38 Reasons Why I am Super Excited to Visit Japan

"I’m interested in exploring Daisetsuzan in Hokkaido, Japan’s largest national park (about 568,000 acres), as part of the region’s vast wilderness and national-park offerings." - Matthew Kepnes

A great way to explore this area is to go take the Asahidake Ropeway (a cable car) up and walk around some of the trails at the top. I explored this area in mid-to-late September and there were lots of wonderful autumnal colours visible.

The highlight of my Hokkaido trip! Spectacular views and nice hiking trails. We took the cable car up from Asahidake onsen, climbed mount Asahi, descended the other side and did a round trip back to the cable car upper station. The whole trip took us 8 hours. We are not experienced hikers and we stopped many times to take in the view. It was mid-July but still there was snow on the ground on the other side of mount Asahi and in the Susoaidaira region. I recommend waterproof hiking boots for the hike.

If you enjoy nature in any form you won't regret coming here. This place has a nice view and an interesting volcanic activity (brimstone geysers). If you arrive early enough there is a path from the mountain side to the parking space that takes about 3 hours.
