Molly Lambert’s Grub Street Diet

"A fast‑food chain she intended to visit after the party (part of a playful argument she wanted to make about it being better than Taco Bell), but it was closed when she tried to go." - Chris Crowley

I came here for the first time for dinner on my way home after work and decided to check Del Taco out. It was OK. The outside and inside are welcoming, clean and well lit. This is the typical fast- food taco restaurant. It offers many food items and combo options and drinks, which is what I look for in a taco place like this. I went for a hard-shell beef taco and a cheeseburger (I was curious about trying one from a taco restaurant). The taco was good out the hamburger was OK. I mean, not the best I have had, but I would come back for more tacos. Staff was helpful and friendly. There is plenty of free parking. Again, I would come back for more tacos, and only tacos.

Google
The food is pretty good (other than the nachos - see pic), and it seems fresher than taco bell, and the prices are better than taco bell (especially if you use the app), but where they fall short is service. If you order in the app, they put your food in an outdoor locker and text you a code so you can grab it and go - love the idea! Except they don't always text you a code. Or the screen where you enter the code is broken. So then you have to go inside, where they will completely ignore you, because they don't take orders from customers in person - they have a touch-screen for people to place in-person orders - so if you stand there and wait for someone to help you, they will not. You have to get their attention, which feels rude since they're busy, but if you don't, you might not get your food for a while.

We drove 2 hours from Charlotte for lunch! There are only a few things we missed from California and this was one of them!!! Absolutely the best!!! The owner was super attentive and sweet, the staff was very pleasant and the food hands down the best! We brought a cooler to bring burritos home and freeze and the owner asked us if we needed ice.

Google
Good fast food, reasonably priced. I got a regular cheeseburger ( i recommend double next time) very good. Fries, perfect retro style crinkle cut, fresh and hot. Strawberry milkshake, also fresh tasting and not overly sweet. Came on a Monday evening on January 12, 2026. Great experience

Google
Since finding this little gem, we will eat out no where else. Amazing, fresh food. Affordable prices. Beyond helpful staff. The portions are so large that a regular sized meal actually fills you up without the guilt of fast food dining. The app gets you great deals too!

Google
Oh my how I have missed Del Taco. The food is fabulous still. I love that we have one out here. The place is clean, the owner is very friendly and the staff is great. Food is fresh and portions are decent. I will be going here a lot.

Google
Del Taco is fairly new to Durham. I waited to visit so after the hype reduced some. There was no wait to go through the drive thru and the lady taking orders was patient and very knowledgeable about the menu items. Additionally, the menu pricing is pretty reasonable and not inflated like their competitor across the street haha. You can reasonably feed your family and get the appropriate portions for your buck! We ordered a combo as well as a $7 box to try and get a feel of different items. The chicken tacos were our favorite as they were juicy and packed with flavor! However, the beef and bean burrito ratio was off to me. The refried beans were too overpowering inside and I could barely taste any beef. I personally added sour cream when I got home in which it elevated the flavor since I couldn't really taste the beef. I would try them again, but during the day instead of dinner.

Google
First time ever at a del taco, why is there not more of these places around? Way better than Taco Bell larger selection even some that sound strange, (French fries with tacos?) but where else can you fill up for under $5 and get decent food too. The dining room was clean as well with a sanitary score of 95.5 which means the guy just did not want to give a perfect score. I will be back.

Yelp
I am a native Cali Girl and transplanted to NC about 4 years ago. The only thing I missed from Home was Del Taco. I'm over the moon in love with this location. Their food is fresh, tastes just like I remember and the employees are all very nice. I will be a Del Taco fan forever. No Taco Bell for me. Recommendations: Chicken Quesadilla Grilled Chicken Soft Tacos Del Beef Burrito The Del Taco Cheeseburgers French fries Well... everything on their menu! Enjoy!

Yelp
Yes, I'm from California and have been waiting for Del Taco to open. If you think my nostalgia will sway my review, you're correct. The first bite of my chicken burrito brought me right back to the 1990's and my Clairemont Drive home location. I also had to get a bean burrito (for science) and it was piping hot! So delicious with some mild sauce. Del Tacos mild sauce has a real black peppery flavor to it that just hits different than the bell. And sadly this was the best tortilla I've had in a while (that was not from a sit down Mexican restaurant). The location can be difficult to get in and out of, especially if it's busy (Don't try to park toward the back left of the building - you'll get stuck and have to back out). Those working the drive thru were kind and patient. My husband ordered nacho fries and she said we don't have that. It's fries with queso on it - a West Coast Del Taco staple! She was able to accommodate and life can go on. The outside of the building is cute, minimalist compared to how remember it looking, but it's nice. I agree with other early reviewers that breakfast service would be a nice addition. Come check it out. If you don't like it, more for us West Coast transplants.

Yelp
To the point positive and negative review: + Open till 3am + Friendly and helpful staff + Good enough seating in lobby + Food about on the level of Moe's (above Taco Bell) - They have no breakfast? (major misstep being on the edge of RTP with people coming into work) - The traffic pattern around the restaurant is terrible (Don't come in from the gas station or try to drive around the building unless in the drive thru) -Overhyped because transplants from the west are excited about a taste of home. (Nothing wrong with this! Still overhyped though) -They have a burger on the menu. If you're going to a place called Del Taco and ordering a burger with Cookout being right across the street please stop what you are doing and read a few more of my reviews. Overall if I was in the area I would stop here but it's not worth making a special trip for unless you've grown up around it. If they open up breakfast it may be a different story we'll see! 4 Stars rating based on fast food restaurants only.

Yelp
The menu is so big that I just got a few different tacos and a beef and bean burrito to test it out. The quality and size of all the items is very good. I'm stuffed. Tacos always suffer a little on a 15 minute drive home, so next time I'll eat there. Inside was clean, and had enough tables to seat quite a few, although a lot of construction workers were eating in their trucks. I used the app, and was checked in and there within 5 min. The app sends you a code, and you just enter code and locker will open with your order. Don't forget the sauce.

Yelp
This is a great quick place to stop for lunch. I like how you can order from kiosks. The kitchen is open so I feel like everything is really clean. I tried the original taco and a fish taco- both were tasty but I definitely want to go back for more fish tacos! I'd probably skip the fries next time, because they weren't stand-out to me. The employee who brought us our food was very nice and pointed out the hot sauces so we wouldn't forget. I'd definitely go again!

Yelp
First day and opened promptly at 9 AM. Tons of employees and corporate present. For the most part things went smoothly. It's not big inside but things are laid out so that there's more seating than I expected. I was first to receive my food, even tho third in line. Just got a simple order of a snack taco and drink. The hard shell taco was fresh and stayed together without cracking into pieces unlike the other place. The filling was good and cheese and lettuce was ample. No tomatoes on the snack taco, but for $1.25 it was fine. I was disappointed to learn they won't be serving breakfast at this location, although a corporate person said that might change if there's a demand for it, so you all know what to do!! So welcome back to Durham, Del Taco. Breakfast burritos would definitely be a welcome addition and so would bringing back the salsa bar!!

Yelp
So glad a del taco cane to the area! I've always enjoyed their food. The basics like rice, beans, and meat have always seemed like better quality at del taco than the other taco place with a bell. My favorite are their fries, especially chili cheese or carne asada, fish tacos, any of their cali burritos, and the basics bean and cheese burritos with green sauce. The inside is fresh and new with bright colors and helpful staff. They don't seem to have all the promo items but hopefully with time they'll participate in them. One bummer is they don't serve breakfast hopefully they'll add that as well.

Yelp
Finally has opened! Wasn't busy at all and was able to get in the drive thru rather quickly. Came to find out breakfast isn't being served here which is strange. The design of this building is super modern and eye catching. The food itself seemed just like you'd get it out west. I'm sure they still have some kinks to work out but overall they are doing great!

Yelp
Keeping it honest, I'm excited that this spot is in Durham, North Carolina. Just tried them for the first time and the food is good. The quantity is wild. Or maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. I was excited when I saw value menu where they had à la cart tacos price at $1.30. I ordered one and when I got that taco, it was so small, it was literally perfect for a kid. I also ordered a fish taco, which was no more than three bites. I ordered these donut holes that were actually pretty tasty. However they were extremely greasy. I also ordered the snack size queso and chips and that was a joke. there was 11 chips in the bag and a small ramekin of queso. My first time at this taco spot and I was excited because of them first breaking into this area, but my goodness, the portions are pretty small or maybe I just ordered the wrong things. Great taste though

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick lunch with my wife and was pleasantly surprised. You can order from the counter or at a kiosk. The kiosk is almost overwhelming with customizing options. Given that the store is still pretty new it was very clean and operating at a very quick pace. I ordered the two chicken taco combo with fries and an extra Carne asada taco. The two chicken tacos were amazing. You can choose to add fries into the tacos or burritos there which is a bit Del Taco staple. Their hot sauce is very good and much like Taco Bell comes in a variety of heat levels. The carne asada taco tasted better than it looked, but the chicken at del Taco seems really like the way to go. The food came up quick and our order was correct. My wife got a fish taco and a regular hardshell ground beef taco. She agreed that the soft-shell tacos were much better, and she really loved the fish taco and wish she had gotten two of that one. Most fast food experiences are pretty subpar lately but the price was decent and the service was very quick. I'd easily return here for a quick meal again.

Yelp
This is an outstanding place to eat. The tacos and quesadillas are great. Honestly where can you get a taco with fresh grated cheese these days!

Yelp
Nice new location. The food and service are both excellent. I like the ground beef taco, beef & cheese burrito, and nachos. The donut holes are tasty for dessert.

Yelp
I'm from the west coast, where Del Taco started (and past experience plays a big role in wanting to see this new store succeed, ngl). All the options & add-ons available for items on the "standard" menu, means you can get whatever your belly's hankering... am hoping that the staff - who seem to be doing their best, bless their hearts! - can get the bugs out of the operation (missed order items, mobile order pick-up procedure & exterior "locker" scheme, etc.) that I've run into in my first couple visits.

J C.

Yelp
Excellent classic beef tacos. Loaded with meat. Still figuring out the hot sauces! Love these Del Tacos. Fresh lettuce, good proportions of everything and lots of cheese! No skimpy tacos here! Fast service. 2 fat tacos for $4.49.

Yelp
First, the Del Taco website doesn't know this store exists on August 4. Second, the parking lot is so crowded because they had at least 20 employees. Fine, some were trainees observing. I ordered the street taco. Bad choice. It was tiny, oil soaked and soggy. There was no ice in the drink machine. You've got 20 people here, can someone take care of the drink machine? This location is doomed. It didn't work for KFC, Sisters Kitchen, a great Caribbean place, and a terrible Sushi/Thai place. The traffic flow from the street is one way in and one way out. If the food and service was better, I would feel bad about it. Surrounded by Chik Fil A, McDonalds, Wendy's, Popeyes, Bojangles, Cookout and some good local options, they are the next failed restaurant at this location. Nice building. Too crowded.

Yelp
I'm here at least twice a week. Twice now I've gone late at night ordered fish tacos and gotten home - no likes. Key to a fish tacos. Emailed customer service and they sent me 2 $5 vouchers. Went to use them. They didn't work, and manager Nicole Williams was extremely rude to me that I didn't want to just pay for my food that I had vouchers for. She accused me of being rude for not just rolling over and being ok with it. I guess now if women dont just smile and say thank you, we are being rude. Her entire attitude was crap and she basically started out acting like I was the problem / I have these vouchers because your employees can't put the ingredients that are supposed to be included in the bag.

Yelp
The food was good. I ordered the steak tacos with fries. I don't like corn tortillas so that kind of ruined it for me, but I know to ask for a hard taco next time. I also ordered the del taco cheeseburger with fries for my daughter and she loved it. My oldest daughter got the chicken quesadilla and said it was really good. We also ordered the churros and nachos with queso. I wish I knew the beans were in it because I would've asked for that to be taken out. All in all, the food was good. The service was great. I didn't go inside, so drive thru it was and it didn't take long at all. I will definitely go back to this place soon.

Yelp
Moved from San Diego so was super excited to try again. Not sure if this location but food was definitely different. Ordered grilled chicken tacos which are cubed and even picture in menu shows them cut up. Then we were given some weird mushed meat like cat food. Place was packed so didn't wanna give it back but that's not how it is

Yelp
GRAND OPENING I was there Monday, July 7, 2025. The opening date was pushed back time-and-time again. Poor communication of new open dates became ridiculous, e.g. "opening fall 2024" became "early 2025" to "April," then "May," and on June 2, still said open "May" then finally "June" and "July." The Del Taco telephone customer service line, professional sounding folks, had no idea.... after 15 minutes, "check the website." THE FACILITY Nice new, sunny, clean indoors but MAJOR property design problems: 1. Narrow, hazardous traffic lane to drive-thru 2. Insufficient parking spots 3. Conflict between backing up from parking and those funneling into the drive-thru lanes (or coming from them) 4. Traffic turning in from Hwy 55 has almost no safe place to wait in line due to poor traffic design 5. Only two register/kiosks (not enough at rush hour) 6. Only one "regular cash register" (unmarked, almost hidden) From an investment/efficiency standpoint....TERRIBLE. Lost LOTS of money in MONTHS of delays, lack of notice to public. Facility not built for the traffic flow footprint; worth a lawsuit settlement. THE FOOD I've only eaten at any Del Taco a few times; it is clearly better than Taco Bell. The food quality is better, and the food is noticeably fresh! bean burrito with extra "green" sauce- For about $2.50, heavy and delicious, the beans, tortilla and green chile. "The Del Taco"- about the size of two regular tacos- very good; EXCELLENT with added cheese, almost 1/2 a meal, one taco. grilled chicken taco (soft)- great taste milkshakes- GREAT taste. I hear they have a mini shake size which would be perfect size for a snack hamburgers- better than a McDonalds cheeseburger, but not by much VALUE FOR MONEY You need to know your way around their menu: I'm still learning. They have specials in-app and the national chain advertises great specials like 2 for 1 tacos, etc. but don't seem to be at this store. E.g. they advertise $5, $7 and $9 boxes that are tremendous deals, but not at this location. No breakfast (yet) at this location. We found that a full combo, e.g. 2 Del Tacos, french fries and drink ($9) with an added bean burrito with extra green chile sauce and a grilled chicken taco totaled $15- enough for two people, and you are full! Ordering a la carte and customizing seems the cheaper way to go. More like $12 for two people, and a lot of food. SERVICE/ TECHNOLOGY Way too many employees for an efficient operation- like 20 black- shirted employees- a ridiculous number. Milling around. I received the wrong order. Apparently no mustard, employee kept saying "honey mustard." However, one smartly dressed lady helped me at the kiosk, helped me very much, caused me to smile. VERY DIFFICULT TO LEARN; getting reward points and applying them to free food items. They disappear. CONCLUSION The challenge will be keeping the facility clean and organized; and a professional bearing of employees. Food is very good and somewhat of a niche here in the Triangle. Beware the drive through and turning into and exiting the property- it will raise your blood pressure 10 points. You want to celebrate when you get through the gauntlet experience and actually get your food! IS IT WORTH IT? YES! It's an adventure, actually, learning their menu, fighting their technology and inefficiency. You need 30 minutes training to navigate the chaos only to find good food, reasonably priced, with LOTS of hidden menu items, specials. I like this place!

John P.

Yelp
Food was okay, but we could of had as good or better at our local Taco Bell. The service was okay and we got what we ordered. The restaurant was clean as fast food joints go. Did have a pesky gnat at the table.
google avatar

Candi C.

Yelp
Service was great. Food was hot. But 2 street tacos, regular fries and a drink was nearly $14! Definitely not worth the money. Sadly, quantity/ quality of what's given for that amount of money is the issue. You can't even order other tacos outside of the crispy chicken one, a la carte. No recommendation because of this... but glad to see u guys in town!

Cidini O.

Yelp
Food portions have decreased drastically! One employee asked the manager shouldn't EMS get the first responder discount too? As the manager turned away, from 911 Emergency Medical Services, and told the employee no, that doesn't apply to them. For a company to advertise and honor first responders 4 days before the grand opening to a feel meal, to shunning away emergency medical service personnel on duty is absurd.
