"Why book? For tranquility materialized—Importance of Being Earnest countryside realness. Set the scene Close enough to the Long Island Sound that you’ll feel that sea breeze-freshness in the air—Southport Harbor and the Pequot Yacht Club lie just a 15-minute stroll away—Delamar Southport is a country estate of 43 rooms with neat little grounds, a fabulous restaurant, and doting staff. It’s like Downton Abbey by way of New England. The backstory The second Delamar in Connecticut, the hotel opened in 2009 just under 21 miles east of the Greenwich Harbor location. As with the original, owner Charles Mallory has decked the walls in paintings from his personal collection. The rooms Every room here is different—most rooms have four-poster beds and wallpaper in one rich choice or another. The Pequot Suite is a 2,200-square-foot, two-bedroom spread with a full kitchen and a Waterworks air tub in the master. It’s really more of an apartment—much bigger and better appointed than my own back in Brooklyn. It’s vast, with warm neutrals and crisp whites reminiscent of the master bedrooms in some of my richer friends’ homes growing up. Food and drink Mallory and executive chef Frederic Keiffer put their heads together to dream up the first Artisan Restaurant—subsequent iterations have popped up in West Hartford (just as successful) and Traverse City, Michigan (writer has yet to visit). A recurring motif that originated here is the mural, big and green and purple flora brightening an otherwise earthy dining room. Beverage manager Christopher Cantanesi takes fabulous care of me with his recommendations—champagne with seafood chowder (preserved lemon is the MVP here), cioppino in lobster broth with pinot freaking noir. I rolled out happy. The spa is so nearly completed and ready to open at the time of my visit that I'm tempted to just stick around and wait. This is the first Delamar with a sauna, whilst facials and massages on offer mirror those at the other properties: Biologique Recherche products, winning service, and so on. The neighborhood/area Aside from that aforementioned stroll to the shore, guests at the Delamar Southport are among other things in close proximity to Connecticut’s premiere chocolatier. Atelier BE Chocolat sells their chocolates onsite at a counter in Greenwich property’s lobby, but guests of the Southport property are more conveniently positioned to enjoy the chocolate making process of Belgian chocolate master Benoit Racquet. Racquet teaches me how to write my name in dark chocolate on a milk chocolate bar, and then leads me to his back room for a tasting with a wine pairing—this sounds more elicit than it is, we share the space with all of his back of house workers. The service Kind and attentive, but also blink-and-you-miss-it—if all you want is a fleeting “hello!” shouted from the hotel desk, that’s all you get. When I locked myself out of my bathroom, my maintenance man and I bond over his prior career as a photographer for Vogue. Anything left to mention? Like at the Delamar West Hartford, there are a host of chauffeured car experiences on offer here. I particularly enjoy my picnic, a two-hour excursion in a Bentley Continental Flying Spur wherein we took the scenic route along the Connecticut shore to the grounds of Delamar sister property the Inn at Longshore. Sets me up with my outsized wicker picnic basket (contained within are a bottle of red, a hearty and fibrous kale salad, salmon, and cheesecake for dessert) atop a flannel blanket, I read and ate while gazing out at the water." - Charlie Hobbs

"Just 90 minutes north of New York City, the Delamar is a perfect weekend escape with on-site spa (using Biologique Recherche products) and destination restaurant, Artisan, under French chef Frederic Kieffer. Check-in begins with a glass of sherry or port, and rooms contain an attractive mix of traditional New England furnishings and colorful modern art. Added bonus: Given that the hotel is an easy, seven-minute walk from the nearest Metro North rail station, there's no need for a car to gallery-hop or to explore Southport's historic downtown." - CNT Editors

Nice hotel. A little Pricey. Staff was awesome. Great food. Great breakfast. The breakfast staff were great. The only minor blip was the Limited domestic beer selections in the bar. all they had was coors light.

Nice layout, great breakfast, good location off the highway. Staff is very friendly. Rooms are comfortable. Exceptional wine list. Bartender is a wise guy....and not in a good way. Many different areas for private functions. Will return again if in the area.

We just got married at the Delamar Southport and I can't say enough good things about our experience. The room was luxurious and the hotel grounds were beautiful - they saw to every last detail of our event - all our guests said how incredible the service was. The day after our wedding, we went down for the free breakfast and was so impressed with the quality!

We spent our 52nd anniversary at the Delmar. The room was large and comfortable. The bar and restaurant were warm a welcoming. The food was very good and the staff was attentive, professional and welcoming. I would highly recommend staying here and plan to recommend it to my friends

Staff at all levels made us feel welcomed and at home. Our dog loved it as much as we did. Homemade yogurt at breakfast is not to be missed. Rooms are very comfortable.

Beautiful hotel with very friendly and service-oriented staff. We loved our room, it was pretty and comfortable. We found the location perfect for Fairfield University events. Parking was easy. We will definitely return to Delamar Southport.

I have stayed at other Delamar properties, and this one fell short. For starters, if you book a “standard“ room there’s not a coffee maker in your room. (?!) I was not informed of this and found it extremely inconvenient. Is this a cost cutting measure? I have not stayed in a hotel room without a coffee maker, well maybe ever. When I asked the front desk upon checkout about this, they said they would have brought coffee to my room, but of course no one told me this when I checked in. The bed linens are nice, but the mattresses are firm. The TV is not a smart TV. Decor is less modern than other Delamar properties and could be updated. The location is right next to I 95. While the noise is minimal, the lack of amenities within walking distance of the hotel was disappointing. My meal at Artisan was quite good and the service very attentive there. I asked for a late check out of noon on my checkout day as I had a Spa appointment at the hotel at 12:30 and was firmly told 11:30 was the best they could do. Overall, the experience fell short.

Amazing Hotel with outstanding service. We have been staying at the Delamare when we visit family in Connecticut for over ten years. Each visit has been first class. In March we were there with my husband for a family emergency and it was like staying at home. Maria the manager welcomed us as always with her gracious smile and the entire staff made sure we had everything we needed. I must mention Ariana who showed us such compassion and went above and beyond to assist us during a very difficult time. The rooms are beautiful, comfortable and clean. And as I said the service is beyond expectations. Would not stay anywhere else in Connecticut!

Yelp
Stayed here while in town for a wedding and it was great. The staff was friendly and accommodating, the hotel room was large and clean. We will definitely stay here again if we're in town.

Yelp
Everyone is friendly. The room was very comfortable and clean. The restaurant was really good,

Yelp
Whenever I am in the area, this is the hotel chain I put at the top of my list. Even closer to the city is the one in Greenwich, which I plan to try. But, for leaf-peeping, the Southport Delamar is an excellent choice. It is not on the beaten path, but near enough to Westport's shopping district and beach to make it a good place to anchor while attending a nearby event or business meeting. The building is a beautiful old inn with two stories. Every room is unique and there are suites that are downright regal. The spaces are large and while not luxurious, are elegantly appointed with European-style traditional furniture. I needed a rollaway bed added to my room and they managed to do it without disturbing the comfort and elegance of the space. The bathrooms are European in style and size. All the rooms have a verdant view, even at the back of the hotel, since the setting is filled with trees and lawns. Parking is a bit of a challenge (especially since we had a very large vehicle) and we had to walk to it through rain (it was summer -- I imagine the same walk to be a bit much when it is snowing -- how beautiful that area must be in winter). The rooms all have refrigerators. In fact, the only negative I experienced during my four-day stay was the cleaning staff discarded a sandwich I had brought with me from Breads, in the City. I was miffed! Fresh linens and towels daily were optional. There is a dining room for meals on the first floor -- quite good. The staff were all friendly. There is a little spa and store on that level too that looked calm and soothing. The whole place was spotless. When we arrived, we found brand new terry slippers and bathrobes waiting for us, and two bottles of spring water. There wasn't a coffee maker in the room, but room service managed to deliver it quickly first thing each morning. Breakfast was ready in the dining room as well. There were a few minor drawbacks. There is no pool (as far as I could see), there is not much to walk to, so a car is a must, and it is pricey. I still plan to stay there again, when in the area.

Yelp
We stayed here New Year's Eve with our family. We had a fantastic stay here. It was a holiday weekend and extremely busy in the hotel and restaurant . The hotel staff went above and beyond to make sure they secured me a room available for New Year's Eve. The room was cozy and I was met with a welcome letter and bottle of champagne. The breakfast buffet was tasty and staff was friendly and helpful. This is a great place for a family to stay and especially the holiday season. Thank you Delamar Southport for an amazing stay! Natasha

Yelp
Don't spend one cent in this hotel. Upon checking into our room we realized that the room temperature was 74 degrees and climbing. The staff told us it was a "hotel-wide" problem, as if this would somehow be helpful to us. By the end of the night, the temperature had INCREASED to 77 degrees, despite the fact that the temperature OUTSIDE is in the low 60's. I don't even know how that's possible. The windows have signs that say "do not open" and even if we did, the roadway of I-95 is approximately 100 feet away so that would hardly be a viable solution. Don't walk, RUN to another hotel before you stay here. Edit: after giving up and driving home (we were only 1.5 hour away for a wedding) the hotel called and offered to cancel our reservation with a refund and a gift certificate for a future stay.

Yelp
When you pull up to the hotel you're grated by a doorman/bellhop but the entrance area has zero feel that you're at the front of a hotel. They don't have parking spaces available to leave your car few a few minutes to check in, you kinda just double park. Then the size of the hotel is at least 100 rooms from just walking around yet the lobby seems smaller than some 6 room bnbs we've been to. It's nice they have a fire place but there is only seating for one. And then a cross is a very uncomfortable couch for seating for another 2 and that's it. The room was large and clean and fairly priced, would love to see the lobby updated but other than that very happy with the hotel.

Yelp
This is the best location if you are en route off I 95 and want a luxury experience with great room [very very spacious] and lovely restaurant and patio area. We will book again --- Great stopping point for trips to Maine or southward to Philly... Their set up for dogs is wonderful Valet parking is inside & safe

Yelp
Post Mother's Day visit. We had fabulous massages then ate lunch in the courtyard. The hotel is super clean, the staff super attentive! The atmosphere Spring flowers everywhere. You do need to make a reservation to eat at the restaurant ask or outside with an umbrella.... We had clams on the half shell and seafood salads. Totally fabulous day!

Heidi R.

Yelp
We have stayed at this hotel frequently over the years. Mickey greets us with a big smile and warm welcome every time we visit. He always offers to assist us with bags. He also extends the greeting with a glass of Prosecco and bottled waters. Always look forward to seeing him.

Philip H.

Yelp
This is the worst experience I have ever had. Booked a three bedroom suite to show up to a 1 bedroom. Front desk was not trained and frankly rude. Pull out couch is suppose to be acceptable for grandparents on move in weekend to Fairfield ... Really? This hotel in Greenwich is amazing .. this hotel in Southport is equal to a red food inn! Shame on you for treating people this way ... we have the emails to prove you lied! Forget to mention when we asked to cancel all future reservations we were informed that we can't. This is truly the worst hotel experience we have ever had

Celso G.

Yelp
Loved the hotel We had a great room in the second floor The food at the restaurant is excellent, however no breakfast in bed. You have to gOnto the restaurant and it closes at 10 am The staff very friendly, we had our small dog and they treated her as if she was royalty Good service and they have a car service to shopping

Yelp
My boyfriends parents stay here everything they visit his sister at Fairfield University, and this past parents weekend we decided to join them! I also came a separate time with my boyfriend - parents weekend was 5 stars, other weekend 4. It's a small hotel (only 40 rooms) with complimentary parking below the building, and it is a residential building as well. It's close to town and the Fairfield campus so it's a great location for visiting! The main floor houses a beautiful entryway and the main dining room with a bar. It's definitely a warm, quaint atmosphere and reminds me most of the small boutique hotels in Aspen or some ski town. It's so cute and cozy! They serve an upscale breakfast buffet every morning with mini bagels, pastries, eggs, potatoes, bacon, fruit, yogurt & granola, and a coffee bar with to-go cups if you're on your way out. We also had some bar snacks later on that we're delicious! Fried Pickles, French fries, and chicken and foie gras meatballs - all great for sharing! And some mimosas of course. As for the rooms, the first time we stayed in a 1 bedroom suite on the 2nd floor that had two bathrooms, a fully stocked kitchen, living area with a couch and chair, and a large bedroom and closet. It was like a beautiful spacious apartment, perfect for the weekend! The second weekend our room was a two bed, regular room. Everything was beautiful, great bed and GREAT pillows (this is what I need from a hotel). The bathroom was so pretty and it felt very home-y, you feel very settled in these rooms and they're unlike any other hotel I've stayed at. My only complaint is that our room this time was one that can connect to another next door for a family and, well, regardless of the connecting door being closed we could hear every bit of intimate conversation going on next door. No one was yelling, just regular talking voices. It was an unfortunate finding or I'd definitely be giving 5 stars, but it made sleeping difficult! You can also hear a lot of hallway noise. Overall we loved it and I know the bfs parents do too, they already have plans to come back multiple times before their daughter graduates. I highly recommend this spot! (Just ask for a room that doesn't connect )

Jan S.

Yelp
DELAMAR is s nice hotel but in no way worth the price charged. My room faced i95 and was noisy all night. An extra $15.00 service charge was assessed. For what???? It was a nice room but nothing special.

Angela E.

Yelp
What a gorgeous hotel! The staff are amazing - they are all so friendly and accommodating. We stayed on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the water. The bed was super comfy and they provided plenty of pillows. I also love that they supply a bedside charging station! The wine & cheese happy hour was a welcome surprise as was the continental breakfast. My only my regret is not booking a longer stay!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I complained to management they are in desperate need of a changing table in their bathroom. I would've have had a better experience changing my child in my car but it's snowing outside. Management made it very clear they have no intention of purchasing a changing table now or ever. The lack of respect was truly disappointing. Completely disheartening as a Mother trying to take care of her kids while attending a 1st birthday party.

Kristen L.

Yelp
Stayed here for one night during a work trip and I have to say that it is an absolutely beautiful hotel and the staff is friendly (albeit a little "cold" and they do not go out of their way to be helpful). After the working dinner, I came back to the hotel and ended up opening one of the bottles of wine in the mini fridge of my room to relax. The next morning as I was checking out I asked if I could put that charge on my personal charge -- they ended up charging me double without my knowledge or consent (one charge for the wine, one for "tip") and I only received an invoice for the actual charge. Did not realize that I was charged $100 tip until it was too late and the charge showed up on my credit card. Very angry and slightly disappointed in how the staff handled this.

Yelp
We were told this was best place to stay in then Fairfield CT area so we were ok spending $250+ A night for our room. The first three nights were fine ..., friendly, helpful staff, large clean room and quiet environment. The fourth night, unfortunately marred what would have been an OK experience. The space below our room was rented for a private party. The noise level,at first, was what one would or perhaps should expect, up at certain level, on a Friday night: music, loud voices, whooping and increasing sound levels. We get that. It happens, we know how it can be. However the noise level got to a point that it became impossible to sleep so at approx. 11:15 PM we called the front desk. This is where our experience at the the delamar became a nightmare. The one person on duty was at best indifferent to our pleas, at worst rude, arrogant and condescending. He indicated he would do nothing to tone down the noise. In fact the noise levels rose after our call. So we called again and spoke to a different person who said he had just come on duty and yes was aware of our earlier call but said there wasn't anything he could or would do about the noise. We requested to speak to the manager on duty and we're told by this gentlemen that he was indeed the Manager. Now our conversation with a supposed "hospitality" professional degenerated to the point where we felt our only recourse was to call in help from the local police and report the disturbance. Instead, to give the parties making the excess noise a chance to quiet down, my husband went downstairs wished them well but asked nicely that they please tone it down so other guests could sleep. It was now midnight. Probably wasn't a great idea but we were on our own. The response was higher sound levels, name calling and ridicule. Without belaboring this anymore the bottom line for us is an abhorrence for the poor customer service skills we witnessed, the total lack of respect we received after spending about $1500 at the hotel over 4 days (and at the attached Artisan Restaurant )and frankly the sadness we feel about the way we were treated. We were in CT on vacation. We were in a good mood and are realistic and tolerant people. Yet this place managed to rapidly turn a good time bad. A place like this should do so much better. The DeLaMar did not live up to it's reputation because of rude, surly, sullen, arrogant and uncaring front desk staff. We will not be back. We do not recommend the DeLaMar. Their are better choices in the area.

Pete R.

Yelp
Delamar Southport, is a hotel that is tremendously over stated. The common thread at this so called upscale hotel is bad attitude, and unresponsiveness. For example, when a party went on for hours into the early morning hours next door, and we complained about the noise level, come 1AM and then again at 2AM, the manager on duty stated that there is nothing that he would or could do. Amenities? There are no amenities at this hotel. No Spa, no nothing. It is basically a huge building warehousing partygoers and weekend getaway patrons. Now let me switch gears to the BAR/Restaurant. The Bartender,'s name is Carl or Karl. By far the WORST bartender our small party had ever been served by. Condescending, slow to take order, slow to bring the food, discourteous at times, a true BUZZ kill. This bartender was tending Bar at the other Delamar Hotel in Greenwich, about 10-years ago, when our party observed him treat another couple at the bar like dirt and proceeded to get into an altercation with these poor patrons. So, I guess he is up in Southport at the Artisan pulling the same crap. Upon asking an employee of the restaurant, once we were seated for dinner, why this restaurant tolerates this Bartender's conduct, the employee told us, "Carl/Karl is in BED with the owner of the restaurant and has been for years." He lamented, "We get Carl/Karl complaints all of the time." Adding; "Nothing happens when patrons complain, they keep this guy on staff and we all know why." The topper was, according to the restaurant Waiter; "The locals hate him because he makes them feel unwelcome." He ruins our tip base here, which impacts our income. Do not fo to this hotel or restaurant.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for one night. And we had an amazing experience. Such friendly staff, great food, and amazing service. The room was clean and well designed. We will definitely come back.

Yuwei Y.

Yelp
Came here for one night for a wedding and I have to say it is the worst experience a person can ever endure. My room was not ready for 2 hours after I explicitly requested for early checkin. The wedding ceremony starts at 3 pm and I was told my room will not be ready for me to check into untill 2:30 pm. The manager offered no apology or any glimpse of understand that they messed up. They did not offer any alternative as to where I could get ready. The worst part is this hotel host parties till late into the night. And when I came back from the wedding reception at 11 pm there was a rager happening right outside our room and I could feel my walls vibrating for hours. This hotel deserves no star from all my travels as a consultant and I honestly have no words to describe how horrible the service has been compared to the hundreds of hotels I've stayed at while traveling for work. Please take your money and go somewhere else. If I could give this establishment negative stars I would but at this point no stars seems more than appropriate. This place offers zero respect zero customer service and zero accountability. If you want to pay a premium just to get treated like crap then this would be the perfect establishment for you.

Simon M.

Yelp
When I checked in I was told the restaurant was closed for a private function. So no food. I then called room service and apparently no room service due to private function. Moral of story do not book room until you have asked if there is a private function. Paid going rate for a hotel room without services offered on their website. Be warned.

Scott P.

Yelp
I arrived on a quiet Thursday night. I'm 4 nights into here my 6 nights stay. They are very nice but anticipate nothing!! After my first 4 nights they still don't know my name and for a small boutique hotel I'm surprised. The breakfast buffet is lovely but getting boring. Maybe if the F&B director was paying attention they might have reached out to see if I cared for eggs cooked to order. I'm stuck with another order of pre-cooked scrambled eggs. I'm currently sitting at the bar for lunch as they change my room category (my request). They never offered to leave me in my suite until my next room was ready. Instead I was offered a cardboard box to keep my things in. Not literally, but I am at the bar with a cardboard box loaded with office supplies. Other guests must be thinking the office manager was fired and drinking his last iced tea before catching an early bus. Unfortunately, boutique hotel options in Bridgeport are slim and none. The Delamar is playing the part of slim. I'll be booking AirBnB for my next trip to Bridgeport.

Laura C.

Yelp
Room was beautiful with a fireplace in it and kitchenette. The bathroom door had problems shutting, but the staff came up promptly to fix it. Plumbing issue in the bathroom, but it too was handling swiftly. This is the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. We arrived early and they were able to accommodate us with a room earlier than we expected. Once the two small challenges were handled, our stay was very comfortable. The restaurant on premises was outstanding, as was the wait staff. When we didn't know what we wanted off the menu, the staff made suggestions and they were perfect. Wine list was also very good.

J w.

Yelp
There's good and bad. Good - the rooms are comfortable and large. The fireplace sometimes worked. The restaurant serves delicious food. The staff is nice but not well trained. Bad - if you are looking for a spa getaway this is not it. There is no spa. There's a room and if you want a spa service, the staff at the hotel will call in a masseuse or a facialist for your service. So they need plenty of time in advance and it's not like you can have a "girl's weekend" and four massages and facials running simultaneously or anything like that. At 9am I booked a facial for my boyfriend and a massage for me for 6pm services. At 10:30 I got a call that they couldn't get a facialist but they would try to get another masseuse if he wanted to have a massage instead. I asked about Sunday brunch and the concierge did not know the price, the times or the style (buffet vs ala carte). While standing in front of his desk computer he suggested I google it. He also never recommended we make a reservation and when we arrived for brunch there were no tables available in the dining room for us.

Grenville E.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed here several times on our way to and from Watch Hill where the new Ocean House is supposed to be the creme de la creme of hotels. Though much smaller the Delamar is superior in every way. The rooms are large and exquisitely decorated. The bar scene is friendly and fun. The cuisine in the hotel's Artisan restaurant is sublime. The service is timely and attentive. It must be the best restaurant in Fairfield County. This is a place to fall in love with.

Oliver C.

Yelp
Didn't start off great as we had to cancel our first night because of Super Storm Jonas, which the guy on the phone, Steve, said we wouldn't be charged for. However, when we arrived he changed his story and said he had told me he had to talk to me his manager about. However, the manager stepped in and took care of it. The staff at the desk and restaurant are a little young and they have some growing to do, but I would come back. The rooms are nice and the food in the restaurant is very good

Jean K.

Yelp
Stayed here on a romantic weekend away and it was great! The room was so royal and plush. We had a couples massage which was excellent and then had dinner at the Grey Goose down the street. The bar at the hotel was also excellent and has such a warm and artisanal feel.

Peter S.

Yelp
I've stayed at this property on numerous occasions while traveling either before or after summer vacation in Massachusetts. I always rent two rooms for my family and enjoy the food at their restaurant. This last visit will most likely be my last as we were placed in two first floor rooms next to the extremely loud outside bar. At check-in I immediately asked for room changes but was told that was the best they had. One room was next to the public ladies room where there was a constant congregation of chatty ladies who added more decibels to the outrageous constant sub-woofer pounding through the walls of our rooms. When I inquired about another duvet for our room I was told they only had one per room. When I inquired if they had ear plugs to block out the noise from their bar I was told, "Sorry no". The front desk was clearly unable to cure any issues and I would urge other travelers to consider other options prior to paying above market rates for this inadequate property.
