My wife and I are members of the Surf Life Savings QLD. When we travel we support the Surf Life Savings of the location that we go, in particular during this pandemic.
We are currently in Darwin (August 2021) and went on 12 Aug 2021 to visit the Darwin Surf Life Savings . We ordered food at the Club's Cafe and were informed that we could stay with our table in front of the Darwin Surf Life Savings Club until late afternoon.
Our food arrived to our outdoor table at 2:30PM and my wife received the table. I was swinging in the Ocean that time.
Five minutes after the food arrived to our outdoor table, a female member of the Darwin Surf Life Savings Club came to my wife, using very vulgar language, and said that we had to leave the place because the Club was closed. The Club member order other employees to lock us inside the Club and started using the lawn mower around us. We were literally pushed away from the Club. We had to ask other employees to open the gates for us.
Here comes the worst part. My wife wrote to the President of the Darwin LSLC, Mr Ray Hall and explained the event and that she expected respect and reciprocity among members of Clubs. Mr Hall responded saying that:
1 - "I do not intend to take any further steps or planning to prevent this from happening again";
2- "you were provided with incorrect information from the cafe staff but as an employer of many casual staff this is understandable."
3 - "ccing our former patron and now Major and a councillor is irrelevant. DSLC owns the land we operate on via a crown lease so it is private property." Comment: isn't a Surf Life Savings Club a charitable non-profit organisations that receives all types support (including financial) from the community and government? The president was saying that the club is fully independent and private and he can do whatever he wants.
This is our unpleasant experience when visiting Darwin and its Local Surf Life Savings Club.
Good luck when going there.
Final note: we've been in Darwin for around a month(July/August 21). I walk on the beach everyday. I've never seen, during the entire time that I am in Darwin any Surf Life Savings Flag or any Life Saver patroling Casuarina Beach im front of the Club.
