12 Fun Things To Do in Austin with Kids

"If you’re read anything about Austin, you’ve likely heard of Barton Springs, a swimming pool fed by natural springs and flanked by green lawns, where tatted-up sunbathers often go topless. What gets less attention is Deep Eddy, Barton Springs’ sister pool. While it’s also spring-fed (and not chlorinated), Deep Eddy looks more like a traditional concrete pool, one with bright-blue waters, swimming lanes, and—unlike Barton Springs—a large walk-in shallow end that's ideal for families. It’s all about swimming, with a side of people watching. In summer, Deep Eddy hosts regular family movie nights, so you can float while you watch the screen." - Stirling Kelso

This is an amazing pool with organized swim lanes. The water is clean and fresh - making it one of the healthiest options in the city for organized swimming. There's an interesting and rich history to the land, pool and bathhouse. Parking can be a little crazy but for me it's worth it.

Google
Natural fresh water, bathrooms and change rooms. Fee is $5 or $9 for residents/ non residents. Be aware of algae/ mold and not crystal water depending on how many people there. Parking is pain as always in Texas.

Carissa Arty

Google
This was one of the coolest things I did in Austin, by recommendation of a local. If you're not into the live bottom or algae of Barton Springs this is fed by the same water but is filtered and is a regular pool!

Jordan Fincher

Google
Great city pool with parking. There is a lap pool as well as a zero entry area which is great for babies/toddlers. This spring fed pool has a lot of shade trees around to sit under.

Jordan Schmidt

Google
Lovely public swimming pool with cool spring water. They refill the pool every few days so the water clarity can vary slightly. Plenty of shaded areas to sit. Definitely recommend to both locals and visitors. Parking can be difficult so you may need to park on nearby Veteran’s Drive and walk. There is also free public parking at the corner of Veteran’s Dr and Atlanta St but be sure to lock your car and take your valuables.

Google
Such a gift to have spring water spots like this in the heart of Austin. $5 for residents. Cash is always quicker than buying on the machines. Wish Deep Eddy was on the ATXswims app - would be better flow when it’s peak busy! If you leave you can come back with a hand stamp or your saved ticket. Parking is generally tight unless you go early morning style. I love biking there on the town lake trail; it’s a fun ride and always VIP parking. Lotsa babies and tots since there’s the wading/shallow portion. No food or drink allowed by the water but you can eat upstairs where you come in. They have a snack window to buy munchies too. Stairs to get to pool but they do have an ADA friendly / families-carrying-strollers kinda entrance - just ask about it if you don’t see it. Good for families for sure and great people watching. Wholesome.

Deep Eddy Pool is such a gem. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, it’s the perfect spot to take a swim and unwind. I love how peaceful and beautiful it feels, and the 65-degree water is such a cool treat, especially on a hot day. It’s also one of my favorite places to just hang out. You can bring a book, relax by the pool, and dip in whenever you need to cool off. It has a laid-back, old-school charm that makes it feel timeless. Great for solo chill days or laid-back hangouts with friends. A total Austin classic. Be sure to bring a towel and sunscreen!

Google
Absolutely horrific experience at Deep Eddy this evening! The water in both the shallow and swim lanes sections was utterly filthy. I have been a frequent patron here for over 20 years and never have I seen it this bad. We asked for a refund due to it feeling unsafe to swim in….a thick film all over the surface, tons of debris, a foul odor, signs of mold, etc. I am not squeamish as I again swim here often but even after sharing that I have an autoimmune disease which makes extensive bacteria dangerous…NO REFUND. The manager actually said “we can’t” which actually means we won’t and we don’t care. He could not have cared less which was the worst part. We even asked if we could get a stamp or pass so we could go over to Barton instead. Nope. Didn’t even try to offer any consolation. The other employee at the front desk even argued that the pool was clean because it had been emptied out last night. Unbelievable as it was again utterly filthy….not just a little bit. And, her lack of concern was also not appreciated. This place is just not what it used to be in many regards. So sad as it had always been my happy place. Tonight, I left there in tears feeling so disregarded. Not to mention we drove round trip an hour to pay $10 and go back home.

Yelp
Was all set to go to Barton Springs today (Thursday) only to realize it's closed on Thursdays! So, Deep Eddy pool to the rescue! I've not been to any of Austin's swimming holes or public pools and after reading some reviews online I was a bit skeptical for what I'd encounter at Deep Eddy but I was pleasantly surprised! The parking lot is definitely NOT big and I can see how on a weekend it would be a nightmare for parking but at 10am on a Thursday, I was able to find a spot in the lot with no issue. Kiosks at the end of the parking lot are NOT for parking (I thought they were) but rather for tickets to enter the pool. You have to use the kiosks if you're using card, $5 for adult residents (you can pay with cash at the entry but must have exact change). The pool itself was clear and blue (not what I expected after reading reviews) and there is a specific area for lane swimming/laps. Lifeguards are stationed around the pool which is great. The only issue I had was with seating/lounging. There definitely aren't many options but there are spots on the small "hill" to lay out a sheet or towel. Shade and sun were open when I went. Overall, I thought this was a great pool option if you're looking for one! I can absolutely understand how parking could be a nightmare but if you go early on a weekday, enjoy without issue!

Yelp
Deep eddy is a great public pool alternative to Barton Springs. Pretty expansive pool that is great for kids and plenty of seating. Unlike Barton, Deep Eddy has a slope from 0 to 4 ft. of water on one end and lap pool / 8ft deep end on the other side. Went on a Sunday morning around 11:00 and really wasn't crowded at all. Plenty of places to lay out in the sun or shade. The filters didn't seem to be working a whole lot as there was a lot of debris and bits in the water, but it was not bad. Very clean on the lap pool side. A great summer activity!

Yelp
Great pool, friendly vibes and pool burger down the street had amazing food. Pool is also ice cold which was amazing on a hit day.

Yelp
I saw a few tik toks regarding how great Deel Eddy pool was so I had to check it out for myself. This is the oldest pool in the state of Texas which makes this another cool attraction too. When we arrived parking was a bit of a challenge but after a few rounds of driving around we found a spot. After parking we went to the kiosk to purchase our tickets. They were checked at the entrance and we were allowed in. There is a long stairway down to the pool area. At the end of the steps we found a shaded place to put our stuff under a tree. There's lots of space at this pool for your family to relax. Fair warning, this water is cool but you do adjust pretty quickly. The water was also very clean as well. Overall, I lived Deep Eddy Pool and most definitely will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
really fun place, lots of room to lay a towel down and relax also! If you're below a certain age and come without a parent, you have to do a quick swim test in front of a lifeguard but it's simple and pretty easy. The only thing I didn't like about Deep Eddy Pool is that if you get snacks/food or anything at the concession stand, you have to get enough to pay at least $5 or $7 of food or something like that, so you can't just get one thing. However, Deep Eddy Pool is a really fun place and I totally recommend going with some friends this summer!
google avatar

Phuong P.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE! I love it so much I come here every 2 weeks in summer. Nothing beat the heat like this water, and surely it beats Barton Springs to me. Much cleaner, more organized and less crowded. Parking is free on weekend, might be limited but you can check out the Veterans street, there is a shortcut to get to the pool too. Ticket is only $5. Everytime I go there, I go out so much happier.
google avatar

Layla P.

Yelp
I want to love this place but I've gone several times and it's just not great. It feels filthy, like you are swimming in pee. There are a couple of lifeguards that are incredibly rude and aggressive. The grass has stickers in it. The food policy is ridiculous. People slip and fall all the time and the slick walkways. I honestly think they are trying to make it terrible and unfriendly so it's not too crowded, but yet it still is.
google avatar

Lexy D.

Yelp
Brought my nephew here to bake in the Texas heat. The water was very refreshing. Natural spring water and huge pool. Half of the pool you can do laps whereas the other half is shallow with a zero entry section. It was free entry the day we went which made it even sweeter! Would bring multiple towels or a blanket to lay on the dead grass and a large sun hat next time. Also never have seen so many people sun tan with their body spread out like a starfish! Do you need to tan your goodies? Lol
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
Great outdoor, year-round pool that is similar to Barton Springs in that they don't use chlorine to disinfect it. The pool is cleaned every month and then drained periodically to keep it fresh! This place really starts hopping during the summer when the shallow side is open, but is equally nice during the off season for lap swimming only. Makes for a great run and swim combo being so close the town lake trail (parts of which pass right by the pool)!
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
I went swimming here with some of my buddies and it SWAM past my expectations. Picture this, you are not an avid swimmer but the lifeguards are very nice and help you become a better swimmer and encourage you and give you their best. That is what happened to me.
google avatar

Anita E.

Yelp
The deep eddy pool is a fun place to get really really cold on a really hot summer day. Don't bring sugar drinks or snacks because the ants will try to eat it plus, they don't allow it except upstairs. Take a look at the murals at the far end of the pool it's amazing. I love the tiny details that are in that mural, if you want a way to cool down and by the way, parking is very hard to come by if you're interested in getting a parking space close to the entrance you might have to do alseveral circles around the parking lot
google avatar

Kevin Lenning ..

Yelp
Another great Austin spot to swim on a hot day. I rode my bike out here and the cool water was just what I needed.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
More for laps than leisure (at least for adults). I appreciate that it's free and therefore accessible to everyone. I did see people with snacks so they might be a little more lenient when it comes to bringing in food/beverages than Barton Springs. Very family friendly! Be sure to check their website for days of the week/hours they're open.
google avatar

Maddie M.

Yelp
Perfect spot for a quick dip to cool off in the Texas heat (water is fresh and cold) or to hang out for a longer period. Lots of space at either end of the pool to set up and lounge the day away. The only downside is you can't bring food or any sort of drink down to the pool area.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
The water is just cold enough to chill you to the bone and just green enough to make you feel like an otter. Great spot but don't come too often because I want to be able to have my own lane!
google avatar

Bita S.

Yelp
Very dirty water, no circulation of water. It would be nice for kids if it had a clean water.
google avatar

Tam T.

Yelp
The movie nights here with the kiddos are so memorable. Cool spring fed water does a nice job of cutting the heat on those summer days. If you want to do something outdoors in the summer and not die of heat exhaustion, this is it! Kids will love it!
google avatar

Christian J.

Yelp
If you live in West Austin this is definitely the place for you. This nice little hidden gem is refreshing considering how overcrowded Barton pool has become. It's a nice neighborhood crowd and the water is fresh and cool. Very clean and the staff is alert to help watch after any kids that might go astray. Parking is pretty easy and most of the time it's not as busy as you would think. The location is perfect and I even took the kids there with my mother who is elderly and she also had a great time.
google avatar

Yelp
Apparently there is a "zero tolerance policy" on food and drinks in the pool area. How do I know this? Not because it's posted ANYWHERE at the facility. But because when my wife was feeding goldfish crackers to my 3 yo and 18 mo, the manager told us that we would have to leave. We were told if we did not leave they would call the police. We explained we were sorry, we didn't realize there was a rule against food and drink, and that we would not feed our children anymore. He said because of the policy he had no choice but to force us to leave. I asked him to speak to the manager, to which he said "I am the manager." I asked who his direct report was. He said the Austin Aquatic Division was his direct report. I asked him how many times a day does he find himself forcibly removing people from the pool over this, and he said "A lot more than I'd like". I told him they need to inform people of this policy and that the person collecting every person's ticket needs to verbally let every person with a bag know they will be kicked out with no warning if they fall foul of the rule. He said "They're supposed to do that." I told him we were not told that, and he said "Well then if they don't then they can get written up." I replied, "So they get written up, but we just get kicked out even though they failed to tell us.." He said "Yep." I don't have an issue with a rule against food/drink at a pool. But to forcibly remove a family of four over goldfish is beyond absurd. No one is forcing this d-bag to kick out families. He could uphold the food/drink rule by telling people if they don't throw away or get rid of their food then they would have to leave. He's choosing to be an a$s because he has nothing better to do. We watched multiple people drinking their alcohol out of Yeti mugs and not get reprimanded. The easiest target in enforcing your asinine "policy" [that I still have yet to see corroborated anywhere online] is a family giving snacks to their child. Absolutely pathetic excuse for a human. Go swim anywhere but here.
google avatar

Xiao Z.

Yelp
Monday evening at 7pm, not many people, face mask required at entry. The water is cold at first but once you're used to it it's totally an enjoyment! Plus, it's free!
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
Love this pool. Great way to get a workout and enjoy Austin Sun afterwards. Swimmers are polite and share lanes well. Only complaint is people bringing in food. Staff needs to monitor and enforce the rules. Others due two thumbs up.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
Deep Eddy is a beautiful pool for a good workout. It's 33 1/3 yards long, which makes for a nice challenge when swimming laps. I got there when it opened at 8am to claim a lane away from the hardcore former olympian-looking swimmers. Each lane had about 2-3 people sharing the lane. The aquifer water isn't chlorinated, and it was really cold. Admission is currently free, and there was plenty of parking in the early morning on a Thursday.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
This place was a treat! After trying unsuccessfully to go to overcrowded Barton (their computer system was down and no one could take our money at the back gate), we were greeted by a super nice young lady at Deep Eddy. She informed us that the pool was free of charge! Wow! The pool was just as cold as Barton Springs and was easier to enter (no rocks in the shallow end). Everyone was pretty chill there- just like the water!
google avatar

Angie A.

Yelp
Love this when you need a break from Barton springs! Definitely a local favorite. Here's some tips- parking is limited, you can buy a ticket at the electronic kiosk or at the gate, bring cash if possible. There's deep Eddy salon and pool burger within walking distance for drinks and beers. There's also trees for shade if needed. There's two parts to the pool- a deep side with lanes and a shallow side that's wide open. Worth checking out if your in austin on a hot day!
google avatar

Jim's I.

Yelp
Nice open-air lap pool with at least 8 lanes. Seems that it is a natural spring so water was cool but ok for a workout, even in mid-January. People using the pool were pleasant and considerate, asked about sharing lanes, waited, etc. Price was right too - it was free! Had a small open-air locker room and hot shower. What more can you ask for?

Anjaly P.

Yelp
The pool was very green and murky with algae and leaves all over. Seems like the pool is not filtered very well. Would not recommend.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Had a great time at the actual pool but when I left to go home I found that my car was burglarized even though I had parked right in their public parking lot (overflow side) in broad daylight next to the park ranger station. The Park Ranger said they see it happen all the time cars getting burglarized in the parking lot. I wish I would have known. I would have just taken an Uber. :(
google avatar

Yelp
FIVE DOLLAR ENTRY FEE. People post that it is free. It is not. Need to add more words to reach minimum. Thanks.

Marlene A.

Yelp
First time coming to the pool took my daughter and family here for the very first time I lived in Austin my whole life. I've never in counter someone so Racist. The old man that takes payment in the front was not very nice. He is very rude and seems like he don't like his job. I stated that my mom did not know English and I was there to let him know she will be paying for her self and her granddaughters. He ignores me and acted like he did not understand .He had a bad attitude with us the entire time. Do not recommend you to go here I though we had left racism's behind. The pool is a fair size food is not aloud !!!
google avatar

K E.

Yelp
The shallow pool is closed. The deep end is open for recreational swim at noon. None of this info is posted on their website. Call before you visit.
google avatar

Rosalinda L.

Yelp
I love Austin Tx !! And when we are in town I enjoy stopping by Deep Eddy's!! The fresh water on a hot sunny day is simply amazing !! I totally recommend ! They also have clean dressing rooms & showers !!
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Really neat natural pool with swim lanes, lifeguards and a grassy knoll fed by the Colorado river. Clean and safe. Nice view of the river and hillside. Free, sizable parking lot. They only take cash at the entrance but if you have a card their are ticket machines in the parking lot you can use.

Angel H.

Yelp
filthy pool i mean i never complain about ANYTHING it was bad got a UTI sadly would not return
google avatar

Marci C.

Yelp
Wow! How lucky Austinites are to have such a lovely place to swim daily in beautiful earth filled cold filtered water. The pool is painted light blu, so it looks as good as is feels:) The deepest part is around 8 ft then comes to a slope where it gets more shallow. About 12 lanes were available today always free of charge, I love that!!!! The steps up and down could be challenging for some? Plenty of grass to sunbathe, read, snooze, meditate, or just be thankful for life!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Deep Eddy is a nice spring water pool similar to Barton Creek. But instead of having an ambience of outside nature similar to Barton Creek, Deep Eddy is located near the heart of our fair city Austin. The water is cold. As expected of natural spring water. The pool is pretty damn huge too, so you shouldn't have a problem accidentally bumping onto kids if you decide to swim back and forth outside the lap lane. Parking is atrocious. So is the fee to enter. If you want a free pool, come to the North. Or at least cheaper entry fees. Deep Eddy mostly has a bunch of kids. The last time I came to Deep Eddy was for some kid's birthday party.

Cecilia C.

Yelp
This is a great pool to take your family and hang out for the day. The water was nice and cool for a hot summer day. Parking if course is always a challenge. It would've been better if we could take drinks and snacks inside. Pool burgers was a good alternative.
google avatar

Kimberly F.

Yelp
Great history at Deep Eddy. And I love the imperfections of this pool. So refreshing on a hot summer day. There are always parking challenges but it's well worth it. I forgive any mishaps. Deep Eddy Pool is part of Austin history that has managed to hang on, despite Austin's evolution. Deep Eddy Pool is part of what makes Austin special. Love, love, love
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
Great spot for swimming. Clear cold spring water, no chlorine. It's a beautiful pool w/ lots of mature pecan trees around it. They've got a great shallow end with zero depth entry for kids & folks just wanting to cool off. However it's closed due to Covid-19. The lap pool remains open. Check the days & hours on the website to see when they're open
google avatar

Nikki Q.

Yelp
Been going to deep eddy for years, but I'm crossing my fingers that it will stay a semi-hidden gem as an iconic Austinie stuff for Austin residents. Travelers please go to Barton Springs, and stop reading here. Ok for Austin residents: This place is awesome for those who like things to be orderly. They have lap lanes, kiddo pool, and 8 feet adult pool hangout area. No drinks, no food in the pool area to keep this place clean and no fire ants. They used to have some stickers, but that got improved over the years. Now I can go bare foot on the grassy area. The crowd is smaller, the pool is organized and clean. You will see people hanging out, and serious swimmers to swim, families with kids having fun all in groups and specific area. It's very peaceful and fun. No diving board. No splash, people can actually read a bold The water is super cold. It's awesome to jump in the water in a super super hot day in Texas. It is well water and clean. They also have movie night which is fun. If you find parking bad, please don't come, so you are making parking easier for me. The parking is bad. To be fair, they have overflow parking lot, and you can park by the lake and walk over. Damn, did I just share my secret parking spot? Ok the parking is bad. Please don't come. There is a $5 entrance fee accepted in case. There is a machine from outside that you can pay by credit card to get ticket. I'm considering buying a seasonal pass. There are weekends, all I have on my mind is to get a tan and cool off at Deed eddy on both Saturday and Sunday. Please don't turn deep eddy into Barton springs. Pleas stay awesome as the way you are. Don't allow food and give 5 minutes break to ward off the people who throw trash food, and get surgery water all over the place. I love deep eddy!!!
google avatar

R R.

Yelp
Fun fun!!! Had an amazing time at the pools. Looking forward to doing it again! It's very beautiful too.
google avatar

Alek Z.

Yelp
One of the best and more popular swimming holes in Austin, behind Barton Springs. Deep Eddy was free to get in the day we went, although I think it's usually a few bucks. There's plenty of shade, plenty of places to get some sun, and the water was just right. One of the best places to beat the heat on a hot summer day.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Currently the kiddie pool is closed for the season. However the lap pool is still lifeguarded during the day, and entry is free. It was a bit cold when I first got in the water, but the facilities are good, and there was plenty of space for all the swimmers. Solar heated showers help you warm up after. There is a family restroom, but otherwise they're still divided into male and female facilities. In the summer expect to pay to get in and have a much bigger crowd. They do evening movie showings where you can sit in the kiddie pool and watch a film. Occasionally there is a food stand with things on offer as well, but it's been so long since I came to a summer movie, so I can't speak to the exact brand of food. There is quite a bit of parking, but expect it to be more challenging in the summer.

Sonja S.

Yelp
Love how accessible and inexpensive this pool is! The new admission kiosks and app work great!!
google avatar

Luci H.

Yelp
Deep Eddy is a spring-fed pool that combines the best of both worlds. It's a natural pool with crisp, cold water and has a structure of an Olympic-style pool. It's a bit easier to swim in than it's sister, Barton Springs, so you'll find a lot more kids and families here. Parking is challenging, but if you can find a spot, it's a quick jaunt inside. They have card readers now, so it's no longer cash only. The ticketing booths are outside in the parking lot. Once you have your ticket, you can walk into the front desk and then they'll let you into the pool. The seating here is hard, because of ants. You're better off bringing a float and chilling in the water the entire time. They have a concession booth and a food-friendly area where you can grab a snack and overlook the scenery. I'd recommend getting to the pool early, because there were still cars circling at 5PM when we left, they are always busy in the summer.
google avatar

Ru L.

Yelp
It's an old and historic swimming pool, dating back to last century that takes in underground spring water. It's not the prettiest pool in town, nor is a fancy one, but on a hot and sweltering day the cold spring water makes it an oasis in a humid desert. It's huge, separated by a wall with one side for lap swimming and the other for just horsing around. It's deep on the other side of the wall (lap swimming) and the water is much colder, too. Life guards are always on duty and they have separate outdoor bath showers for M/F. No worries, the showers are enclosed so there's no peeking going on!
google avatar

Hugo L.

Yelp
Beautiful city pool filled with aquifer water, cool and refreshing similar to The Atlantic ocean/beach water on a warm summer day, sans Sharks and seals; many lap swimmers beat the Austin heat in the ~33yard length lap pool; supposedly open year round; just wish more hotels close by; East/West 6th street is pedestrian friendly to help access this pool from downtown Austin hotels

Sylvia R.

Yelp
Nice open pool with zero level entry in one side and lap lanes on the other. Great place to take kids or people who might not be strong swimmers. We went on a weekday and it wasn't crowded at all. At some point it felt like the filters didn't seem like they were working. There was a lot of hair, bugs, and sunscreen film at the surface of the pool.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
Visited Deep Eddy for the first time yesterday. I am embarrassed that I had lived in Austin for 10+ years and never been here before. It's gorgeous! Entry is only $3 for adults and free for babies under 1. My baby loved the pool - the wade in entrance is perfect for little ones! The cool water was incredibly refreshing this hot summer. We went on a Thursday morning and it wasn't too too crowded. It does seem like parking could be a problem during peak hours. There are lanes marked off for lap swimmers and the shallow end is very kid friendly. Something for everyone!
google avatar

Suzy F.

Yelp
This is an iconic Austin location and I wasn't sure what to expect, but my overall opinion was...meh... Pros - The $3 entrance fee for residence was fine. - The pool was pretty clean. Cons - There were so many sticker burrs! Come on... Get that outta there. It hurts and is possibly dangerous. - I don't understand the five minute breaks? Please explain. - I understand no food because of ants, but there's so much more opportunity if it were allowed. - Too many silly rules like no water guns.... Why? - Parking was the WORST Will I be back? Nah
