We had a very disappointing experience at De Bakke Santos campsite and would strongly caution others before booking.
We booked and paid for 8 nights, clearly stating that we were 4 adults, 3 teenagers, and an infant. After payment, we were explicitly told that the number of campers was approved. On arrival, we were suddenly informed that we had to pay R100 extra per person, which was never disclosed upfront.
At no stage during the booking process were we informed of a maximum number of guests per campsite. Based on the approval we received, we invited 3 additional guests. After driving 4.5 hours, they were told on arrival that only one extra guest would be allowed. The only solution offered was to force us to book another campsite at a premium rate with a minimum 3-night stay, despite the campsite next to us being empty for 6 days.
The handling of this situation was unacceptable. The manager, Peter, initially acknowledged the issue but ultimately stated that we would be getting nothing beyond an apology. Lalie at the front desk was openly laughing, behaved rudely, and repeatedly told us to “refer to the terms and conditions.” Staff admitted that they do not explain rules to guests and simply assume everyone reads the fine print.
This experience reflects poor management, misleading booking practices, lack of transparency, and unprofessional customer service. Guests should not be penalised for information that was never communicated.
We will not return to De Bakke Santos and do not recommend this campsite to families or groups expecting clear communication and fair treatment.
