Deer Mountain Inn Review: A “Hidden Gem” Inn in Upstate New York Still Exists — Read Our Editor’s Review

"Deer Mountain Inn is a luxury lodge located in Tannersville, New York, owned by the Royce family. The inn features a rich history dating back to the 1880s and includes six rooms in the main lodge and four stand-alone cabins added recently. The interior design by Iliana Moore incorporates Craftsman-style antique furnishings and William Morris textiles. The on-site restaurant, led by Chef Corwin Kave, offers sophisticated cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. The inn provides various amenities such as hiking trails, a spacious deck, fire pits, gardens, and a third-floor sitting room, making it an ideal year-round escape." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"But it's not just food that's been elevated. Catskills lodgings are now as tastefully luxe as they are cozy, rustic, and wooden-bear-adorned. Plus they're stocked with the same fancy soaps as that boutique hotel in L.A. you're dying to try. Book a room at the Deer Mountain Inn for capital-L lodge vibes. The inn's top floor is part game room, part honor-system bar, which feels like the cool attic of the rich grandparents you never had."

We are from Texas. My new son-in-law is from upstate NY. We decided if we were going to have a midsummer wedding the Catskills would be a much better option than Texas. From the moment we looked at Deer Mountain Inn the decision was made. We bought out the Inn and it was just wonderful to have our close friends and family around the entire weekend. The accommodations and Inn itself is so warm and inviting. We had a tasting a month before the wedding and the culinary and beverage staff hit it out of the park. The menu we planned was prepared and served exactly to our liking at the reception. The ceremony was on the mountain top and was truly magical. The reception was a tented lawn reception and was perfection. The entire staff were kind, smart and incredibly attentive to all our guests. Maureen and Charlotte, our event planners, went over and above to make the weekend magnificent and flawless. I have never worked with such a fun but extremely professional group of people. If you want a perfectly planned and executed wedding Deer Mountain Inn is the place to have it!

Really enjoyable stay here in one of the artist cabins last weekend. We could only stay 1 night on a quick stopover in town but we almost canceled work and stayed a second night. Very peaceful, very clean, and luxury touches. Great stock of add-on selections in the bars at the inn and inside the cabins - local products, alcohol choices, curated to-go wines. The Inn for dinner is great with knowledgable staff and generous portions. Breakfast is simple but very delicious and a good selection of warm and cold options. As much as I like animals, we aren't a huge fan of being around dogs in public eating spaces or common living spaces, so I almost hesitated booking here for that reason, but thankfully it was very well controlled during our short stay. There were a few dogs at dinner but they were on the patio leashed and did not intrude on our enjoyment of the hotel. We would (and probably will) return!

Very special dinner experience for my bf and I before we left upstate. Peaceful atmosphere, nice staff. Our waiter Stephen was amazing, he is very polite, paying attention with details and serve us with perfect timing. The sourdough is the best sourdough we’ve ever had. I miss it so much! Wine and cocktails are very refreshing. Stephen gave us recommendations which fit what we want perfectly. The fish is delicious and the sesame ice cream is a must have too! We definitely will come back again.

Google
This review is for the restaurant. We had the most exceptional dinner experience. Fantastic food, excellent wine selection, and the most fantastic service. The property is beautiful with stunning views, coziness, and comfort. The wagyu steak and smoked chicken were exceptional.

Google
The building, atmosphere, service, view, food and drink - everything is top tier. Our server started us with complimentary champagne when we mentioned it was our anniversary. The sourdough focaccia is out of this world. Possibly the best bread I've ever eaten. The burger and trout were phenomenal. 10/10.

Google
Tgis place came highly recommended to me and they still managed to go beyond my expectations. Everything was just right. The food matched the vibe and intentions of the space. The service was delightful and all staff members that i interacted with was not just hospitable but genuinely enjoyable to interact with.

We visit this part of upstate New York often, as we have a home nearby, and decided to celebrate my mother’s birthday at this restaurant. While the setting is lovely and the food itself was good, the overall experience was a little bit disappointing From the start, the reservation process was overly complicated. Despite being one party, they refused to seat us at the same table unless we paid an additional $2,000 — which felt completely unreasonable and out of touch. It gave the impression that the place is more about enforcing rigid rules and upcharging guests than actually providing a warm, welcoming service. We brought two cakes for the celebration and specifically asked the staff to refrigerate them. Unfortunately, they didn’t, and when the time came to serve dessert, they brought out warm cakes, which ruined their texture and taste — an incredibly frustrating oversight, especially for a special occasion. While our waiter tried his best and was pleasant, this restaurant feels like it’s more focused on maintaining its “exclusive” image than actually delivering high-quality, thoughtful service. I wouldn’t trust them to organize or host any kind of event in the future. For a place that charges this much, I expected a lot more care and hospitality.

Google
Every aspect of staying at Deer Mountain Inn is great. It would get a 5 star review simply for the location, rooms, and amenities, but the service is bar none. Truly felt so taken care of everywhere we went and it’s because of their attention to detail and wanting to be nice. This was the perfect cozy “clear your head” getaway. If you go to the restaurant, have the sourdough and also the ice cream sundae.

Yelp
Deer Mountain Inn was unique place to visit. The moment you arrive, warm greeting with welcome cookie and cheese makes you to feel special. The inn was cozy, woodsy ski lodge vibe. Our room was very comfortable. We loved wandering the trails around the property. Staffs were exceptional and consistently going above and beyond to make sure we enjoy our statz Dinner was truly a highlight. The chicken, salad, steak and cocktails were one of the best ive had in Westchester area. The foods were sourced locally, everything was fresh and delicious. This Inn is dog friendly. Our dog had so much fun walking the trails around the property.

Yelp
Special place run by special people with special chefs cooking up special food. Seriously one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. It's definitely pricey but at least the food, drinks, and service back it up. I wasn't even going to leave a review because I don't want this place to be too crowded but I have to give them the props they deserve. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Dear Deer Mountain Inn, you are so cozy and you fulfilled my winter dream. Loved your owl trinkets and my cocktail in an owl mug. Your cheeseboard was delicious. Your chocolate chip cookies at the front desk were delicious. See you next year.

Yelp
Everything about this place was amazing! Great people, Service and yummy food. Our cabin was so dreamy. Fabulous experience

Yelp
Not sure how this place has high reviews unless we're just very spoiled living in the city. The food was just OK. The seafood was fried even though it didn't say it was fried. The caviar was just salmon roe. And the wagyu was not wagyu.

Yelp
What a hidden gem. Cozy, warm, speakeasy-ish. Staff is incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. Innovative cocktail program and delicious food. Can't wait to come back in the fall and experience the grounds, but even on a rainy night in February, it was the perfect place to cozy up on a worn leather sofa by the wood burning fireplace with a deck of cards.

Yelp
Well I have to say this is a find. Greg and I believe her name was Kate were awesome and welcoming. The staff was brilliant. The atmosphere will blow you away. We got a drink and walked the grounds. You have to do this. After we sat on a little private bench and just took it all in. So the interior is amazing but the grounds rival it. Don't Forget the food. It was all delicious and worth going. I will be back with guests. I can't wait to do it again. The trout was amazing

Yelp
The old world cabin aesthetic and decor was delightful. Before we entered there was a quaint fire burning out front that we took a second to warm our hands by. There didn't seem to be a bad seat in the restaurant. Drink selection was grand. I had a robust local brown ale perfect for the winter, my wife had a 2014 Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley. We started with the cheese plate that were all local and wonderful. I had the half chicken as a main course that was impressive, it was kind of half barbecue half Italian seasoning. My wife had the pasta dish that was good but lacked the flavor pizazz that we were expecting. Overall an incredible experience. Couldn't recommend it more.

Yelp
Cozy, warm. Welcoming. Friendly and delicious!! Our waiter was wonderful. The food was amazing....and we stayed well past dinner enjoying the ambience, drinks and atmosphere. While we didn't stay here this time, we will next time. It's everything you want for a weekend in the mountains. Charming!!

Yelp
Service , cocktails, good food. Beautiful setting, lovely walk through gardens. Breathing Mnt. Views and sunsets. Private, romantic, peaceful.

Yelp
Deer Mountain Inn impressed my squad of women warriors with delicious cocktails, yummy food, and stellar service. Special thanks to Manager Jonny Humble and his team, including Caio (sp?) who made this evening extra special. If you love good food and beverages and the ambience of a turn of two centuries inn, I encourage you to plan a visit for dinner or a weekend stay. The inn is beautiful, and the grounds are sublime!

Yelp
Had an incredible stay at Deer Mountain Inn. The space is decorated so well--staying true to the style of a rustic, old school mountain lodge with elevated touches to make it feel subtly modern. The rooms are similarly cozy, and the communal spaces like the attic and sitting areas are welcoming and inviting. I also the good fortune to eat dinner at the Inn. Came down to the bar 40 minutes before the reservation for cocktails, which were all delicious. Food was all very fresh and tasty--loved that they included the list of farms from where the food was sourced on the back of the menu. The housemade focaccia was some of the best I've ever had; the braised pork shoulder with brussells fell apart and was perfectly autumnal; and the smoked chicken was cooked perfectly with lemon thyme fingerlings. Could not recommend this spot more.

Yelp
Incredible restaurant! Came here with a group of 9 and every single dish was incredible. The setting is amazing... truly feels like you are in a mountain inn... the service was great too. Can't wait to come back.. should be a destination spot. I had the burger which was probably the best burger I ever had

Yelp
We booked this place for a bachelorette party of 6. They gave us a table towards the back patio. The entire inside is gorgeous and the vibe of the place was immaculate. The drinks were the best part of the whole dinner. Everything we ordered from the bar was delicious and really strong. The service was okay. Our waiter, Bart, was really nice and attentive. Although for some reason when we kept ordering drinks, he would walk away to put the order in before the whole table spoke to him so for the future I'd recommend to have one person give all the orders at once. The dinner was unfortunately not our favorite part of the experience but still fine. We got a few cheese boards for the table with salad and bread which was delicious. However, a few of us ordered the steak which came with a really strong anchovy butter. The anchovy butter was not printed on the menu so it came as such a surprise and for those of us who ordered it, we collectively hate anchovies making the steak inedible. Further, the chicken was a bit cold and the pork shoulder was quite small for the price of the plate. That being said, when we spoke to the manager about the mishap and showed him that the menu did not list the steak as having anchovy butter, they comped the steak from our bill. They also gave our brides free dessert! We have to compliment the manager and staff for listening to our concerns and being so kind about it. In terms of whether we'd recommend the place, I think it would be great for drinks and if you happen to like what's on their limited menu, then great for dinner and dessert. I would definitely come here again for the drinks and service but would probably get dinner somewhere else.

Yelp
Outstanding food and service at the restaurant. (Just went for dinner, so no review of the hotel.) It is such a beautiful, cozy and romantic dining room. The cocktails are out of this world.

Yelp
One of the best meals of my life. Every dish was amazing and unique. The service was excellent and the ambiance was perfect. It's a small menu that appears to change pretty often but you can tell that they focus on perfecting each dish. I would come back again from NYC just for this restaurant.

Yelp
Ambiance gets a five no doubt. We found the menu limiting and the food disappointing. The size of their 'pour' for drinks is meager to say the least. When buying wine by the glass beware you are paying full price for 4 oz size! Also, I do so wish someone would teach these young waitresses and waiters how to politely pause before interrupting the conversation and not burst up to the table and demand your attention.

Yelp
La tropikitchen was en experience i took great pride in as a Latino. Seeing our culture take another huge step in the culinary aspect is so heartwarming and makes me excited to see what will come in the future for Estefania. Luckily we were able to catch La Tropikitchen before they finished their pop up, we drove 2 hours from queens just to try this delicious cuisine and it was completely worth it. My biggest recommendation is go have the chicharrón, Estefania's technique to cook the pork is unlike any other chicharrón I've ever had in queens, mind you northern boulevard is like the Mecca of Colombian food but they are in trouble when the Brooklyn location opens because her food is unlike anything I've ever had before, authentic Colombian with a sexy twist. It's almost poetry, it is poetry. Flavors far beyond the realm of possibilities. Estefania is a fearless chef and i look forward to her success, attached are some of the delicious pictures unfortunately i did not get a picture of the most tender delicious tamarind panela ribs but i know I'll be seeing her again! Thanks for an amazing experience we all loved it!!

Yelp
Probably the best on the "mountain", had our anniversary dinner there on a Thursday night, the food was outstanding. The details, lovely ambiance and a nice vibe, not too noisy, you still can have a conversation, a very well curated wine list by the glass with a sommelier who is more than willing to share his thoughts and make recommendations, great service and timing for the plates to come out of the kitchen. We had thebeets with bacon, the crab salad, lamb shoulder and smoked chicken, now this may all sound pedestrian but far from it, great flavors and textures and juxtapositions of tastes. This was our first visit since the pandemic started and I know we will be back soon.

Yelp
We stayed overnight in the wheeler room. The place is beautiful, the room was gorgeous and comfortable. Logan, who was at the front desk, was exceptional. Kind, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. He made us feel right at home. The bed was extremely cozy and comfortable. The linens were so nice and I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud. There was an espresso coffee station set up in the hallway next to our room which was super convenient-and the coffee was delicious. Also, our room was stocked with liquors, snacks, and other beverages that you could add to your tab. We had the most delicious local chocolate bar! Dinner was a different story. I had REALLY high expectations after reading the reviews, but unfortunately-everything fell short. The dining room is stunning!! The service was impeccable. The cocktails were delicious, but tasted much different than what we'd ordered. We'd ordered an apple pie cocktail-and what we received was a very orange forward bourbon cocktail-with not a hint of walnut or apples. It was delicious though-just not what was described. The focaccia came to our table totally blackened. I understand a bit of char can taste nice and add some character to a rustic bread-but it was really burned. Each piece was bitter, because of the excessive char. My celery soup was not bad, but it was not delicious. It lacked balance. It was sour, and could have used some salt, or fat to round out or balance the flavor. I was not impressed with it, and felt it really could have been elevated. My trout was very nice-red rice came on the side in a bowl and was served cool/room temp. The trout was supposed to have a "sunflower curry" sauce-and the sauce was nice, but it didn't seem to have any type of spicing that would indicate a curry. It was a white sauce with a very mild flavor. The fish was delicate and mild in flavor, but I did have a couple of bites that tasted very fishy. My boyfriend played it safe with a burger which he enjoyed. His fries were over salted. We both love salt-so it would have to be pretty salty for either of us to find them salty. The dessert was delicious, but it was TINY. I don't mind having a dessert that leaves you wanting more-but the portion was ridiculously small. The brown butter cookie was to die for. The whip was nice and light. There was just not enough of it. Our experience was still a pleasant one. We were not blown away by the food, but the restaurant was so beautiful, and service was very pleasant. Our breakfast the following morning was nicer than I'd expected. Croissants, nice bagels with some flavored cream cheeses. Yogurts with various toppings and honey. Fresh coffee and juice were available as well. A nice ending to our stay.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by a local for a romantic dinner during a weekend trip back in January (pre-COVID). We're very glad we followed her recommendation! Beautiful spot with great ambiance & food!

Yelp
Let's break this down: Ambiance gets a 5. Food gets a 3. Service gets a 1. Been coming here for years, since I was a kid. Wait staff was always extremely professional and well informed about their offerings. Since change of ownership, seems like quality has taken a hit. For upscale restaurant, relationship with server is important and need to feel confident they'll point you in right direction. We were waited on by at least 3 different people and main server struggled to give basic description of entrees and desserts. I didn't feel confident in her recommendations. This place was ripe for new ownership and a rebrand to meet the growing demand for trendy upscale restaurants in the Catskills. But unfortunately, they missed the mark here. With a hipster takeover, often comes the sacrifice of quality over the desire to curate an aesthetic and attempts to radically challenge tradition which tends to emphasize trendy over classic. The old Deer Mountain Inn was cool and upscale without even trying. The new owners seem like they're trying a little too hard. I'll still continue to come here since it's undoubtedly the coolest and most authentic setting for a restaurant on the mountaintop. However, I hope the food and service can match that same authenticity the Deer Mountain Inn has long been known for.

Yelp
The Arts and Crafts style of the DMI (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=RFGvc8tYQ-SN_9q0FP10Ew) has always been attuned to the extraordinary natural beauty of the Mountaintop, but now the food and drinks are extraordinary too. Attended another special family event here on Memorial Day weekend. This installment was the best by far -- the new owners and staff finally have the formula right -- 5 stars worth. The manager (Brian) and his uber cool mixologist (Darren) made all feel at home in an instant. Hospitality oozed -- and Darren is spectacularly skilled at lining up fine tastings of spirits and mixed drinks. (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=BCVRW9ZOjgK91XngujUAsQ) His signature lavender gin gimlet was killer. (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=BZuDt8CrL7vjOhJcqbAL3Q) The dated polish/austrian style party menu has yielded to a more contemporary American take on traditional favorites. Classic roasted beet salad (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=MbfYnpmgvPbcaPem9mkJFg) was amped up with aged manchego, meyer lemon dressing and toasted almonds. It looked beautiful and was the perfect starter -- tart, salty, earthy and sweet with enough texture to get all the taste buds roaring. The brook trout and roast chicken mains showcased the chef's skill with searing and roasting, and his choice of accompaniments rounded out flavors successfully. For instance, the crispy skinned trout (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=Fn5gacqRDlGBQ6gzpcIsqg) was served over a farotto that was toothsome, creamy and rich with mushroom flavor, served alongside a fragrant bagna cauda that augmented the richness, but also played as a nice up tempo condiment to the fish and roasted root vegetables. This symphony of flavors and textures was my favorite. A perfectly seared/roasted chicken breast (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=tncezAOQquH5ywST_wApyw) was paired with chard and a mild foie gras/truffle veloute -- which added complexity and depth of flavor to a crisped but relatively bland piece of chicken. Roasted pecans and mushrooms provided a textural interest and a woodsy finish. My only quibble was with dessert -- a flourless chocolate torte (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/deer-mountain-inn-tannersville?select=Um80w4DWWOl9elkEgFCRlw). More ganache than torte, it bogged down in a sticky marshmallow base and a salted caramel ice cream -- none of which ate well together. I got a sense that s'mores inspired the dessert, but texture (and a campfire) were missing. I have never taken advantage of the lodging here because we live nearby -- but from what I have seen and heard over many years -- that too is a treat! Don't miss the Deer Mountain Inn when visiting the Mountaintop. It is a refined experience in a historically laid back place that will satisfy even the most discriminating palate and aesthetic.

Yelp
We just had dinner at the Deer Mountain Inn and were very pleased. While the menu is limited we all found a delicious entree to eat. Menus are seasonal and eclectic ( no burgers or steak on the menu ). Our appetizer of smoked eggplant dip was excellent. My steelhead trout was delicious as were my dining partners entrees of smoked half chicken and lamb shoulder. Sauces and accompaniments blended very well with our protein. Dessert was delicious. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable . We were alli pressed that the GM visited our table to serve dessert and say hello. We hope to be able to come back soon.

Yelp
If their COVID-19 game is this strong, I would love to see them when operating normally. We ordered takeout in advance, and when we arrived, the friendly hostess asked if we were staying. (They have tables set up all over the stunning grounds so you can eat outdoors with considerable distance.) I said yes and she got us real silverware. While I was getting food, my husband found a lovely table on the patio, and the bartender set him up with our wine in an ice bucket and glasses. The food was delicious. We got burrata with strawberries, shaved veggies, farro with mushrooms, potato salad and the butterscotch pudding. I would tell you what was my favorite if I could pick. Including a bottle of wine, our bill was under $100 before tip. I thought that was reasonable for what this place is. We were tended to all night by friendly, attentive servers, while we looked out over the tree-filled grounds, with multiple fires twinkling as the stars came out. So we ate our food out of to go containers? Who cares? That just made it easier to take our leftovers with.

Yelp
We came up for our anniversary, my wife's family has a house near by so we didn't stay at the inn (although after this experience maybe I will book a room for the next special occasion anyway!). Upon approaching I was struck by the beautiful building set on park-like grounds. Being a special occasion I had made a reservation for the 7 course chef table tasting menu, they feature a small regular menu also but I believe they don't take reservations for the regular menu. The interior is that of a perfectly restored country inn, classy without being stuffy or snooty. A wine pairing was offered with the tasting menu, not being big wine people we declined, although the $40 price tag seemed like a pretty good value. The meal started with "snacks", an assortment of items including some broiled oysters, quail eggs, vegetables with a spread featuring caviar and one or two other items. These "snack" had a wide variety of tastes and textures to warm up the taste buds for the rest of the meal. Each of the dishes that followed were super flavorful and varied. Even the fresh bread was world class, a warm round mild sour dough that was super crispy on the outside and chewy inside. The turnip was excellent as were the mushrooms and it was hard to choose between the fish and venison as the star entree. Dessert was a multi faceted affair with a mouse a crunchy hazel nut cracker kind of thing and a shaved flavored ice as a garnish. As we sipped our espresso our second dessert plate arrived (I think I had lost count of the number of items at that point) featuring some small bites to finish off the night. The service throughout was excellent and the hostess (maybe manager?) offered us a brief history of the inn when my wife inquired. For us this was a bit of a splurge but I would say a similar meal in a major city would probably run you much more. I highly recommend and look forward to returning myself.

Yelp
We have been wanting to try this place out and finally got the chance. Pop up Chef Jay Kumar was amazing. We got the mushroom ragout appetizer, filet mignon and gooey chocolate cake. The chef also gave us complementary samosas. We cleaned our plate and walked out full. Hope to see this chef back here.

Yelp
I have had numerous dinners at Deer Mtn Inn in the past few years. There have been some changes with staff and management which caused me to frequent less. The atmosphere here is perfect whether sitting in one of he dining rooms or have a drink at the cozy bar near the large fireplace. I went recently and my experience puts it back on my top list for the area. Our bartender made some awesome drinks and was fun to hang with. Service was perfect... The glasses were always full, bread always warm and you never had to ask or wait for anything.... Rare these days. The food was very good. Overall a great dining experience. I would also highly recommend coming here after snowboarding for some apres and snacks! One request would to bring back some of the entrees that were previously on the menu like pistachio encrusted New Zealand rack of lamb, venison fillets, pork belly etc. Highly recommend this establishment !

Yelp
My husband and had a very last-minute getaway to the Deer Mountain Inn for 3 nights and we absolutely loved it. The inn itself is beautiful and exactly what I'd hoped it would be. Rustic but modern, like the country house of a wealthy, urban interior designer (who truly enjoys having guests and wants them to be comfortable). There's beautiful and quirky art on the walls, cozy rugs, and gorgeous mountain views. The grounds are stunning and impeccably maintained. So many gorgeous flowers. I would make a trip just to see the pure-white puffball hydrangeas. We stayed in the Reid room and it was large enough to be comfortable yet still felt cozy. The bed was ridiculously comfortable and we had to force ourselves out of it each morning. The bathroom, though small, was quite stylish and perfectly functional. Great water pressure, lovely smelling soaps, etc. We ate at the restaurant both Sunday and Monday nights and really enjoyed it both times. It's a small but creative menu and we liked that the chef uses produce from the inn's vegetable and herb garden. The cocktails were excellent and not too sweet (so good in fact, it was great to be able to flounce upstairs after dinner and not have to drive). Our servers also recommended two wines we loved, neither of which happened to be particularly expensive. Thank you, ladies! Speaking of which, the highlight of our stay was the service. The entire staff is super friendly, and not in an uptight, fake-smile kind of way (I'm absolutely awful at remembering names, which is the only reason I'm not mentioning them). The waitstaff really knew the menu and could talk in detail about the ingredients, where they came from, seasonality, etc. They were charming, funny and sweet. On the hotel side, one highlight for us was the Game of Thrones viewing party organized by Brian, the concierge, on Sunday night in the cozy attic lounge. It was totally unexpected but so much fun. We also played several games of (tipsy and terrible) pool before collapsing happily into our luxurious bed. All in all, it was just what we needed. A no-stress getaway with enough nature to feel woodsy, but enough amenities to feel pampered. We definitely plan on going back.

Yelp
Just had dinner here on Christmas Eve and they literally incorporated chestnuts roasting on an open fire, right in front of you into one of their dishes. We just escaped manhattan for the holidays and am COMPLETELY blown away with how amazing this place is. The food was amazing and the super affordable pricing was such a relief compared to dinner in the city AND it was a 7 course tasting menu. My lady mentioned she felt like royalty :) This place makes your feel like you are lucky to know it exists. Me an the lady feel it will be a lifetime of coming back.

Yelp
This restaurant is so hidden it took us a while to find it in the woods. The Inn itself was full of antiques, wooden furniture and a deer decorated chandelier. I was so far away from technology that I could not rely on Yelp for help in terms of looking up reviews. So, I had to rely on my instinct and ordered what I like without referring to the Yelp Bible. We were a group of 13 and we sat down at a big table by the window. It was comfy and so relaxing. However, I think we waited almost 5 minutes for our menu and another 5 for simply water and the bread. The bread basket was lukewarm and the bread honestly was not good. It was chewy and kind of hard. There is only Prix-fixe menu and the price is kind of high for the countryside. However, I guess the atmosphere made up for it. To start, I got their daily special salad, which is baby spinach with brie cheese, walnut, bacon and mushroom. The salad came un-tossed. The dressing was on top and I had to do the blending and tossing myself. It didn't really make sense. For entree, I went for the Cranberry duck with vegetables and wild rice pilaf. Most of my friends got their famous lamb chop and they made the right choice. My duck entree came with two huge duck legs and generous portion of vegetable and rice pilaf. I tasted the duck and it was very tender. However, the cranberry sauce was over-powering. The whole dish was so sweet. It was a strange flavor. Even my rice pilaf was soaked in the sweet sauce. I got to try my friends' lamb chop dish and it was great. They gave you tons of lamb chops and they were seasoned very well. The meat was juicy and tender. Finally, we ended with desserts of our choices. I got the chocolate layer cake. It was a big piece and definitely rich and delicious! Overall, the food is just OK. I don't think I will come back. The service was really slow but friendly. I think it is because they don't have a lot of wait staff or maybe they are just more slow-paced?!

Yelp
Cozy and stunningly gorgeous. The subtle smoky scent of whisky and pipe tobacco is suffused through the dark rooms. Antique rugs scattered over creaky floorboards. Sink into an old leather sofa by the fireplace and sip on a cleverly-named, heavenly mixed drink. Make it last, though - 'cause that drank be $16. We beat the crowd by arriving just at sunset, but that early, we didn't have the appetite for the $55 pre-fixe three-course dinner, so we just chose a few appetizers which sadly, came drenched in oil. I might've asked that the Brussels sprouts be not served in 8 ounces of bacon grease, but I overheard a server telling another table that the chef refuses to make any alterations whatsoever to the menu.

Yelp
After a day of skiing at Hunter Mountain nothing is more relaxing then coming for dinner at Deer Mountain Inn. Friends of mine were staying at a cottage and invited me over for dinner. The atmosphere is of your dreamiest coziest winter cottage experience you can think of. The food was absolutely fantastic I had the pasta modifies to be vegan with oyster mushrooms. It was absolutely exquisite. Looking forward to coming back and staying at the inn myself sometime soon.

Yelp
Just went here for dinner and it was incredible. My wife and I had the gazpacho, beat salad, shrimp, lamb, cake, and raspberry streusel. The place was absolutely beautiful and some great outdoor seating. But the highlight of the entire evening was my cocktail. I had the best Manhattan I've ever tasted. Our server smoked French vermouth for months in apples and chicken and had the liquor as a mix of rye and bourbon. If you come to this place to eat and/or drink, you HAVE to ask for Darrin to make you a martini. This guy needs to open his own bar, because I'll be there, wherever it is. We will certainly be back!

Yelp
I feel compelled to write a review for Deer Mountain Inn. Not because I want to be mean-spirited or am seeking some sort of atonement from the restaurant. I want to write this review because we has such an awful experience that I feel others need to know what to expect when dining here. A group of 15 of my closest friends came to Deer Mountain on March 16 to celebrate a friend's birthday. Because our party was so large, we had no choice but to dine from the 7-course tasting menu at $72 a person. The waitress also convinced all of us to do the wine pairing (we were told everyone had to participate or no one could?) at an additional $45 a person. Then the waitress asked if we wanted to add the scallops and rabbit onto the tasting menu. We said we would try it and without asking about quantity, she ordered us 8 scallop dishes and 2 rabbit. Sometime during this discussion, sparkling water was poured for everyone at the table without asking. Then we were told we were in for a 3-hour dinner as if that was bonus? Things got worse when the food and wine started coming out. I am not exaggerating when I say that both the food and wine was some of the worst yet most expensive we've ever had. The food was bland, flavorless and trying way too hard. The "snacks" consisted of a bland potato dipped in clay, poorly shucked oysters and some other forgettable things sitting in rocks? Next came those 8 scallop dishes we didn't order, and it was one of the worst things we've ever had. These were not scallops. This was uni foam sitting over a bunch of ice chips and maybe 1 full scallop chopped up spread across the 8 dishes. Next came the beet which was one of the better dishes, but it was a beet? Then rainbow trout...also flavorless. And next a dish of maybe 4 small mushrooms which were supposedly over foie gras but definitely were not. They were ok. Last was the venison which was also ok. And the dessert as described by one of our friends tasted like "medical flan". I wish we could say the wine was better but it wasn't. Several of the glasses were truly undrinkable. There were about two wines in total that everyone agreed were pleasant to drink. In reality the dinner did last 3-hours, but that was only because the courses were so poorly planned that we went long periods of time without the next course or wine pairing. After that 3-hour ordeal, imagine how surprised I was when we got a bill for $2,630. That works out to about $175 a person for a dinner where maybe 1.5 of the courses and 2 of the glasses of wine were enjoyable. We also noted on the bill that we were charged $9 a bottle for BOTH flat and sparking water, for a total of $126. That's $126 we were billed for WATER!! And those so-called "scallops" that were awful? The waitress had ordered us 8 of them, for a total of $144 for foam and ice chips. All in all, we're not a rowdy or mean-spirited group. But we do hail from three of the best foodie cities in the country- New York, Los Angles and Chicago- and we've had some great food. Maybe Deer Mountain can get away with this because of their location and lack of competition, but anyone who actually expects a fine dining experience when you're spending that kind of money should STEER CLEAR. We truly felt that the restaurant took advantage of us and will never be returning.

Yelp
We just had Christmas Eve dinner here, and it was so disappointing. I did the tasting menu and it was not good at all and so overpriced for no reason. I literally ate all the bread because I so hungry. I have to go eat another meal now because I'm hungry. I would skip this place and go to the restaurant at Scribners Lodge instead, it is significantly better!

Yelp
Have been coming to this restaurant for years. Finally had a chance to stay over at the newly renovated and incredibly charming inn. The restaurant was impeccable as always. Three amazing courses that are always delicious, well portioned and satisfying. Highlights were the grilled octopus appetizer and the flourless chocolate cake which had pistachios, ice cream, cherries and sea salt. Basically everything I could dream of. The cocktails were expertly created by the incredible (and friendly) bartender Darren. We enjoyed chatting with him and enjoying lavender gin gimlets by the fire in the cozy lounge before dinner (best cocktail I ever had). The Pinot noir with dinner was excellent. They have a great wine list. As for the inn, everything was perfect. Attention to detail was noted. Loved the all day coffee and tea bar with almond milk and the "healthy" sodas available. We didn't play but there is a cozy upstairs hangout for hotel guests with a pool table and DVDs. Looks like they will be starting a bar up there as well. Rooms were super cozy and bathroom renovated and luxurious. The breakfast was simple but delicious. The property is beautiful. You can hike straight from the grounds. Okay I think I have said enough! Go for dinner (and a pre dinner cocktail) and if you get to spend the weekend even better!

Yelp
If only it was all about decor! One if the most beautiful settings at a perfect country location .A historic mansion that s full of inviting spots ,crackling fireplaces. Hunting lodge at it s best.A step back in time ..But the menu far from reflects this sensibility. We dined there the week of Thanksgiving.one would expect fine country cooking.soup or a stew.:maybe game or a roast bird..a harvest meal celebrating this season.Instead the only hearty offering was a pork cutlet. No fish no fowl.we were confronted with a "tasting "menu.we eat out often in New York where this is the new cuisine.but why go to a country setting and find the same copy cat feeling.it s ok to feel full after eating.needless to say we left hungry.. What a shame and a waste of one of the most beautiful places in the mountains.

Yelp
It's 5 stars. I don't know how anyone could rate this place any less! It's easily our favorite spot in the Catskills for cocktails, dinner & brunch! Superb service & outstanding atmosphere- but I have to say that the cherry on top is the bartender, with his unique drinks menu! Darren is an artist with inventive & delicious drinks - he's spoiled us for any other bar up here! Lavender Gimlet is my personal favorite- but there's so many more. Brian, the manager, & Sidra are friendly & make each trip to the Inn special. The Inn is really our favorite!

Yelp
Spent a magical night in the Wheeler suite. The ambiance is cozy, rustic just beautiful. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the Inn and the surrounding area. We enjoyed a signature cocktail at the cozy bar followed by a delicious meal. We had the butterscotch pudding with honeycomb topping for dessert, it was delicious. We'll be back.

Yelp
GORGEOUS...MAGICAL...RELAXING....FUN....and that is just the words to use to describe the Inn... Add in the FRIENDLY, FUN, DOWN TO EARTH staff..and you have a perfect match for a place to get away and experience good food, drink, fresh air and nature! I was just at DMI for a weekend wedding and EVERYONE..and I MEAN EVERYONE from the Ernesto at the front desk to Brian who runs the place, to Emma the photographer, and food magician Chef Ryan....each and every person made you feel so welcomed. I had no idea where I was going for this amazing weekend but I have to tell you I returned home with a new found love for this part of the world...one that I never really experienced before! The grounds and gardens are lovely. The rooms are cute, cozy and super comfortable beds...not to mention the robes, towels, and other amenities in the room are top notch! The breakfast that is included was yummy too...fresh berries, home made granola, bagels, muffins....lox, home made cream cheese....it was delicious! (the KETO diet was put on hold this weekend!) The wedding I attended took place at the top of the mountain just above the Inn.. (short walk or quick car ride). The bride and groom were married with the backdrop of the mountains behind them. It was breathtaking. Then the magical reception was back on the grounds at DMI. I have been to many, many weddings in many places, but this one tops them...food/lighting/music...all of it... Rated 10+ in my book! I can't thank the staff enough for taking this amazing wedding weekend so memorable. I feel like I really do have new friends in the Catskills! If I had to pick one highlight...it is my stuffed friend (Melvin) who Brian was kind enough to let me take on the dance floor......if you go there..you can inquire about Melvin. THANK YOU AGAIN....I will be back someday!

Yelp
This place came highly recommended by the staff at our hotel. We were greeted by an inviting and warm room, with two large wood-buring fireplaces. The staff was friendly, accomadating from the minute we stepped through the door! We felt very relaxed and comfortable as we enjoyed our first drink of the evening on the couch in front of one of the fireplaces! The menu offered extensive options of American dishes with some interesting flavors. They offer a three course price fix menu ranging from $30-$44. I had the salmon glazed in a sweet sauce and my boyfriend had the surf n turf- our dishes were each prepared perfectly. The taste of the salmon was the perfect flavoring. We highly recommend the next time you are in Tannersville to make a reservation here!

Yelp
Great setting. Lovely interior, especially in the winter when there's a few fires raging. Food varies from "solid" to "very good", and the cocktails are fantastic. So why only two stars? The service. Three out of the five times I've gone the staff were friendly, helpful and totally on it UNTIL the drink orders arrived. Then they disappeared. All three times it was bad enough that I had to flag some random other staff member to find our server and take our dinner orders. One time this happened and the hostess apologized profusely and comped us a couple of glasses of wine, which at least told me they knew this was an issue, but even on an empty night I had to deal with the same disappearing act. Apart from making for an annoying evening out, they'd be selling more drinks if their waitstaff actually checked in on their tables. It's too bad. This is really the only thing wrong with the place - but it's bad enough to overshadow what the kitchen and the bartender bring to the place.

Yelp
I recently moved to the great state of New York so I'm still figuring out where to go to eat. I have ended up eating at the deer mountain inn an average of two times per week. The atmosphere is great, the service is great, and the food is amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant. The views from the restaurant are amazing as well.

Yelp
Really beautiful rooms. Fireplace going. This is a pet friendly restaurant. At least in the bar and lounge area. The fried chicken appetizer is amazing. Portion is large. It's pricey but you get what you pay for. The cheese platter could of been more robust. Really small for price charged. I can't comment on dinner. Its a tasting menu. Just not something I want at dinner. Suggest special occasions, high end dining. Give it a try.

Yelp
Last night we dined at Deer Mountain Inn and truly enjoyed the Chefs tasting Menu! WOW! My wife's line seems most fitting, "it was like eating our way through a brilliant and exciting museum!" JUST FANTASTIC!

Yelp
Best restaurant & bar in the Catskills! I have never had a bad drink, meal or service here & I highly recommend the DMI. Darren, the bartender, makes the most delicious & creative drinks & I honestly compare all other cocktails to his- none even come close! He is friendly, funny & truly a genius behind the bar. The manager Brian always greets us with a smile & the food is excellent, gourmet 5 star quality. The atmosphere is perfect & everyone is so friendly. I really can't capture the magic of this place in words- just try it. You won't regret it!

Yelp
What a quaint little inn. The staff was over the top helpful and friendly and willing to meet our needs. The room was clean and inviting. The views are outrageous. The many hiking trails are serene and they have little shelters to sit and enjoy the peacefulness, and you can even have a fire at night to keep warm. The grounds are superbly landscaped, and I enjoyed the yoga instruction with Tara on the front lawn. The food was excellent and the chef met our dietary needs to perfection. Would definitely stay here again. Beautiful getaway!
