🌅 Dashashwamedh Ghat & Ganga Aarti — A Once-in-a-Lifetime Spiritual Experience
My friend and I visited Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi on 12 Jan 2026 to witness the world-famous Ganga Aarti, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even though we were late due to visiting multiple temples earlier in the day, we arrived just in time for the evening aarti — but the crowd was already immense. People from all over India and the world — including tourists from Europe to Japan — had gathered to witness this sacred ritual.
Dashashwamedh Ghat is one of the oldest and most revered ghats on the River Ganges, located close to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is believed that Lord Brahma performed the Dashashwamedh Yajna (sacrifice of ten horses) here to welcome Lord Shiva, which is where the ghat gets its name and deep spiritual significance.
As the Ganga Aarti began at dusk, it was breathtaking to see row after row of priests in traditional attire performing synchronized prayers with brass lamps, incense, conch shells, and devotional chants. The atmosphere was intensely spiritual, with the sound of bells and mantras echoing across the river and the golden lamps reflecting beautifully on the water.
The ritual, which lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Ganga and expressing gratitude for her life-giving and purifying presence. The coordinated movements of the priests, the burning lamps swaying rhythmically, and the chants created a magical ambiance that was both calming and powerful.
Despite the huge crowd, the organization was good, and everyone around us — locals and tourists alike — seemed deeply absorbed in the devotional energy. Many people also take boat rides on the Ganges to watch the aarti from the river, where the view of thousands of floating lamps and lights makes the experience even more mesmerizing.
For me, watching the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat wasn’t just a cultural show — it was a spiritual moment filled with emotion, peace, and connection to centuries-old tradition. Truly unforgettable.
✨ A must-visit experience if you are in Varanasi — a place where devotion, history, and visual beauty come together in one sacred evening ritual.
