"Taking over a wooden building on the grounds of the 14th-century Bukko-ji temple, concept store D&Department selects products based on timeless designs and long-lasting quality."
"D&Department, a youthful shop housed in a 13th-century Bukkoji temple, focuses on designer housewares, kitchen goods, and foods. Conceivedby Kenmei Nagaoka, a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design, and his students, the store sells products such assturdy tea mugs and glass tokkuri (Japanese sake sets), and highlights specialty, small-batch food producers whom they’ve met in person. The result is a special range of sesame seed oils, additive-free pickles, and heirloom misos and soys. D&Departmentwill occasionally include imported products that adhere to the founders'ethos, such asdurable Freitag bags from Switzerland, which are made from recycled truck tarps."
I visited specifically looking for a meditation/singing bowl, but didn’t feel particularly welcomed by the staff, possibly because I arrived close to their closing time.
That aside, the shop does have a nice selection of interesting and unique items, with a well-curated aesthetic. Worth a stop if you’re into design and local craftsmanship, though I wish the atmosphere had felt a bit more inviting.

A secret haven of inspiration lies within the stillness of the temple, its charm impossible to leave behind.

Always drop by this curated gift shop / concept store while in town. Got my tea for friends and my father bought a pair of ember earrings for mom. I wished i have more $$ so i can get the meditation bowl.

At first i was confuse, i couldn’t find the shop. So its inside the temple, there were sign as well.
Again, now i’ve become a d&d fan. Great place for Kyoto souvenirs. Everything here was so well curated. Authentic and local. Browsing for chopsticks throughout Kyoto for five days and finally find a preferred chopsticks here.
Wish i could carry all the glassware home. The staff was also friendly and helpful on giving recommendations.

D&Department Kyoto occupies an nice space within the temple complex and consists of a shop area and a dining area which serves a variety of sweets and simple meals.
The food is quite decent but the pricing can be a little bit costly compared to other eateries in the area.

Love the curated selection of merchandise. Every item is thought out and the location is fantastic. Left with a dashi boxed set and am looking forward to cooking with it at home
