If I'm being honest, I was pretty underwhelmed by our tasting at Del Dotto Historic Winery & Caves. We had a 3pm tour time on a Saturday in late March and for better or worse my two friends and I were in a group with a wine club member. There's nothing wrong with being a member of a wine club, I mean I think it's great(!), but when this former frat-boy told us over and over about how he's a member of the winery, it got old pretty fast. And, honestly, good job - you became a member because you purchased $2,500+ in wine, cool. Moving on...
Our host, Kyle, was decent although not nearly as good as some of the hosts we had at other wineries (Shane at Nickel & Nickel, Reed at Far Niente, etc.). He was able to tell us about the various barrels and we tried a decent selection of wines. We arrived to the 2017 Piazza Rose Bubbles and although sweet, pretty good. The 2016 Cave Blend was great. I didn't particularly care for the Dolores Red Port (dessert wine). The Cabs that we tried (2015 Vineyard 887 and 2015 Villa Del Lago) were decent but I found myself pouring out more wine at Del Dotto than at any of the other wineries we visited, combined.
Once we went through the cave, I thought the cheese/meat and pizzas were going to be the best part - don't get me wrong, the potential was there - but former frat-boy and co. definitely dominated the snack consumption. Maybe our experience would've been better if it was a private tour but for the money I already forked over, it just wasn't worth it. The experience had potential but I probably won't return... after all, meh, I've experienced better.
