Yelp
Self-proclaimed Rum company as one of the hardest Rum distilleries in the world to get to. Daufuskie Rum is a lovely company that's extremely proud to be entirely Made in America. Easy to find on the island and one of the neatest/modern spots on the island, Daufuskie Rum Company's staff was friendly and clearly passionate about making rum - and makes some fantastic stuff.
NOTE: The building is relatively small. It's mostly made up of the gift shop/purchasing area, a tasting room, and the distillery area. While you definitely could stay around here and drink rum and enjoy the island, most of that will likely need to be done outside the building. They do have some outdoor games to play to enjoy a relaxing experience, though.
PROS:
-The owner seems genuinely passionate about making rum - and making good rum at that. While we started our tour with one of the employees, the owner and master distiller was around, and he decided to step in and finish the tour for her. He was really passionate about the company and everything he's put into the rum. He knew everything about the process, and he was great at explaining the process in simplistic manners while moving the tour along at a good speed without too much fussy details that most people won't know/care/understand.
-The owner was extremely specific in explaining what went into the rum. It wasn't too much detail, but he wasn't too vague either. He'd talk about what, specifically, went into a "Spiced" rum as well as how it went in to make it taste differently than their other rums. Did you know it's just a bunch of delicious spices that go into a finished rum and steep in it just like a tea bag?? How awesome!
-They take their claim of "Made in the USA" - entirely - quite seriously. They've been certified as Made in the USA for their product as well as everywhere they source their ingredients/supplies. Every part that goes into the Rum, including the bottle itself, is entirely USA-based.
-Quite a few various rums here. They have a rum with a bourbon flavor, one with a vanilla flavoring, one with a spiced flavoring, and one with an amazing coffee flavoring. They don't just have "basic' rum offerings - they've clearly spent quite a bit of time trying to expand their lines into a bunch of new options. It doesn't just have the "standard rum taste". Each one is noticeably unique.
-Tours are very affordable at $5 a person. That includes about 20 minutes of a tour of their facility as well as a small tasting of two of their standard rums as well as one of their specialized rums (of your choice). You then have the ability to purchase a bottle of rum to go. Plan for a total of 30 minutes of stuff.
-The rum is delicious too. Everybody in our party loved the samples and how unique they were compared to a lot of in-store mainstream bottle options. Plus, the Kona coffee rum smelled amazingly and seriously like coffee!
-The business is clearly proud of themselves and their location. Lots of branded merchandise, signage, and even a branded fire truck! It's located right next to a pond with some ducks and stuff too. It's a cute location - you're going to be surprised by how small the building is and how they still manage to make so much rum.
CONS:
-The distillery area is particularly hot - especially as we weren't here at the heat of the season. They definitely make a disclaimer that it's the case and they try to give the tour as quickly as possible to get back into the air-conditioned areas.
