This was so close to being a really good hotel. We stayed in a suite, which was fantastic - spotless, with a really comfy bed, lovely understated luxury decor, and a free minibar including a couple of beers and snacks - all perfect and greatly appreciated after a really long drive to get there. We used the valet parking (faultless - parking and door staff were really friendly and welcoming) and tried a couple of cocktails in the bar - service was spot on and the drinks were great. Major plus - the room had clearly been designed by someone who likes to sleep in the dark - great blackout blinds and no glowing panels or flashing emergency lights. Bliss - by the time we switched off the lights we were ready to make this our go-to Manchester hotel.||But... now for the not so good, namely breakfast, which put a real downer on the experience. Firstly, a message to all hotels: having breakfast run till 10am on a weekend is inviting trouble. Nobody wants to get up early (we certainly didn't after an 8 hour drive the day before), so everyone waits till the last minute then crowds in at 9.45. Just extend your hours to 11am, or stagger demand by making everyone book a table like the Hotel du Vin chain. As you can imagine, service was poor, with everyone trying to grab staff to order or chase missing items (even the couple at the next table who seemed to be such regulars they knew all the staff by name) - and the menu and food quality were a real let down. Maybe we had inflated expectations because the rest of the hotel was so good? Either way, we couldn't wait to get out of there. We'd opted out of eating at the Grill the night before as the vegetarian options for my partner were really uninspiring (butternut squash soup and stodgy gnocchi), so perhaps the kitchen needs a shake up? So it lost a star. Good but not great, or great - if you accept it's best you don't go near the food.
