I'd been meaning to visit this store for about 3 years, and finally got around to it yesterday.
The space: Dandelion is located in an beautiful historic building, complete with brick exterior, big front windows, and lovely knobbly wood floors that will trip you if you're not careful about where you step. This is a predominantly a combination apothecary and bookstore, and there is a large selection in both of these categories - more herbs, resins, tinctures, and essential oils than you can shake a stick at, and a variety of books on herbalism/botany, wildcrafting, beekeeping, farming/gardening, sustainable living, and so on. There are also natural skin and body care products, herbal teas, carrier oils and waxes, handmade candles, spiritual goods, a large selection of incense (yay!), some tasty raw honies (double yay!), and nice gifty items like chocolates, home decor, and whatsit boxes. Dandelion also offers classes and workshops! You can check these out on the website or ask an employee for more information.
Also, the shop smells phenomenal. That goes without saying, right?
The experience: I was greeted immediately upon entering by a serene older woman with a pleasant accent that I couldn't quite place. I was asked if there was anything in particular I was looking for (there wasn't), invited to grab someone if I had any questions, and left to quietly browse on my own. Perfect. I made probably three circuits of the store, as is my wont, poking at this and sniffing at that, and no one pestered me. However, it was clear the employees were attentive and conscientious about helping those who needed it. I ended up with a book on medicinal plants, a sampler box of southwest incense, a bottle of essential oil, and a chunk of handmade soap - all of which came to about $50.
The prices here are fairly standard - not dirt cheap, not outrageous. There are some more expensive items, as well as some incredible steals. What I really want to emphasise, however, is the prices of the raw herbs/resins and essential oils - they are VERY reasonable. My 1/2 oz bottle of organic cypress essential oil was about $7.50, which in my experience is about half what you'd pay elsewhere, either in-store or online, for the same product. From what I could see, the rest of the oils were along a similar scale, with some more expensive (frankincense, myrrh), and some less so (lemon, sweet orange), as you might expect. The vast majority of the bulk herbs and resins on offer are generally around $2-$3 per ounce (again, with some less or more expensive). Most of their raw ingredients are certified organic, wildcrafted, or grown without pesticides, which means your dollars go a long way for a high quality product.
Obviously I'm in love. If you're an herb nut, an incense lover, a tea freak, or someone who crafts your own health and beauty products, I encourage you to stop in here before you look online. The prices are great, the customer service is great, and you'll be supporting a very worthy local business.
