Daishoin

These Buddhist temples are set in a beautiful location on top of a hill, surrounded by a wooded area that makes the setting especially scenic. The walk up offers nice views and a strong sense of being immersed in nature. Throughout the grounds, there are many Buddha figures placed in different spots, adding visual interest and character to the site. A standout feature is the small cave on the premises, illuminated by lamps and candles, which creates a striking and memorable atmosphere. It’s important to note that the site is not accessible for people with disabilities, as reaching and moving around the temples involves stairs and uneven paths. Another thing to be aware of is that the area can be very crowded with tourists, especially during peak hours, which takes away from the quiet enjoyment and makes some areas feel congested. Despite the crowds, the unique setting, natural surroundings, and distinctive features make these temples worth a visit, especially if you go early or during less busy times.

This temple was really awesome. It has a little of everything and in a beautiful setting. There are a lot of stairs though so be prepared for that. One of the temples blows a bunch of mist out of the bottom that makes for a very cool picture. I wasn't expecting it so I didn't get a very good shot. There is also an underground path in one of the temples that is completely dark and you have to navigate with your hands on walls. I think it is supposed to represent rebirth or something.

Beautiful Buddhist temple, 100% worth the stairs! It is built on the mountain where you can have a great view of the town and sea. It's so great to walk around the garden, next to a clear beautiful stream. The 500 rakans with red beanies are interesting to look at. There's a temple stamp that you can collect as well. You can spend 1 to 2 hours here.

Spectacular. Must go early, be first off ferry and enjoy floating itsukushima shrine with no one around. Then walk here and again you will likely be alone. In early November this was beautiful. A bit of a hike but there was something amazing around every corner. Truly tucked into the mountain side. Took very few photos as I couldn’t stop taking it all in. No way for me to recreate this experience with a picture.

One of the best temples we visited yet! So unique due to its location up at the base of Mt. Misen. We loved all the red hat Rakan, the beautiful Henjokutsu Cave and how everything seemed to blend beautifully into nature.

We visited in mid-November and the trees were just starting to turn red. We can see that deep autumn would show a red/orange vista. We got to see the divine statutes dressed in red beanies. Make sure not to miss the Henjo Cave too.

Beautiful temple with many well kept statues. You should hit the bell (it’s a way to get rid of bad desires in Buddhism according to the guide who went with me) and also go through the dark tunnel (it’s ok, the floor is even, there’s no risk of tripping, and the corridor is rather short). There are some steps but totally doable.

Just maybe one of the most special places I’ve been so far in Japan. Get there early and go straight here before the tourists all arrive and enjoy a super serene and spiritual experience than encapsulates Buddhism. Highly recommend.

One of my favorite destinations during my trip to Japan. It is about an hour away from Hiroshima. Depending where you are staying the train or the ferry near Memorial Park will be your best bet. This hillside shrine is serene and since it is further from the port, it is not as crowded. The nearby hike to the summit is a must if you have time. Bring water and make sure you have enough time to catch your ride.

I've been to Miyajima a few times in the past but my previous visits were always short, a few hours the most, only visited Itsukushima shrine. This time I stayed on this island for 24 hours and I thought this was must visit temple on this island. I recommend spending at least two hours visiting this Buddhist temple as they offer so much to see. It is massive here and so many different things on display. I am not sure if this place is handicap accessible, be prepared to walk up and down the stairs. Good walking shoes are recommended for this visit.

About 15 mins walk from Itsukushima Shrine and the main shopping arcade, Daishoin temple is worth it! You'll be tired from all of the walking and be tempted to leave without seeing yet another temple, but if you can muster up some strength, I highly encourage going! It's free, and it holds some really unique things that I haven't seen at other temples. There are lucky prayer wheels that you can run your hands on. There are cute sculptures everywhere that you can have your own scavenger hunt looking for all of the poses. (There is also a zodiac version with all twelve sculptures holding up a zodiac animal.) There is even a "cave" with tons of lanterns hanging and sculptures filling the room. It's truly magnificent.

Quite possibly my favorite temple in Japan, certainly my favorite in western Honshu. There's nothing stellar like the big ones in Kyoto but it's really pleasant, usually deserted, and is packed with beautiful and fun sculptures. Trust me: it's worth the hike
