How to Plan a Solo Trip to Whidbey Island, Washington

"I stopped at a parking lot that overlooked a shallow bay and followed trail markers across a pebbled beach, climbed a steep cliff hugged by Douglas firs, and clambered over rocky outcroppings until I found a clearing where harbor seals darted below; farther offshore a lone elephant seal fished and an otter bobbed on its back with a crab. Rivulets streamed down my rain gear as I stood on a promontory, blissfully alone and feeling small in the dramatic, foggy, rainy landscape." - Sara B. Franklin Sara B. Franklin Sara B. Perfect Picnic Spot with Stunning Views🏖️ Visited Deception Pass State Park yesterday and had such a lovely time! We brought along some tea and enjoyed a peaceful picnic on a bench right in front of the beach the view was absolutely breathtaking. After that, we went for a walk and took in the scenic beauty all around. The fresh air, water views, and surrounding greenery made it such a refreshing experience. It was also wonderful to spend time here with family and our dog, it’s a very pet-friendly spot. The park is well-maintained and perfect for a relaxing day trip. Highly recommend visiting for anyone looking to enjoy nature, have a picnic, or just slow down and take in some beautiful views.

West beach sunset and sunrise walks are the best. The jets flying in that area could be noisy. Goose trail is pretty nice to exercise and enjoy ocean view. Lighthouse is another good spot.

This is truly one of the best parks in Washington—perfect for both day trips and overnight camping. The area near the bridge is especially breathtaking, offering the chance to spot seals and, with a bit of luck, even whales. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the abundance of hiking trails, stunning vistas, and picture-perfect spots throughout the park. Each corner offers a unique experience: the southwest side, in particular, stands out for its calm waters, quieter atmosphere, and peaceful surroundings. Whether you're seeking adventure, wildlife sightings, or a tranquil escape, this park delivers. Highly recommended.

The campground at Deception Pass State Park is beautiful. There are so many big trees and lots of vegetation between campsites. Miles of trails are within the park to explore. Note that jets from the nearby Naval facility do fly overhead. West Beach is salt water and very popular. Cranberry lake just adjacent is fresh. Swimming is popular in the lake as well. Check out the nearby sand dunes interpretive trail as well. Beautiful forest has grown there.

The camp grounds are very well kept. The atmosphere is awesome, the other campers are all nice and welcoming. Also the staff is top notch they clean the restrooms twice a day! Only cons were the fighter jets making passes all day, and we camped during the burn ban so we couldnt light a fire (not the campgrounds fault). Other than that we had a great time

This is a beautiful 100+ year old park. Not bad to get around in by car or on foot. There is still much more to see for me. Only seen maybe 2/3 of it in my two visits. This visit was only a night and about 6 hours. Got some beautiful pics on both visits. The park was packed this time, 4th of July weekend and the steel bridge is very popular scenic view. I will return.

The first I drove over this bridge I was in love!! The views and beauty of the area. This time we parked and walked the bridge and then did the stairs to do the other side!! Wow, a great workout and beautiful pictures!!

Absolutely stunning! The view from the bridge is breathtaking. Recommend going not on a holiday weekend, but even when it's busy, it's worth it! You need a discover pass to park, only $10 for the day or $35 for the year.
