I love and hate this place.
The building and the grounds are absolutely wonderful. The historic setting, the courtyards, the balconies, and of course, the neighborhood are all absolutely fantastic. Of course, one has to accept that it is a very old building, and there are some drawbacks to that, but those drawbacks are nothing compared to how beautiful the property
I also absolutely enamored all of the staff. Yanni at the front desk, Jeff, and BJ and all of the guys in the garage. Everyone went above and beyond to provide advice and assistance. BJ even walked myself in my companion over to a local bar, introduced us to the bartender, made sure we were taken care of, and then came back an hour later to make sure everything was good.
However, and this is a fairly major however, the management seems to be entirely incompetent. Let me
I booked through Expedia, and my room was advertised as a double bed deluxe. But it said that it contains two queen beds.
I was aware from other reviews of the hotel that you could have an external room, which might overlook the street and get a lot of noise, or an internal room, which might overlook a courtyard or something else and have less noise. However, my gut was an interior one, but staring at a blank wall.
So I asked if it was possible to change to another room, and Yanni was wonderful about arranging that. However, and I didn't realize this until a day later, the room had apparently not been finished up by housekeeping. There were no instructions or material about the hotel, things like hours, a map, amenities, etc. There were no bed covers, comforters, duvets, etc. on the bed. There was no chair for the writing desk. There were two towels and one washcloth.
After I mentioned that the second day, housekeeping was sent up, and housekeeping came every day, but virtually none of this was changed other than a chair was brought to me.
The room had lamps, but no overhead light, and so it was very very dim.
The television was your most basic kind of reception, a decent flatscreen TV, but with 26 channels, you could only access them by punching in the channel number. There is no channel guide, you could not go from channel to channel, you just had to find a channel you liked and remember the number and enter that every time.
The bathroom was like a basic residential bathroom, a tub with a shower curtain and a toilet and sink. On my final morning, I could not get any hot water.
They ask for a card for incidentals, which would include the valet parking at $50 a night. That seemed outrageous, but it is, the French quarter, so what do I expect.
I needed to take my truck to a dealership, so for three nights, we substituted my companions car. They couldn't seem to figure out how to handle that.
Upon my checkout, I asked for a bill, and the young lady at the desk told me that since I had paid through Expedia, there was no bill. I pointed out that they were billing me for the parking each night, and she said oh yes, we've already built that to your card. I asked for a printout, and she looked it up on her computer and said oh you owe us an extra eight dollars. She put that on the card already on file, but still did not give me a Printout.
When I looked at my credit card account later, I was actually built 275, so with the extra eight dollars, there was $33 more than I should've been charged. So I've requested a written bill from the hotel.
The on-site bar is historic and very cute, but with very limited hours.
Their material indicated a light continental breakfast, with coffee and orange juice. Only when I get there, did I find out that this continental breakfast, with various options like a English muffin, or a croissant, or a yogurt cup, was $20 plus tax. Seriously?
The external balcony over Dauphine Street, where I was positioned, was pleasant but very old and rugged. Rough concrete and rod iron rails with peeling paint. Plus, it ran all the way across the front of the building, so it was basically a shared balcony with other rooms, so a bit of a security concern.
Like I say, much of this is due to the age of the building, and I understand. But the staff generally didn't seem to know what to do or how to do it. I love the place, but I'd love to see some improving on these things.
