Women Who Travel Podcast: Plunging Into Britain's Wild and Frigid Waters

"When we arrived at the coast, the sea was laid out before us. I stepped forward to peer over the ledge, and there was the pool. A speck among the limestone. ... Dancing Ledge was how I experienced my friendship with Miri, a safe space with an otherwise turbulent times."

An area of outstanding beauty and breathtaking coastal scenery. Accessibility isn't particularly easy and one must exercise extreme caution due to the steep descent and the need to scramble down rocks make it particularly challenging for families with young children. Ensure you take plenty of water and some snack.

What a beautiful place to visit! The weather made this visit so much more enjoyable! Sat here, had some lunch, relaxed and enjoyed the views. I wouldn't recommend if your hard of walking as the route down is uneven and very steep.

Beautiful spot for a bit of hiking, ending with a refreshing dip in its natural pool (if you’re brave enough 🥶). Make sure the tide is low and the conditions are safe before diving in. Bring a towel and a change of clothes if you’re planning to take the plunge. The descent can be a bit tricky, as there’s a short 5-metre rock climb involved, so it may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Highly recommended for an adventurous day out!

Used to visit here many years ago and recently revisited. Just as lovely as I remember it. Steep grassy walk down to (and back up from) the car park, or walk along the coast from Swanage. To access the pool at sea level you need to scramble down the last section of rocks, not particularly difficult if you’re reasonably fit but if you have short legs like me you’ll have to jump a short way down so be prepared. If you wish to swim you need to be there at low tide but also be aware that in rough weather it won’t be possible. Photos show the contrast between two visits, both at low tide! Respect the sea and return on a different day if it’s too rough.

We parked at the public car park in Worth Matravers behind the Sqaure and Compass pub. The walk down to the coast and then along the coast to Dancing Ledge is beautiful. Dancing Ledge itself is stunning. Beautiful views. If you want to go do a dip in the natural pool, be advised that you will need to climb down some rocks to get there. Well worth a visit and having parked near the pub you have the added bonus of a pint of IPA as a reward. Happy days!

We parked our vehicle at Spyway CarPark (National Trust) as it is the closest public parking to Dancing Ledge. This location is surprisingly remarkable. I discovered it by chance on Google Maps and was initially uncertain about its quality, but it surpassed my expectations. The location offers a stunning view and is suitable for picnics or leisurely walks. Additionally, there is a small pond where individuals were swimming and relaxing. I highly recommend visiting this location.

This is a quite interesting spot on a piece of coastline that offers few opportunities to get down to the waterline. The ledge itself is the result of human quarrying and is quite picturesque. It's only accessible on foot though, and there are no facilities, so make sure that you bring everything with you!
