Women Who Travel Podcast: Plunging Into Britain's Wild and Frigid Waters

"When we arrived at the coast, the sea was laid out before us. I stepped forward to peer over the ledge, and there was the pool. A speck among the limestone. ... Dancing Ledge was how I experienced my friendship with Miri, a safe space with an otherwise turbulent times."

An area of outstanding beauty and breathtaking coastal scenery. Accessibility isn't particularly easy and one must exercise extreme caution due to the steep descent and the need to scramble down rocks make it particularly challenging for families with young children. Ensure you take plenty of water and some snack.

An adventurous trail to the water's edge, inviting you to climb and offering beautiful views of the untouched nature. Suitable only for people without walking aids and for those who are physically active. At the end, there's the opportunity to swim under the shelter of the rocks.

What a beautiful place to visit! The weather made this visit so much more enjoyable! Sat here, had some lunch, relaxed and enjoyed the views. I wouldn't recommend if your hard of walking as the route down is uneven and very steep.

Beautiful spot for a bit of hiking, ending with a refreshing dip in its natural pool (if you’re brave enough 🥶). Make sure the tide is low and the conditions are safe before diving in. Bring a towel and a change of clothes if you’re planning to take the plunge. The descent can be a bit tricky, as there’s a short 5-metre rock climb involved, so it may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Highly recommended for an adventurous day out!

We parked our vehicle at Spyway CarPark (National Trust) as it is the closest public parking to Dancing Ledge. This location is surprisingly remarkable. I discovered it by chance on Google Maps and was initially uncertain about its quality, but it surpassed my expectations. The location offers a stunning view and is suitable for picnics or leisurely walks. Additionally, there is a small pond where individuals were swimming and relaxing. I highly recommend visiting this location.

Very dramatic coastline where long abandoned Purbeck stone quarries enhance the natural drama of the landscape. There are small caves cut into the cliff face, but these are gated off due to the unstable nature of the cliffs. The waves crashing against the cliffs and washing over the rocky platform made for a captivating atmosphere on the evening I visited. It's a good walk from National Trust Spyway parking area, with good views west along the coast to Seacombe Cliff. Stop by Spyway Barn to read more about the area. Robust steps have been installed to aid the descent. No phone signal down by the sea, so go carefully exploring the ledge because you're on your own there. Very different to the idyllic beaches at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door; it's this variety that makes the Dorset coast so interesting.
