Soo, it’s been a couple of weeks since we were at Baba’s! I’ve been testing how long I could do without lying awake at night thinking about their pastry… It’s been a hard couple of nights, let me tell you! We were in Melville for just 3 days, and yes, each one of those days you could find us breaking our brains in front of the mouthwatering display, what should we taste first? A signature feta-croissant, a chocolate-custard croissant, cookies, cakes, beloved cinnamon cruffin, all special flavour combo’s in even cooler shapes and sizes! All the dishes included are made from scratch, their types of sourdough, their kimchi, crunchy fries, ketchup, pesto, pickles, falafel, I can keep going because the place is incredible. An incredible place with awesome staff that welcomes you and takes care of you! Each time we were breaking our brains, they would help put our 2 last braincells together, thank you!! Thank you for the cosy colours, the interesting conversations, for the qualitative sweets and the warm (hungry) memories of Melville!

We had breakfast here yesterday and really enjoyed the experience! I ordered the Trout Eggs Benedict with a cappuccino – everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. The food did take a little longer than expected to arrive, but it was definitely worth the wait (just don’t go too hungry 😅). Our waitress, Nandi, was absolutely delightful – professional, warm, and she kept us updated throughout, which made the wait much easier. I also loved seeing the variety of homemade pastries, cakes, and croissants on display, and the unique Korean-inspired touches like kimchi on the menu were a nice surprise. Overall, a cozy spot with great food and excellent service. Would definitely recommend! ✨

This restaurant exudes a charming ambiance that truly captivated us. We thoroughly appreciated the intimate setting created by its limited number of tables, the inviting aroma of freshly baked goods, and the vibrant, lively colors that brighten the space. I had the pleasure of trying the Korean burger, and I must say, it was a delightful experience for my taste buds—absolutely unforgettable, a food Orgasm I say . Their pastries were equally impressive—fresh, rich, and perfectly crafted. The place tends to become quite busy, whether for takeout or dine-in, which is a testament to its popularity. However, despite the limited seating, we found that service could be a bit slow; it took about an hour to receive a cup of coffee, which was sometimes already cooling by the time it arrived.

In short, this bakery is a pastry lover's paradise. If you're looking for a special treat or simply want to indulge in some exceptional baked goods, look no further. This bakery is an absolute must-visit!

We enjoyed the drive out to Melville especially with all the Jacaranda trees in flower in springtime. De Baba Eatery is a quaint corner eatery with colourful decor. The staff are friendly and the vibe is happy. You can definitely taste the love in the food! I had the Eggs Benedict (very nice) and my hubby had the Southern Fried Chicken Burger, with devine potato chips (skin on). We tried a takeaway piece of Chocolate Sponge Cake which was rich and dark chocolaty and Carrot Cake which was delicious as it was full of nuts and the icing was extra special. Also tried the Sour Dough breadloaf which was really tasty as well.

Great place we went to for breakfast after spotting it the day before because of the colourful exterior Service was awesome, everyone was attentive and welcoming. Food and drinks arrived quickly (though we went early on a Monday morning and it was not yet busy) The food was excellent, loved the Miso Sourdough Bread with the beetroot hummus, was a lovely combination of different tastes The almond croissant was great as well, still warm from the oven and a lovely treat.

I drove from Pretoria to eat at this bakery after I saw it on Instragram, and it did not disappoint! The menu is delightful, and it was difficult to make a choice. I settled for the Korean burger, which I ate with relish as the juices ran down my elbows. As I ate, I watched some of the baking and food prep taking place - Woolies yoghurt and cream :) I walked out with a large bill after buying several bakery items to try at home with my children. Miso bread, cookies, a Korean cheese pastry, baked cheese cake, and a miso custard pastry (which did not make it home for sharing). The only disappointing thing was that when I asked for an Earl Grey tea, I was charged an extra R5 to have milk with it. This additional cost is not on the menu, and no one could explain why I had to order milk separately for black tea. I will definitely visit again, and I encourage you all to pop in and try their fresh deliciousness!

This was worth the long wait 😜 What a vibe in the middle of Melville. A must for breakfast. We recommend the Gochujang Breakfast Muffin. A real flavour explosion, rich in taste and the sour Kimchi cutting through it all. It’s probably the best breakfast we had thus far in Johannesburg. The toasted chicken-mayo and kimchi sandwich was also really good but didn’t beat the Breakfast Muffin. Coffee was very decent too and the service very friendly yet slow. We will come back next time we are in Johannesburg!
