We had such a great family experience tide pooling near the Ocean Institute. At low tide, the rocky shoreline behind the institute turns into an incredible little adventure zone — full of tide pools, sea life, and places for kids to explore safely (with supervision, of course).
This spot is especially fun with kids because it feels educational and exciting at the same time. We saw crabs, anemones, and all kinds of shells, and it was amazing watching the kids slow down and really observe what was happening in the pools. It’s a great extension of a visit to the Ocean Institute or even a destination on its own if the tide is right.
Tips for families:
• Go only at low tide — check tide charts ahead of time
• Wear tennis shoes or water shoes (the rocks are slippery)
• Be prepared to get a little wet
• Take your time and remind kids to look, not touch
It feels like a hidden gem tucked right into the harbor and is such a memorable, hands-on nature experience. We’ll absolutely be back the next time the tides line up.
