This bakery came highly recommended by one of my Canadian coworkers. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately, I didn't really have a good experience in here.
After passing by the shop countless times at Union Station, I was finally able to visit last Thursday morning at about 8:30 am.
There were 3 people working and maybe one or two customers in line. I was looking at all the beautiful pastries and wasn't familiar with any of them, so it was difficult to choose.
Two of the workers were behind the counter helping customers, while one was just hanging out in the middle of the shop, so I asked her what she would recommend. She didn't answer me, so I kind of wondered if she spoke English.
So then I pointed to an Aeblestang, since it sounded good, and most of them were gone, so it must be popular. There was only one giant piece left that was broken, but I didn't mind. Then she took it out and removed the sign, saying they were all out. I thought she was going to bag it for me, so I stood there waiting for a bit before I realized that she had put it in the back and wasn't going to give it to me. So confusing.
I had to ask her if I could buy it, and she said no, so then she said if I liked almond, there was an almond and cream pastry in the window at the front of the store. So I went to look at said ok, I'll take it.
But then she got distracted by someone who was standing outside the store and started joking with the staff behind the counter, COMPLETELY IGNORING ME, while I stood there waiting for her to get my pastry.
They had an entire conversation, laughing and joking while I waited. Terrible customer service. There were no other customers in the store at that time.
Then another customer walked in the store and went to the counter, and I heard them ask what pastries were good, and the guy behind the counter started explaining all the popular items.
At that point, then the girl that was supposed to help me got my pastry and bagged it.
The pastry was light and flaky and tasted fine, a bit on the airy side and not very substantial, if you like that type of pastry. But my service experience was terrible. The service in every other place I've been to in Toronto has been impeccable, so this place really stood out as a really bad one. To the point that I never want to come back here again, and I'm not going to recommend this place to anyone else anymore.
