A Guide to Delft, the Dutch City of Blue Ceramics | Condé Nast Traveler

"Finishing a short city tour at this windmill on Phoenixstraat brings you to the last surviving mill in Delft, rebuilt in 1679 on earlier remains, where you can still see grain being ground and browse a shop selling grain, flour, and baking-related items that tempt anyone wanting to take a home-baking hobby up a notch." - Condé Nast Traveler

Kudos to the volunteers working at the mill! The windmill is fully operational—unlike many others around the country—and you can watch grain being ground into flour in real time. Informative descriptions explain the grinding process. The mill is in excellent condition and produces real flour, which you can purchase at the shop on the ground floor.

Fantastic experience in this windmill, no admission fee, run by extremely patient and knowledgeable volunteers. The volunteers would walk you through the mill's history and how it works. This working mill has a cafe downstairs with tasty, fresh pastries. The staff is polite and very professional.

What a great experience for both adults and kids this mill is! You can observe the operation of the XVII c. mill from the inside, the access is free, the staff is super friendly and well informed, the panoramic views of the city from the deck are great, and the pastries in the cafe downstairs are second to none.

⭐ Molen De Roos – Living history in motion A beautiful, hands-on piece of Dutch history! 🇳🇱🌾 Visiting Molen De Roos was more than just seeing a windmill – it was about feeling how it works, hearing the creaks of wood, and even getting the chance to grind real barley by hand. That experience alone made the visit unforgettable. The way the windmill operates is truly impressive – a clever, elegant system of gears, sails, and natural energy still functioning just as it did centuries ago. What touched me most was learning about the mill’s role during wartime – not just as a food supply tool but also as a silent symbol of resilience and survival for the community. Highly recommended for anyone who loves history, mechanics, or simply wants to connect with the soul of the Netherlands. 🌬️⚙️

Such a cool windmill. The admission is free but afterwards you can buy speciality flours made in the windmill to take home with you! 😍

Windmill De Roos is without a doubt one of the most iconic and picturesque landmarks in Delft. As the last remaining windmill within the old city walls, it holds a special place in the town’s heritage. Dating back to the 18th century, this beautiful mill once played a vital role in grain production and has since been lovingly preserved and revitalized as a vibrant local hub. Following the recent and thoughtfully executed renovation of the surrounding area, a project that took several years—the windmill now stands prouder than ever. The transformation is stunning. The moment you exit the new underground parking garage, you’re greeted by the striking silhouette of De Roos against Delft’s historic skyline. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop and soak it in. Truly postcard-worthy. Inside the mill, visitors can explore its workings and purchase a charming variety of products made right on site, from artisanal flours and local honey to fresh breads, pastries, and unique souvenirs. Adjacent to the mill is a cozy café where you can enjoy a good coffee, a refreshing drink, or a light meal like toasts or a simple breakfast. The indoor seating area is quaint and intimate perfect for couples or solo visitors, though not ideal for large families or big groups. The staff, both in the café and the shop, are incredibly welcoming and helpful, adding to the warm, down-to-earth atmosphere of the place. Whether you’re a local or a traveler passing through, Windmill De Roos offers a peaceful and enriching experience that blends history, local craftsmanship, and Dutch charm. Don’t miss it if you’re visiting Delft!
