19 Wineries and Tasting Rooms to Visit in Sonoma County - AFAR

"An independent, family-owned estate founded in 1975 that produces exclusively from its own vineyards and is known for estate pinot noirs and chardonnays as well as less-expected cabernet sauvignon and syrah. Tastings are intentionally small and intimate, with warm staff who welcome questions and provide a personable, educational experience." - Bailey Berg, Tim Chester, Jessie Beck

Google
Wonderful family winery, and producers of our favorite Pinot noir!! Newly renovated tasting room, and informative tours with explanation about the goldridge and altamont soil types influencing the wines. Their Fall member pick-up is not to be missed with a variety of pumpkins and squash from the family farm.

The best wine tour hands down we have ever experienced!

Our host Rebecca was wonderful! Very knowledgeable about the winery and the current vintages. Our group was treated to a special flight. A wonderful estate tasting experience!

This is the best tour in the area. It's small and intimate and they spend time explaining their crops and soils. They answer all your questions. Sit on the veranda and taste the most delicious wines I have ever had.

I have been a fan and loooog time allocation member for Dehlinger wines - over thirty years!. I even found ways to have our allocation delivered to us while we were expats. There is no one better in the Russian River Valley than Tom Dehlinger, his wife Carole, and their two daughters who are now playing a prominent roles in running the winery. I still remember one visit to the winery and Tom was bawling about having to drive through San Francisco to pick up Eva - who was @ Stanford....Eva is now the winemaker and Carmen - basically the "boss" - in a very elegant way - taking care of all winery's related businesses. I got to know Tom & Carole when I was @ university (when wine tasting in Napa & Sonoma was free!). I remember the time when I was wandering around Sonoma and met up with Tom when he just came back from working on the vineyard and he asked if I wanted to taste some wines from barrels... Three hours later, I rolled out of the winery... Also during that time, got to know Tom Rocchioli and his gang.... If you want to have some of the best wines on the planet and with Tom Dehlinger's ethos - great wines with a very fair price - get on their list... May take a bit of time but will be worth your while.

Do not miss an opportunity to visit this winery. Besides the fact the Dehlinger’s wines are absolutely exquisite, this family run winery has some of the most warm and welcoming staff you’re ever going to find anywhere.

Yelp
Delicious wine!! Our host Rebecca was beyond wonderful. 10 stars. She is so smart about the property and wines in general. I learned a lot. She is kind and not pretentious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Extraordinary wines and the best Pinot Noir that I have had anywhere. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful, especially Carmen. I am looking forward consuming my latest purchases and heading back up to the winery in November for my fall allotment.

Yelp
Tom Dehlinger is an ornery cuss, in a good way. He stays close to his roots, and shuns the "celebrity" aspects of wine-makers. His daughters have brought this place to a new level. Wonderful, wonderful wines!

Yelp
Extraordinary Wines. Well-run facility, lovely architecture of their home (?) The pourers at their event were pleasant. Bought a t-shirt, it was soft. Only good things to say about this. ====update==== For a recent celebration we enjoyed a 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve and it was perfect!

Yelp
This is the best winery tour you can take. It's very intimate and informative. They explain all about the soil and different kinds of wine. They will answer all your questions and then some. I loved it. The wine was so good. I could drink that every day.

Yelp
I'm a new Dehlinger fan. My friends and I were visiting the Sonoma wine country and were lucky enough to happen to be in the area for one of the two open houses per year. What a treat! Delicious wine, great people, tasty food, and all for free. In fact, they were even giving away bins of extra squash, pumpkins and gourds from their fall harvest. Of course you will want to buy all the wines though! I loved the laid back approach from a family who truly loves and knows their wine. All the wines are fabulous. Delicious Pinots and frankly all the wines we tasted were great and worth buying! I love getting my emails with new releases and am so glad we stumbled upon this gem!

Yelp
Been on the mailing list since the 70's. Still buying the wine. Buy others as well now because they have ALMOST risen to the same level of excellence. Latest Altamont Pinot Noir just blew me away.

Yelp
The bottle of wine that got me was a bottle of an '05 Dehlinger Estate Pinot Noir. I had a good basic knowledge of wine through safeway with most of their low and medium end wine to find my groove through my early development of Oenology . I never found a favorite, although I did like a few. But then a friend, a loyal customer or Dehlinger of a couple of decades, gifted me a bottle. I fell in love! Then I realized the difference of drinking "regular/accessible" wine, and the desire to taste, savor, and wait for developing complexity with just one bottle. I joined the waiting list immediately and I met Tom and and the core crew soon after. After I learned he was one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir in CA, low production, hard to find/get, cult status, and reasonably priced. Luckily, I was able to get on the list soon after with a low allocation but with crazy excitement! They used to seem always trying to keep a low profile and just make the best for their guests, but they just blew up the pinot craze recently on Wine Spectator. I'm sure the turn over of snail mail style to the technological world helped with Tom's eventual successors. Though with the world wide acknowledgement, and the crazy sought after status, a family member always answer the phone....don't be star struck if it is Tom!

Yelp
I love wineries that are off the beaten path, and Dehlinger fits the bill quite nicely. There is no gondola, no castle, no swimming pool and to my knowledge, no movies have been filmed here. So if you are looking for the wine country, Disneyland style, stay away. But really, it isn't very accessible which is what makes it so great - no tour busses or drunken bachelorette parties here. Certain months of the year it is open by appointment on Fridays, but other than that it has only two open houses a year. If you happen to make it to one, you're in for a treat. Their wines are wonderful - I have never not liked anything I've tasted, and you can tell the thought and care that went into them. They're known for their Pinot, but I've also been pleasantly surprised by some of the blends. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Dehlinger with some friends a few years ago. It has become one of our favorites and we try to make it to the open house whenever we can.
