de Young Museum Store

Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of the store to offer here, since I had already used them in my review of the museum. Instead, you can see the wooden San Francisco skyline I purchased a year ago, which they are still selling to this day. It features the Salesforce Tower, Transamerica Pyramid, 181 Fremont, Golden Gate Bridge, Russ Building, Ferry Building, Coit Tower, City Hall, DeYoung Museum, and Legion of Honor Museum, and can be rearranged to your liking. It was about $20-30 from what I can remember. It’s well crafted and I enjoyed the assembly process, but a lot of the pieces tend to come loose from the base. Nevertheless, it’s high quality, like most gifts from the museum store. I think there were about 3 or 4 sections of the deYoung that sold souvenirs. Some products are original, some are by artists, and some are general art-related trinkets. The only problem was that everything seemed overpriced, but that’s how museum prices are, right? Overall, 4/5.

Good thing that I didn’t have time to browse through the shop, otherwise I would very likely buy many things here.

We browsed the items and they are really pricey. My sister bought one item, the least expensive 😉

The store had some interesting offerings, but they didn't have magnets for Rameses exhibit! This is a separate store from the special exhibit store, and they do have different offerings. Very nice staff at the main museum store. Ask about a membership, because it might save you some money on purchases and future tickets.

surprisingly good value for a museum store - it might be worth joining just for the member discount and the occasional extra deals. check out the unique to america line of watches for women. if you want a little gift for under 100 you will find things that look like they should be much more expensive.

Nice museum Saw "Botticelli to Braque" collection which included works of many famous artists (although just one Botticelli painting while I was hoping to see more), and permanent exhibits covers creations from all over the world. Closes early on a weekend (5 pm is still a mid-day for an active tourist), but turned out 1.25 hrs. for special exhibit and most halls is enough (unless you do an audio tour or read every description). Excellent store within the museum. Love their books which coincide with the rotating general exhibitions. They also have great cards and calendars. Staff working at the store are always kind and helpful.

Nice museum store with two floors and a large selection of items. On this visit they also had a special store open at the exit of the Ansel Adams display.

I love museums and I also love museum shops. My dad was annoyed that my mom, my brother, and I were spending so much time down here in the store, but it was glorious. There's multiple levels of books, art, gifts, jewelry, posters, sculptures, puzzles, clothes, and more. It's laid out nicely and staff is *very* helpful. How, you may ask? They helped me with sales! Merchandise here is pricey but they have some good sales. I got unique statement jewelry for more than 50% off and for some reason, with that purchase, got to take home two free coffee table books. Those were not cheap! They weren't publicizing that anywhere, it was just something we were told at the cash register with our main items. Need a gift? Come here. There's some great San Francisco and California items here and of course some timely items relating to exhibits too. There's something for everyone, of all ages!

The de Young Museum Store is a fun stop for unique gifts, art-inspired books, and quirky souvenirs. I found high-quality prints, jewelry, and home decor that reflect the museum's collections. It's a good place to pick up a memorable keepsake after exploring the museum.

It's a decent store..It's not going to be the SFMOMA store..they present marketable merchandise for the ongoing current exhibitions..art books with the exhibit(tradition) pricey $60-70...sell posters and postcards...there are other gifts for kids and interesting items..I got some things from the Ansel Adams exhibit last year..this year I got postcards from Irving Penn and Tamara de Lempicki...also Hokusai at Legion of Honor museum gift shop..this is a basic museum gift shop..the frills at SFMOMA to get interesting unique cool items..I like browsing gift shops at the museum..it feels good and homey..always a nice presentation... I stopped in here a little while back with my mom when she was in town. I forgot what a gem this store is. I appreciate that they are continually rotating their merchandise and that they feature an array of gifts - ranging from lovely home goods, collectible art books, beautiful jewelry, stylish scarves, charming tea products - and much more. On a beautiful or rainy day - it's nice to know that you can pop in here (you don't need to pay for museum admission to check out the store) and explore the array of thoughtful wares and finds within this spacious store (make sure to check out both levels). Many of the products aren't cheap - but the selection is well curated, many of them quality, and it's nice to have a wide range of items to choose from - if you're looking for a special gift for a friend or family member. Trust.

A really great museum store! It has two-storeys of art-inspired gifts. Lots of books, homeware, clothing, accessories, postcards, posters, games and other beautiful things! There are a few nooks in the Museum that sell a small selection of goods -- but make sure you go to this main store to see a FULL selection of items! Price is comparable to other museum gift shops in the city. All the staff were very friendly and check-out was smooth.

IMHO It's nice. Beautifully merchandised. Pricey. It was a diversion while the rest of my group took in the Ramses Virtual Reality Experience.

They didn't have any Rothko gifts, but other than this, the store was okay. The employees are really nice! Expensive, though.

I love their store. So many unique gifts. We just saw the Ramses exhibit and I bought the KinTut exhibition kit. I uncovered Annubis the god of the dead. $8 minus membership discount, money well spent. I get something cool each times. Matted prints, unique cell phone holder, earrings, whale hard boiled egg slicer, and so much more. Very competitive prices, you're supporting the museum with your purchases.

SPECIALIZED BOOKS Even though I was an art history major in college I'm not collector or aficionado of art history books. However when I go to the de Young Museum for a specific exhibition I like to go to the store to see if there are any books I can be interested in with respects to the exhibition I saw. Last May I saw the Late Monet Exhibition. At the end of the exhibition there was a specific section-like store that was selling Late Monet memorabilia. There were items like postcards, puzzles, and books. There was a couple of books focusing on certain periods of Monet. However one book stood out - a cookbook. It focused how food influenced Monet's art. The cookbook revealed Monet's own recipes. So I decided to get it. The books at the store show insights about certain artists and artistic periods. These books aren't academically influenced that they're used at universities or colleges. These books are easy to read for those who have a general interest in art. This store isn't overwhelmed with an abundance of art books. Being the books here are pricey you can sift through certain books that you are interested in buying.

After the tour of the Monet and Gauguin exhibitions, my husband and I stopped in the gift store to browse and shop. Well, hubby did not stay too long, so he waited for me in the lobby. Thank goodness he did not tell me to hurry up and buy. Then I did not ask him to hold my bag. We're not the Bundys. (LOL) Most of the merchandise were memorabilias of Monet and Gauguin (tee shirts, post cards, stationary notes and envelopes, calendar, coasters, etc.) I usually like to buy a magnet from different museums for my refrigerator. Unfortunately, I did not see any magnets. Perhaps I was not looking in the right place. However, I did purchase a set of coasters and a set of stationary notes/envelopes. Even though the cashier/employee was pleasant and helpful, I wasn't feeling the wow factor compared to other museum stores that I have been to (Asian Art Museum, OMCA, Crocker Art Museum). Another visit with more time on hand might help me get a better feel to up the rating to 4 stars.

The store has nice gifts for art lovers. There are home decor items, accessories, books and gifts for the art intellectual. Father's Day is Sunday! I stopped by and noticed several "Dad" items that would be great Father's Day gifts! There was a chic sweatshirt (or two) for those days of unpredictable weather with a cool SF landscape silhouette or museum verbage. How about a tie with geometric patterns. If your man is not good with time, get him a desk clock in a Arts & Crafts style. The shop itself has a picture with looking out of the building with the ferris wheel perfectly framed! Downstairs the shop is chockfull of books. Options, options... Stop by and check it out.

The Museum store, also purchased a few items there and Libby the cashier was amazing. She convinced us a membership would be amazing, so my dad did sign up. Libby was so helpful and friendly. She helped me locate an Anubis I wanted, made in and sent from Cairo Egypt. Also purchased a coffee mug of Rameses.

Great range of glass work and sculpture Lp to abstract art. A very enjoyable time spent here walking through all the galleries and seeing the observation deck.

Not gonna lie I'm a museum store junkie. I always visit the stores while I'm at the museum because you don't know what kind of tchotchkes you'll find. Spanning two floors, the de Young is the biggest museum store I've ever seen. If you want sales items, they are located on their basement floor. I picked up a Tiffany book (last copy. A floor copy) for $30. Any $30 purchase received two summer of love coasters. I assume these were unloved products that they can't even give away - hahahha. Store is neatly arranged. It's like a separate visit themselves. Staff was nice.

I visited de Young Museum for the Frida Kahlo exhibition. My friend had mentioned about their COVID guidelines and safety. I decided to go with my fiancé as a date. The Frida Kahlo exhibition and the OPEN exhibition (Bay Area artists) was amazing. Seeing Frida in different light and having her personal items there was very amazing...breathtaking. Unfortunately, people at the museum did not understand 6 feet distancing. de Young Museum might have limited individuals coming in, but it was still crowded with individuals. A lot of people kept coming up behind me and not respecting the 6ft distancing. I even went on a weekday to avoid a lot of crowd. I will say that the employees are helpful and knowledgable. They did have hand sanitizer in the entrance, but nowhere else in the museum.

Not sure why the low rating for the de Young museum store. I know we all have different expectations based on our preferences and previous experiences but in my opinion there are several stores located throughout the museum, all of which offer an extremely wide variety of souvenirs from inexpensive to moderately expensive. My most recent visit while seeing the Summer of Love exhibit was a tiny toy giraffe for my dogs made by a company that sells real craft pieces made by women in Uganda. You can also buy prints, frames or unframed for reasonable prices ranging from $15-$140, majority pieces from exhibits past and present. Pros: Wide selection of souvenirs, modern and clean layout. Cons: None Bottom line: Great store to round out your museum visit with.

The de Young Museum is pretty dead. I think largely it is outdated. Selling overpriced merchandise that nobody cares for. Time I am writing this review, the exhibit of "Ed Hardy" (the clothier) was/is in high swing. The exhibit documents the art of Ed Hardy -tattoo inspired clothing line. FYI de Young, Ed Hardy clothing is no longer in vogue. So is tattoo as clothing. This just tells me museum curators are out of touch with reality. They have no idea what is the here and now. They tend to focus on the death stars. Old dead, or irrelevant artists.

Many museum stores have only very expensive stuff and seem especially targeted to the kids that are being dragged here by their parents. And don't get me wrong, the de Young store does have some of that. But they also have reasonably priced magnets and post cards that make it a deal. There are a couple of these in the Museum, including one on the 9th floor observation deck. They seemed to all have mostly the same stuff though.

Museum is beautiful. Ed Hardy exhibit was great. We had a docent led tour which was very informative. The gift shop has a lot of wonderful things. The cafeteria food was delicious.

The place to go. I love the exhibit that they have. I come here way too much. It is in th heart of Golden Gate Park. Suggestion: Come here Friday Night. It is a party here or come during free day.

Gayle would tell you that the first place I go to at a new Museum is shop, and then I take in the Exhibits. Maybe it's because places like the de Young Museum Store are a good place to buy special gifts that you can't find anywhere else. The multi-level shop has lots of interesting things and this time around I really enjoyed the separate Georgia O'Keeffe offerings. The Service was A-OK.

Terrible customer service and rude incompetent sales staff. Merchandise is expensive and poorly made, which is OK because it supports a good cause, but the sales staff are just plain rude.

The store seems to be staffed with imbecile drones that are at once feeling heady with the possibility of being involved with an art venue, and rude because they finally get to be marginally in charge of something ... anything! My wife and I went to the recent Picasso exhibition with some friends. After enjoying the exhibit, I stopped into the store to buy a small print of one of Picasso's works for my son. I chose a small, cellophane wrapped print, held it up a bit and was going to photograph it with my phone to send to my son at work. Simple, right? While most of us are aware that photographing the pieces of artwork in the museum exhibition is a no-no (I say most, because on each of our last 3 trips to this venue someone actually tried), it seems that the idiots in the museum store are the only ones that know that you can't take a picture of a miniature print, while buying the print, IN THE S-T-O-R-E!! I did not suffer this stupidity easily, but in the end I declined to make a bigger scene and went outside the store and did my dirty little business. In fact, the numbskull told me that NO photographs were allowed of ANYthing in the museum store (see the pics this page). I promptly expressed to her my heartfelt feeling that she was FOS, and told her to simply go away. But as it is with flies, so it was with this attendant in the museum store. Seriously, the problems associated with camera flashes and older (read much older), fragile works of art should be guarded against, as well as whatever form of piracy that copying leads to, but to include in this a (cellophane wrapped, mind you) print that one is buying in the museum store falls just short of embarassingly stupid. Love the print, though.

Bought a CITY PASS so that we wouldn't have to wait. Walked into the museum and there was no expedited line for city pass or any pass holders. A modern museum that runs like an old barge. Who would have thought. Also, $22 for students? Are you kidding me?

I love it here. They have such funky things. We didn't go inside, although we should have. It was still a nice hour to spend in the store. We love the earthquake fault as you walk inside.....have you noticed that? It is an interesting reminder of SF Bay Area.

I love the De Young especially the Paris Impressionist ongoing collection. Plus is that you can get into the Legion of Honor for "free" if you go to both on the same day. Cons Special exhibits can be expensive and not a fan of the Friday Nights. At least the night we went it appeared to be family night. Cute kids dancing and making crafts...darling but really not my idea of a Friday Night out. We quickly left...

de Young Museum Store - 3 Stars: typical little museum store tucked in at the end of a museum run. Nothing special and nothing negative. Pretty expensive but a nice place to pick up a souvenir or two to bring home as gifts..

What prices! Terrible service and costly markups. I hate how museums have turned into money-making schemes. It costs a fortune to go in, costs a fortune to shop. How are the lower class supposed to partake in knowledge and our shared human history? To hell with them! Come see a mockery of human history with King Tut! $100 bucks, please! Want a King Tut coffee mug? $50 bucks, please! King Tut t-shirts! Step right up! Step right up!

Like it's partner museum, the Legion of Honor, this museum store does not disappoint. It essentially has everything you're looking for -- souvenirs, to more practical items, to replicas of what you saw in the museum. Certainly worth a browse.

This review is for the store and only for the store. Good variety of items that you'd be hard pressed to find somewhere else, but be prepared to shell out serious cash.

HORRIBLE customer service. When the woman I spoke with made a mistake in my order, she tried to blame me for the error. It seems once someone gets a job there, they can treat people however they want. Otherwise, our museum experience was pleasant.

Most the stuff here is just misc stuff that you could get anywhere. It's sort of hit or miss here. Sometimes if your lucky you might find something unique.
