars while in the open air bath. It was the best. Also, there is no phone signal and the Wi-Fi connection did not work while I was there - this was not an issue for me and actually made my stay even better, but if this something important to you, then please plan accordingly.

One of the best experiences I've had in Japan in the last 15 years. A remote cosy hot spring resort hotel with history (it was built in 1957 and was once visited by the Emperor) feels so much at-home thanks to its friendly staff. Food is delicious, rooms and the hot spring are clean and nice and all of this despite being 10 km away from the major road and having no mobile network. Really helps you disconnect and recharge. A nearby mountain trail is a great way to explore wild and well-protected Japanese nature in the center of Daisetsuzan National Park. I would love to come here every year!

We came here for the hike. It was really good hike. The first part of it feels like a rainforest, very thick undergrowth and a lot of climbing. After about an hour, the alpine landscape and lakes are very pretty. There are also sulphur vents here and there.
Supposed to be able to see bears some times but not such luck for me.it is a good to 4 hour hike so make sure you allocate enough time.
The drivr in is torturous. There is no road im and out so you have to take a dirt path. It will take you much longer than google allocates..

This place is really special. It does feel remote, and yet cozy and welcoming. The rotenburo is especially stunning, with spanning views over the mountains. Be prepared to drive 10 km of a rough road to get there.

Long gravel road poorly maintained but very pretty drive through native forest. If you want to experience a traditional style onsen then this is it. Has a Bear centre for important info on meeting bears while tramping.

Our second time to Taisetsu Kogen Sanso. Spacious Japanese style rooms. Excellent dinner and breakfast. Good to explore the rear of the sanso where you can see the hot spring. Excellent real onsen, indoor and outdoor !

The autumn leaves were gorgeous about a week ago! You can onsen and look out over the trees. Absolutely lovely area!
