Bars and Nightlife in Berlin

"A pub that was founded by a member of Scottish post-rock band Mogwai and his wife, Das Gift has become a reliable hangout for musicians, artists, expats, and locals. It has a mellow, no-frills interior, a drinks list full of Scottish ales, German brews, plus whiskey and cocktails, and some good pub grub. Check the website for upcoming exhibitions and quiz nights." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Reading the reviews here I should say that Das Gift is no longer a Scottish bar as the owners have changed just in case people were wondering. I had a really negative experience here. Booked the venue for 40ppl at roughly 22:00 for my wedding post dinner party. It was really hard to get anyone to answer on Instagram and eventually I got an answer but this behaviour continued through the whole process of booking the venue. I paid 150e for a private room on the night. When we arrived (at 22:45) the barman had no idea we were coming. The place was not privatised and the sound system only operated with an old school jack and no other cables were provided. When I reported the bad service to the owner, he said he would discuss with his partner and work on getting me the money back as he had 'dropped the ball' and forgot we were coming. Cut to a month later with no answer and no refund. I sent regular messages to follow up and finally got through. Their answer was that I would only get half the money back as I arrived at midnight so they had cancelled all their shows for that night and therefore I lost them money but yet they accepted responsibility etc. even though they had no idea we were coming and services were not rendered on their part etc. Might I add that the bar was empty when I arrived apart from a few people from my own party who had arrived earlier and we closed the bar out at 05:00 so I think we drank more than our fair share. I wanted to close this chapter so accepted the money but really disappointed at this type of behaviour as I find placing the blame on a customer when admitting fault and then not accepting the responsibility and gaslighting them into thinking it was their fault. I find them to be pleasant enough to speak to and I'm sure they're nice people but zero head for business.

It was really nice! I went there for a stand up show and laughed a lot ! I would recommend to go there for stand up show with friends but you can also go there alone (what I did). I liked the way people were there, really open! I would recommend if you want to laugh after a difficult or a tiring day 👏🏼

Google
Das Gift hosts open mic night for comedians on Wednesday's. Well worth the visit for good drinks we enjoyed the house wine and beer! There was a great line up of comedians either starting their craft or honing it to a fine laughter. Easy to get too we used the Ubahn and walked from Rathaus Neukolin.

I recently had a birthday party here and it was the best experience. The hire of a private room is very reasonably priced and they let you set up the room with decorations and you can play your own music. The staff were so friendly and helpful and we all had the best time. They also serve nice drinks. Would definitely recommend for a drink or a party!

Hello, I enjoyed my experience at the bar. The bartender gave me a great recommendation for an espresso martini. She also had her own coffee liquor and she was so sweet in her service.

Such great events and vibes and folks, unfortunately they smoke inside 🤮 but it's so much better than American tobacco stink.

Yelp
I'm staying in Neukölln for several days and found this gem of a neighborhood bar. They have 2 x 1 gin and tonic from 5-8.

Yelp
What can I say about Das Gift? It's a Scottish bar in Berlin, but not the twee type you might imagine - run by a guy from Mogwai (and others), it's more of a rock-dive-neighbourhood bar. We trekked here on a Monday night for the screening of Game of Thrones that they have weekly. We arrived right on 7pm which is when the bar opens, and the screening started pretty much a few minutes after that in a side room. We waited until the episode was done before ordering food - smoked salmon & beetroot pate to share and then the "best" mac cheese in Berlin each as a main. The food arrived all together which was fine - the smoked salmon was served as slices on thick rye bread and then some pate on the side with salad. The mac cheese was a good sized portion and nice and cheesy, just the way I like it. It had a crumble topping which I'm pretty sure was sweet which was odd - like the topping of an apple crumble? I really can't explain it and I'd only had a couple of drinks but it was weird but good. They have a good selection of drinks here - BrewDog beers so if you were a Scottish person living in Berlin it'd be nice to come here to ease your homesickness. They also have a quiz on a Monday night which starts at 9pm.

Yelp
Wow. One of the best jukeboxes I've seen anywhere. If Slint, Run the Jewels, Bowie, Big Black, or the Fall are up your alley, make a stop here. Check it out if you're into Mogwai, too. They also happen to make a great cocktail, accompanied by one of the better craft beer lists I found in Berlin. Staff managed a really busy Saturday night crowd incredibly well, and I found it to be just a hell of a fun place to hang out...we camped out for a few hours here and wanted more. Especially would have loved to check out the Scottish breakfast which sounds amazing!

Yelp
I couldn't pass up the chance to visit a Scottish bar done Berlin style! It's a small bar with a relaxed, low key sort of atmosphere. Drinks on offer include Scottish craft beers and there's a selection of whiskies. Being exports, we paid more for a BrewDog Punk IPA and a Williams Brothers Ginger Beer than we would back home. We took our drinks through to the shabby but cosy lounge. Not a hint of tartan in sight. Well actually, there could've been but it was so dimly lit, you'd never know... I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this pub, but I liked it - it's quite a chill place, with indie electronic music playing unobtrusively so you can easily have a conversation. They do food too and I was nearly tempted by the veggie haggis nachos. There's also free wifi.

Yelp
A new bar in Neukölln run by Barry Burns from Scottish band Mogwai and his wife plus Turner Art Prize nominee artist Phil Collins (no, not that bald drummer of Genesis!). So, if you need any proof that Neukölln has become the epicenter of the art world or something, come over and have a look yourself. The Gift used to be just another Eckkneipe in a shabby neighborhood and the new owners haven't changed the place too much (which means that the tree in the middle of the room is still there.) You can say what you want about what they call "gentrification" in this part of town, but in this case we ended up with a great new place concentrating on a quality choice of beer and Whiskey. They got bavarian Zirndorfer on tap, a couple of Scottish ales in bottles and plenty of spirits with interesting names for starters. Mister Burns and his mates have also installed a new soundsystem to be prepared for the occasional aftershow party and such things, making this bar an obvious hotspot on Donaustrasse. If you can get in you wont be disappointed and you will drink with interesting folks for sure.

Yelp
A very solid pub in the heart of Neukölln. The beer runs from quite cheap to middle-ground. They have a selection of Scottish ales, typical cheap German beer, as well as newer craft beer that are all the rage these days in Berlin. There is a smaller standing area in the front, and a larger sit-down area in the back, which can get quite smoky on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bar staff are competent and can even be friendly when the place isn't totally packed.

Yelp
Awesome bar with a hipster vibe that we stumbled upon in Berlin. Craft beer and good cocktails. Staff super friendly and efficient. Plenty of tables, outdoor seating until 10, smoking in the back section.

Yelp
Cosy little bar furnished in the traditional Kneipe style. This place is not trendy or hipster, despite the clientele. Their drinks menu is full of tasty cocktails and excellent craft beers, which go perfectly with a few small plates of food. Speaking of which, the food is excellent: although as a Scottish lass I might be a little bit biased. I was a bit cynical when I saw their mac & cheese billed as the "best in Berlin", but after trying a portion (with jalapenos, of course) I realised that the boast wasn't unfounded. McSweens haggis, Irn Bru, and even Buckfast are all available to cure wandering Scots of home sickness. This is my favourite bar in Berlin, hands down.

Yelp
My heart aches when I think about how great this place is. The brunch... dear Lord...makes me weep to think about all the vegetarian options here.

Yelp
Awesome bar. We celebrated a birthday here last week and from the start of making the reservation til the actual evening everything just has been perfect. The food is delicious, tasteful and very fair priced. Up until now it was the best haggis we had, never seen on any menu in scotland nachos topped with haggis. amazing. the staff were really cool and nice and helped with everything we needed. A new favorite bar of mine.

Yelp
Look, I love this bar, and just for a bar I would give it a 5 but this is specifically for their first Sunday of the month Brunch serving. We showed up at 1pm (it opens at 12) and already there's a 1 hour wait for food. This is because they have a single guy cooking all the food. I had some friends show up at 2pm and they were straight up told there was no point in ordering cause the wait was too long. I'd ordered a Scottish breakfast and was then told that I could only get one egg cause they'd run out of eggs and no mushrooms cause they'd also run out. This is 1 hour into a 1 day a month serving of English breakfasts. The staff was very rude, seemingly annoyed that anyone would be even mildly upset that you'd have to wait several hours for food wherein none of the main ingredients feature. Look I like this place a lot but they are clearly not capable of handling this kind of food service so instead of disappointing customers just rethink the concept instead of creating some sort of innate Sunday chaos once a month. And hire another chef????

Yelp

Yelp
Best bar in Berlin. Probably in Europe. The coolness of being uncool.
