Beautiful café, lovely sandwiches… and surprisingly disappointing hospitality.
This was my third visit to this café.
I genuinely love the interior, the calm atmosphere, and especially the bacon–tomato sandwich.
I used to think sandwiches were an ordinary food, but yours really surprised me in the best way.
However, something else surprised me this time.
One staff member — tall, wearing a cap, with a beard — showed a level of attitude that I did not expect in Japan, especially from a café that looks so refined.
Because I spoke Japanese mixed with English, I was treated very differently from other customers:
• I was not given the monthly sandwich menu;
when I politely asked, he threw it onto the table without a word.
• My coffee was put down with visible irritation, almost slammed, and he walked away immediately.
• His attitude toward other (Japanese) customers, however, was perfectly pleasant.
If this café chooses to accept money from foreign customers, I believe basic hospitality should apply equally.
Otherwise, perhaps a small sign at the entrance saying
“Foreigners Not Welcome”
would be more honest, and certainly more efficient for everyone.
If this staff member feels a sense of pride or superiority from treating certain customers differently,
I sincerely recommend revisiting the elementary basics of courtesy.
A café can have beautiful coffee and beautiful food — but it is hospitality that truly defines it.
I hope the management reflects on this, because the place itself truly deserves better.
