I Followed Teams of Scientists on a Mission to Save Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — Here’s What I Learned

"I toured the low-rise, whitewashed resort and its Living Reef, seeing land-based coral nurseries and a 656-foot band of coral that forms a lagoon showpiece the resort commissioned in 2014; the biosphere now supports more than 100 species of fish and some 80 species of coral, and I was struck by the story of “Steve,” the very first coral planted there, which has endured cyclone, bleaching, and sediment events and now stands as a hopeful indicator of restoration progress." - Kendall Hill

Unfortunately, our stay at Daydream Island Resort was extremely disappointing. From the moment we arrived, the overall condition of the resort felt tired and poorly maintained. The rooms were unacceptable ,visibly dirty, with mould present throughout. The condition was so bad that we didn’t even feel comfortable sitting on the bed. This is not what you would expect from a resort advertised as 4-star, especially given the high price. The staff at the Tonic Bar were particularly disappointing. Their attitude was poor, they appeared miserable, and were quite rude, which made the experience even worse. That said, other staff members were very understanding and openly acknowledged the dirtiness of the rooms, which we appreciated. Due to the condition of the accommodation, we decided to leave the same day and requested a refund, as we did not feel comfortable staying even one night, let alone two. It’s truly a shame because the island itself is beautiful, but the resort as a whole feels run-down and neglected. We wouldn’t return, and we wouldn’t want anyone else to go through a similar experience

I have good and bad to say. The resort has a great concept with the brilliant activities such as snorkelling in the living reef and feeding the rays. My kids thoroughly enjoyed that. The marine biologists were lovely and full of information. Unfortunately the service in all other areas was terrible. they seemed understaffed at the restaurants. the tour desk told me its best to snorkel out on the beach at low tide but he had no idea when low tide was going to be and didn't offer to check until I asked him to find out for me (information a activities desk should know everyday including the following day), I had to chase getting our room serviced and when I called reception to ask a question they didn't even answer the phone on more than one occasion. Everything opens late in the morning and closes early for example the activities desk, souvenir shop and swim up bar. There are three restaurants but not all open all day. One serves breakfast only. The second only serves dinner and the third one serves lunch and dinner, so we to had to eat lunch at the same place three days in a row, not ideal. I hope management takes these reviews seriously because this resort could be great.

Our trip was unfortunately delayed due to heavy winds so we only spent one night. The island is cute and if all the facilities were open (closed due to dangerous weather) I could see this being a very neat holiday spot. When we checking and durning our stay we were help by very friendly staff that made the stay feel comfortable. Especially Charlotte her service was above and beyond.

Our stay at Daydream Island was extremely disappointing and not what we expected from a resort that advertises itself as family-friendly. The rooms were mouldy, smelt strongly of mould, and had ants throughout. We were also woken at 6am by leaf blowers, which is unacceptable while on holiday. Food options were very limited. The main restaurant offered the same menu for lunch and dinner, the buffet ran at limited times, and the only other restaurant was very expensive. The “kids eat free” policy was misleading and only applied at one restaurant for lunch, making dining with children restrictive. Staff communication and organisation were poor. We were given incorrect information about menus and buffet availability, including being told the buffet wasn’t on when it actually was. During a cyclone, when guests weren’t allowed outside, there were virtually no indoor activities organised including nothing suitable for children under five years old. Despite being marketed as a family destination, we felt like an inconvenience. We were a large family group and constantly dealt with incorrect or missing meal orders. Allergy catering for a toddler, which was confirmed prior to arrival, became a daily hassle with inconsistent responses. Staff were generally rude, unhelpful, and appeared unhappy, with little effort made to assist guests. Staff were not hospitality trained and lacked all values of hospitality operations. Overall, this was a waste of time and money. We will not be returning and would not recommend Daydream Island.

Defenetly Not a Four Star Hotel. 3 star at best... Stayed in a Superior King Room with Ocean and pool views which was amazing in location and views, though that's pretty much was the best in where the room goes. No complementary water in room, phone didnt work, shower leaked, no tooth paste, no tooth brush, what you expect from a 4 star hotle wasn't provided. Bed was great, nice and comfortable with good pillows, lights all worked well and easy to use not like some hotels. Breakfast wasn't what i was expecting, not all tables had salt and pepper on them, had to aks to get a table cleaned, ran out of cutlery, ran out of plates, food was something I would expect from a working camp not a hotel so it was a major disappointment in my book. And the echo was something like an public indoor pool centre Outdoor pool areas was nice, with a variety of pools for different ages. Resturants are amazing, food was so good and I think reasonable priced considering. One resturant on ground floor and second a ove that, though pre book.

Prior to arriving and reading the reviews I was a little worried what we were going into but from the moment we arrived we couldn’t fault this place. The welcoming team meeting is at the cruise terminal & giving us shell necklaces was such a sweet touch. The refreshing drinks in the arrival lounge and check in process was nice and easy . The marine biologist were all so friendly and knowledgeable both at the paid tours ( sting ray splash and guided snorkel Mya Was great ) as well as the free education session in the living reef aquarium. The kids had so much to do. The swimming pools were great. The buffet breakfast had a small selection but enough to satisfy everyone. The rooms were clean and comfortable with amazing views. Yes the rooms are a little dated and could do with a freshen up but as a family of 5 we enjoyed our stay in the Deluxe Serenity Room. We dined at Salti for all our other meals during the stay and was happy with the price and quality of the food. Chloe at the water sports was super friendly and our kids had the best day out on the water. Alana from the front desk was so helpful throughout the whole process of booking our rooms and making sure we had everything organised for our stay. Overall we were very happy with our stay. Great island for families with kids.

We stayed here 4 nights as part of an Aldi holiday package. This included flights and ferry transfers from Hamilton Island and accommodation .||When we arrived at the Island we were greeted by staff and given a shell necklace and a welcome drink at the transit lounge.||From there we went to the reception. It was about 11am and our room was not ready yet as check in is around 2pm. However we could check in and use the pools until the room was ready. The reception staff gave us pool towels and later at 1pm, we were contacted as our room was ready. ||Our room was comfortable and there were pool towels provided in the room. As we did not have a balcony to dry towels, we often used the free laundry facilities instead. ||There are lots of included activities on Daydream island, such as a reef talk every morning at 10 am (Tonic Bar deck), tennis courts, table tennis, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, rainforest walk. Stinger suits are provided. Some activities incur a fee, eg., Paint and sip at Lover's cove, glass bottom boat kayaking, kids club, sting ray feeding.||I would recommend booking off Island activities such as Whitehaven beach, via email with the resort's tour desk prior to arriving here at the resort.||There are free in-house movies and I didn't need to use the WiFi as there was normal phone and internet reception through the mobile network. ||There are limited restaurants here on the Island so make reservations for dinner in advance either at Salti or Infinity. I suggest bringing food for snacks such as lollies, crackers. chocolate, chips, as food can be expensive. I was able to take advantage of the kids dine free with one paying adult option which was excellent. For lunch I recommend buying a sandwich from the Coffee and Bean Cafe (closes at 11am) or from the convenience/ giftshop near reception.||I also placed a "Go green and receive" sign on my door to decline housekeeping one morning and this gave me a $10 credit to my room account.||The swimming pools and the kangaroos and the living reef are the highlight of my stay here at Daydream Island. It is a very idyllic paradise.
